Hi Ell
Thank you for your reply to my query. George was a private, and wondering how I might obtain his records. He died at the Union Workhouse in Maidstone. in 1885 subdistrict of Marden. I am not familiar with the reference RG9/274 that you cited. Do not have a clue what that would mean. Also, the George Oxley that you found born in 1795 and who was also a private in the army (?) and who died in the Royal Chelsea Hospital, can you tell me where this is located? Also, he was declared on the 1851 census as a "parish Pauper" Is this why he died in the old soldiers home?
Thank you for all this added information that I did not have.
Added thought: The original George who died in the Maidstone Workhouse and who was a private in the Tower of London, had a wife Elizabeth in 1881 when he was there. He claims to be single and she claims to be married in the census, Wondering if this was a rule of the military, that they could not claim dependents while serving?
Appreciate this.
Marilyn
