See http://www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk/data/bmd/memorials.... for information as to where to look for memorial inscriptions in Hertfordshire.

However most will not cover 20th century burials in town cemeteries - and you should contact the relevant town council as they will have records - if you provide the name and date of death (as described on the death certificate. The death certificate may well provide sufficient information to find an announcement of the death (and perhaps even an obituary or even more if there had to be an inquest) in the appropriate local newspaper.

Are there MI booklets for Hertfordshire &, if so, does anyone do lookups? I am searching for WILLIAM THOMAS SPOUSE, 72 years, who's death was registered 3/4 of 1947 in Biggleswade. The family lived at Greenfield, St. Johns Road in Hemel Hempstead in 1924 however I understand there was a large hospital in Biggleswade so he may have died in hospital. Many thanks - Joan
David
Me again
I found a Levi Taylor in the 1841 census, his wife Sarah and the son Joseph you mentioned. Sarah had died before the 1851 census as Levi shows up as Widowed
I found a maariage though the dates are a bit out to say the least but a Levi Taylor married Sarah Wilkinson in Abbots Langley on Feb 13th 1804
Lottee

Hi Kathryn

pleased to have helped. my own family are just as confusing & its nice to have a break from them now & then.

It took me a couple of years to find my own grandparents marriage- was convinced they never married... found out this year that they married a year before my nan died. our rellies certainly know how to shock us.

also dont forget - back in 1925 they didnt need to produce a birth cert for marriages, coould she have been known by another name back then? I say this as my grandad always went by his real name in later life, but his army papers are all in his middle name & a couple of early census records too. I find a lot of name changes with my family!! drives me nuts!!

Good luck
Gill

Hi Lotte

Thanks again, I now have traced the Wrenn family back to 1760. Would you be able to check John Hart & his wife in the 1851 Census as to age & place of birth as there is a marriage in Braughing in 1835 on the IGI, which would fit with the birth of their first chile Joseph in Ware in 1836 which is close to Braughing

The Cambs FHS Baptismal Index shows the baptism of a Hannah Brand in Ely in 1807, but there is nothing in IGI for the birth of a John Hart between 1810/1814.

Many Thanks

David
David
Sorry this is coming through piecemeal but doing other things at the same time.

This could well be the correct Elizabeth because the mother's surname was Wrenn and it was quite common for the mothers maiden name to be used as a middle name.

Details 1861 census

Mary Ann Trott - Widow - b 1816 - St Andrews, Hertfor - Laundress
Mary - daughter - unmarried - b 1840 - Benego, Herts - Laundress
Elizabeth - daughter - unmarried - b 1846 - Laundress
Eliz - daughter - unmarried - b 1848 - scholar
George - son - unmarried - b 1853 = scholar
Elizabeth Wrenn - Mother - widow - b 1789 - Bennington, Hertford - 72 yrs

Address Russell Street Benego

1841 census shows that the husband maybe Henry Trott - blacksmith living at Russell Street. There was a Henry Trott who died in 1853 in Hertford 3a 155 which would explain him missing in 1861

Hi, does anyone have access to the 1901 and 1911 Census please that could look up this lady for me and let me know anything you can about her ie her parents and if she had sisters or brothers.

I am also looking for a possible marriage for her. I know she was with my Grandfather in or around 1939 until he died in 1969 and then she died in 1979 in Streatham, London. I know she was in London in 1940 as a child was born to her in Battersea, London. Lee was her maiden name but on her death certificate she is given as Bryant which was my Grandfather's surname. He was George Richard Bryant. It may well be they never married but on her death cert it states "maiden surname of woman who has married" Lee.

This one is a bit of a mystery but am hoping something can be found. I do not have money to purchase credits therefore am asking for some help please. I only check to see if anyone has replied to my messages every now and again as I am at work during the day.

Kind Regards

Kathryn
Hi Gill

Thank you so much for your help. This now gives me something to go on. I too found that marriage on Free BMD but do not think it is the people I'm searching. I will endeavour to try and trace William Lee (the son) and see if he married and had children. I do love mysteries.

Once again Gill, many thanks for your help it is much appreciated.

Kind Regards

Kathryn Bryant

Hi Peter

I saw your email re the Weedon family tree from Rickmasworth i am a direct decendent of one of the Weedon Lines in Rickmansworth i can follow my 6x Great Grandmother and her daughters to Rickmansworth. I also have a seperate Weedon tree of 103 Weedons from Rickmansworth but as of yet am unable to connect my own tree with it. Although i am prity certain i belong on it somewhere due to the common names in the trees.

