Looking for information on a William and Sarah Day who were living in Portland Street in St Albans, around the 1890 to 1900's. Trying to find out if they lived there any earlier, and if so, what their childrens names were. Any information would be great. Thanks....

Thanks so much for that information, Bernard. It has added a few more names of children who weren't on the 1991 census as I guess they had moved on by then ? Still not 100% sure I'm onto the right Day family, as we are waiting on my Grandmother's birth certificate to confirm her mother's name. It's looking pretty good though. I appreciate your help. Cheers.......

William and Sarah Day are listed with their children in Portland Street, St Michales, St Albans, in the 1881 census - as another correspondent has told you. William is also listed in the 1851 census with his parents William and Sophia - and his widowed mother Sophia turns out to be living a few doors away from him in 1881.

I have posted full details (including links to web pages on the relevant sources, and to the places mentioned) on the web site "Genealogy in Hertfordshire" at www.hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk as it is difficult to post tables and links on this site.

Hi,
My Day line originated in Harpenden in the early 1800's, but that is as far as I have gone . I have followed the people who are more directly linked to my tree, and they ended up in St Albans.
I really have no idea if they would have any connection to the Day's who lived in Crabtree Lane in later years. Sorry.

In 1926 George H Day was living at Durden Dene, Crabtree Lane, Harpenden, and was in Crabtree Lane (no house name given) in 1912 - according to the Kelly's Directory for Hertfordshire. This suggests you should be able to find George in the 1911 Census, and if you look at the censuses on Ancestry you will find many people called Day being born and living in Harpenden for most of the relevant period. This suggests that a normal search of the censuses, FreeBMD, etc., could establish a link.

I noted in 1901 George Day (58, Brickyard Foreman, born Harpenden) who was on West Common, Harpenden, Near Hatchen Green Farm. He is the right age to be the brother (or cousin) of the William Day mentioned before in this thread (and see under "Day" on www,hertfordshire-genealogy.co.uk). I suspect that this George Day may have worked for William Atherton Smith (a farmer who also made bricks, and my great great uncle) and if you track down the family relationships from the census, etc., I might be able to find out a bit more about him.
