This may be a complete wild goose chase, but on the 1851 census, there is a John Knox, who is a Corporal in the Army, :-

John Knox born abt 1828 Barsny, Lanarkshire (Glasgow), Scotland Corporal residing St Marylebone, Middlesex
Then, on Scotland's People. born in 1821, BARNSY above, could really be Barony, below:-
25/03/1821 Knox JOHN JAMES KNOX/MARGARET COLVIN FR2026 CHILD 4 U Barony Glasgow CITY/LANARK 622/ 0080 0046
1851 census.