I also have records of the Weedons in the main tree living next door to my own relatives which again would suggest a connection.

I would be very interested in exchanging trees to see if there is anything we could learn from the exchanged research.

My main Weedon tree goes back to around 1648 altough 1648-1748 needs a little extra research to confirm details are correct.

my email address is sweedon@schemes-uk.com

Regards
Symon Weedon

I have followed the people who are more directly linked to my tree, and they ended up in St Albans.
I really have no idea if they would have any connection to the Day's who lived in Crabtree Lane in later years.
Re: Jesse GRAY - St Ippollits Herts

Hello Michelle. I believe there may be a chance that we are related as Jesse your grandfather & Alfred Gray my greatgrandfather are brothers. Sorry to be vague but have only recently been tracing my Fathers side. Here is the information that i know & will explain why we may be related. My Father is Anthony Gray b 28/9/1939, my grandfather is Alfred Valentine Gray b 1912 d 25/12/1943 he married Edna May Barker b 2/3/1916. My greatgrandfather is Alfred Gray b abt 1877(sorry i don't have a definite date yet) in Ippollitts = Maud Edwards. According to 1891 cencus there are 2 Alfred Grays b abt 1877 living in Ippollitts!!!
One says that Alfreds father is William Gray = Ann Hemmings obviously no relation. However, the second one says that Alfreds Father is Jesse Gray b22/4/1852 christened on 24/10/1852 he married Eliza Turner christened on 25/5/1851 in Ippollitts and that brothers & sisters include:- Sarah Aged 1, William aged 5, JESSE (yourgrandfather) aged 7, Another William aged 11,Alfred (my greatgrandfather) aged 14, Frederick aged 16 & George aged 17. Therefore your grandfather & potentially my greatgrandfather were brothers!!! I have also managed to find out that they were living at Number 12 Ashbrook in St Ippollitts and that Eliza parents George Turner and wife also Eliza Turner lived next door at Number 10 Ashbrook!!! So far the only other information that I have found out is that the brother George was christened on 13/7/1873 and that he married a Annie Laura Earle.

Really hope to hear from you, maybe you can confirm any of this information or possibly have some additional information.

Regards Jeremy Gray

Dear Jennifer,
Are you Jennifer Forsythe who lives in Cumbria? If so we have a mutual contact, a Patricia Dominicci in America, who mentioned a Sprigings family reunion in May 1999. I made contact with her earlier this year, when I started to research my Mother's family line. My husband and I have done much research over the years of his line and my cousin has traced my Father's line back to the early 1600s.
My Sprigings relative was my great grandmother Eliza Sprigings, daughter of George F Sprigings and Elizabeth Logan. Eliza had two brothers William and Edward and a sister Charlotte who did not marry. William and Edward went to Canada, according to Patricia and I have been hoping to get in touch with gerry Sprigings who is a descendent of Edward, but unfortunately both he and his wife have become very ill of late.

My line Eliza m. William Tidd and they had a daughter Martha who married my Grandfather george Allen. They lived all their lives in Wheathampstead and had a number of children, all males exept my Mother who was very much the youngest of the family: Mary Elizabeth Allen, known as Molly. She married my Father, Gordon george Defriez and I am one of two children, Elizabeth ann ( Liz) and my brother Richard George. We lived in the Harpenden, St.Albans areas, bringing up children, until retirement has brought us to the Essex/Suffolk borders 5 years ago.

I have tried to bring down, as well as go back the family lines and I have got back to a possible Richard and Susan Brewer who married in 1714 at St.Stephens. She was a widow and I think they had a son Richard who married a Susan Folks, but I cannot find his birth in the parish registers. Going back further I am not at all sure and was interested to hear of your research; would enjoy hearing the family lines back please as well as forward! Which line do you originate from? There seems to be so many as I think George Fredwerick and two of his three wives produced many offspring. I have tried to bring these lines down, but seem to have come to many stumbling blocks, mainly due to lack of evidence I suspect, using Ancestry.
Patricia did not think there were any more St.Albans Sprigings family members in England, so I am delighted to hear of a distant relation living in the UK?

