'Red Stead' was one of the names that Akeld Steads has been known as over the years. The following extract comes from a piece of research the Northumberland National Park undertook on the village of Akeld. It comes from a section about the village in the 19th century.
"Only one substantial farm was situated outside the village during this period, Akeld Steads, on the north side of the Glen. This farmstead was known by a number of different names over time. It is labelled 'Red Stead' on the tithe map [dated 1840] and the earlier estate map, but figures as 'Akeld Lodge' on Greenwood's map (1828) and as 'Broom House' on Fryer's map (1820) and earlier still, on Armstrong's map (1769)."
More information about the Village Atlas project run by the Northumberland National Park can be found at http://www.northumberland-national-park.org.uk/VisitorGuide/... . I have also attached our full record for Akeld Steads Farmhouse, although we have very limited information about it.
