Looking for the origins (place of birth and mother's name) of my step-great-great-grandfather, JOHN LAWLEY.
It is possible that he was one of five young porters (in the 1851 Census) living at 4 Butler St., Whitechapel and born at Spitalfields in about 1831 although the age of "my" John Lawley was given as 39 (i.e., born in about 1828) when he died at the Mile End Workhouse on 26 Oct., 1867 (but death certificates are notoriously inaccurate in respect of age).
John Lawley's wife, Mary Née Bagshaw gave birth to their daughter Sarah Ann Lawley in 1861 at 1 Steward Street (now sometimes called Bishop's Square), Artillery Ground, London, near Spitalfields Markets (although I can't find John Lawley in the 1861 Census; was he in an institution or on board a ship?).
When John Lawley married Mary Bagshaw on 14 Jan., 1855 at the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul at Milton-next-Gravesend, Kent, both John and his father, William Lawley were shown on the certificate as brass founders. Both John and Mary's were then living at Milton and their ages were given as "full".
Mary Lawley was born in 1824 in Northfleet, Kent; she died on 12 Jan., 1874 at 97 Christian St., St. George in the East, London (In the 1871 Census she was at 45 Mulberry St., Mile End Old Town, London).
But where was John Lawley born?
Who was his mother?
Where was he in 1861?
Thank you for any help you may be able to provide.