Hope to hear more from you Jennifer.
Best wishes,

Liz Reed
johnreed10@yahoo.com

I have a lot of Sprigings data from Hertfordshire going back to a marriage in 1697 of John s. & Penelope Wilson at St. Albans (my forebears). For about 150 years they stayed in Herts, then they spread out towards Portsmouth and up the middle of the country, via Worcs. Staffs, Wales to Cheshire, Lancs & the Yorkshire Dales.
Which branches are you researching?
Best wishes,
Jennifer

your message is years old, but I have just seen it. I have a Sprigings tree going back to the 1600s in Herts. My grandfather Percy was the brother of your William George and he died in Percy's house. My great grandfather was the Thomas you refer to, his father was George, chr. Jan 1809 in Codicote, Herts. Let me know if you want more.
Jennifer, nee Sprigings

I'm intrigued by this post as I am researching a King family from Ware. I have an Amy M Watson Born Ware who married a Percy King there in 1943. Amy was the daughter of James William Watson born India 1887 who married Maude Sarah Youseman in Ware in 1910. The Youseman family came from Kent, I beleive around Strood.

I would be interested in communicating with anyone who has this unusual name in their tree. My ancestor was a Maude Youseman who married James William Watson in Ware, Herts in 1910.Their children were Kathleen b1912,Bernard J 1913, Robert 1914,Isabel 1915, Amy 1917, Sidney 1919, Leonard 1921 & Freda 1925 & possibly Malcolm 1931 all children born Ware.

Hi

I found Edith Lee born Dec quarter 1899, Ware, Herts on free BMD.
1901 census-
head- William Lee, age 33, occupation (fancy writing & I think it says Lawyer), born in Ware, Herts.
wife- Edith Lee, age 31, born Petworth Sussex.
Kate Peacock, daughter, age 7, born Guilford Surrey.
William Lee, son, age 3, born Ware Herts
Nellie Lee, daughter, age 3, born ware Herts
Edith Lee, daughter, age 1, born Ware Herts
adress- 5 The Bourme, Ware, Herts

reading this I am assuming Kate is from a previous marriage, perhaps Edith (mother) was widowed young? this is the only Lee family in Ware with an Edith age 1, so probably this is them.

I dont have a subscription to the 1911 census- sorry. I use pay as you go, only when I really have to.

I found a marriage on the England & Wales marriage index between a George RF Bryant & Dorothy E Lee in April quarter 1925 in Lewisham, Kent vol 1d. page 1970. in fact this was the only Bryant/Lee marriage I could find

the child born in 1940- I found a Zillah G Bryant born July quarter 1940, Battersea, mothers maiden name Lee, volume 1d in the England & Wales birth index.

hope any of this helps

Gill

In 1926 George H Day was living at Durden Dene, Crabtree Lane, Harpenden, and was in Crabtree Lane (no house name given) in 1912 - according to the Kelly's Directory for Hertfordshire. This suggests you should be able to find George in the 1911 Census, and if you look at the censuses on Ancestry you will find many people called Day being born and living in Harpenden for most of the relevant period. This suggests that a normal search of the censuses, FreeBMD, etc., could establish a link.

I noted in 1901 George Day (58, Brickyard Foreman, born Harpenden) who was on West Common, Harpenden, Near Hatchen Green Farm. He is the right age to be the brother (or cousin) of the William Day mentioned before in this thread (and see under "Day" on www,hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk). I suspect that this George Day may have worked for William Atherton Smith (a farmer who also made bricks, and my great great uncle) and if you track down the family relationships from the census, etc., I might be able to find out a bit more about him.

Can you help make the Genealogy in Hertfordshire Web Site even better?

Following a "rest" over the summer the site is now back to normal. In October I have posted in excess of 70 new pages or update, and over 25 new pictures, to the popular web site at www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk

Changes include features covering Football in Hertfordshire, Past news of Hemel Hempstead, and interesting articles in the magazine "Herts Past and Present." I have also restarted the "Rogues Gallery" where, if you are lucky, you may find pictures of your ancestor. Further updates, including more features, are planned between now and Christmas - which is the time when many of you take advantage of the long holiday break and dark evenings to catch up with your family history research.

If you have found the site useful there is now an opportunity for you to make this web site even better. There are a number of ways you can help and these are detailed on the site. For instance, if you know of a book describing the history of a Hertfordshire town or village which is not mentioned on the site you are invited to send me details and a brief summary (perhaps including a mention of how it helped you own researches) to add to the appropriate place page.
