Hi Christine

Thanks I think.
Benjamin Miller married a few times by the looks of this.
To a Jane Halls, Marianne ? and to Mary Ann Thurgood.
As for the children there was ( by the looks of it)
sarah
jeffery
alfred
elizabeth
susannah
lousia halls - step daughter
john not sure who he is????

I think he married Mary Ann Thurgood first.( 1816 )
second to Jane Halls ( 1858 )
third to Marianne ( sometime in the 1861's )
I think they - benjamin and mary only had the 5 children.
Would you be able to find out their dates of birth etc...???
or even if they married or not???????

Kind Regards
Karen Kelly, in South Australia.

I think Mary Ann and Marianne are the same people - run the names Mary Ann together.

From the IGI (extracted parish records) father Benjamin, mother Marianne

BENJAMIN MILLER - Christening: 12 APR 1824 Water Lane-Independent, Bishops Stortford (Born 6 March 1824)

JOHN THOMAS MILLER - Christening: 19 APR 1822 Water Lane-Independent, Bishops Stortford (born 25 feb 1822)

MARIANE MILLER - Christening: 14 AUG 1818 Water Lane-Independent, Bishops Stortford (born 19 July 1818)

SUSANNAH MILLER - Christening: 01 NOV 1827 Water Lane-Independent, Bishops Stortford (born 11 aug 1827) (mother Mary Ann)

ELIZABETH MILLER -Christening: 04 DEC 1829 Water Lane-Independent, Bishops Stortford (born 3 sep 1829)

ALFRED MILLER -Christening: 16 JAN 1832 Water Lane-Independent, Bishops Stortford (born 19 Dec 1831)

This is a submitted entry, so really needs verification

SARAH THURGOOD MILLER Christening:9 SEP 1836 Independent Church, Bishops Stortford, Hertford (Born 7 Jul 1836

Father: Benjamin MILLER
Mother: Mary Ann THURGOOD

So is this one

Jeffrey THURGOOD MILLER, Christening: 7 Mar 1834, Independent Church, Bishops Stortford, Hertford (born 24 Dec 1833)

Hope this helps

Hello Christine

Yeah it sounds likes it all fits in together.
sounds like they named a son and daugther after themselves.
ie: benjamin and mariane..

I would like to know when and who came to Australia and why???

So the john in 1841 census is their son ( benjamin and mary ann)?
would it be susan or susannah?? are they the same person???

( why would people spell the names differently. That just confuse people).

Does it say anywhere that Jeffery Thurgood Miller married Julia Dowling??

Does it say anywhere who the kids married and their children??

Sorry about all the questions but this is really good information and it definitely goes into my family tree.

Thank you so much.
Karen Kelly,
South Australia.

Mary J, 18, daughter, born Landport (?)Hampshire

Benjamin Miller married Tamar Ann Bellingham jan-mar 1850, Portsea registration district vol vol 7 p 186

1861 - looks like Benjamin is with his parents in law, although his wife and children are not, in Fareham, Hampshire
William Belllingham, born c1792 Bathsfield (?), Surrey
Amelia Bellingham, born c1796, Limpsfield (?), Surrey
Benjamin Miller, born c1826, born Bishops Stortford

(Children are both boarding in schools in 1861)

Back again!

There is a marriage for a Marian Miller, Bishops Stortford in 1843 to a William Taylor (on LDS site) - can't find them on the 1851. but there is a death registration for Marian Taylor, Bishops Stortford, oct-dec 1853

Guess what - looking for Susan(nah) on the 1851 - found her with her sister Marian Taylor - only her husband is Walter!
So 1851, 25 High Road, Westminster St Margaret

Walter Taylor, 30, baker, born Rivershall, Essex
Marian Taylor, 30, born Bishops Stortford
Emma Taylor, 5, daughter, born Knightsbridge, Middlesex
Eliza Taylor, 2, ditto
George Taylor, 3, son, ditto (age might be 3months)
Susan Miller, 23, sister, born Bishops Stortford
plus another visitor and 4 servants.

The 1871 has a Susan Barker, born c1828, Bishops Stortford, wife of John Barker, born c1807, Ixworth,Suffolk - a surgeon and GP, living in Stewkley, Buckinghamshire. (He is a widower on the 1861.) There is a marriage registration jan-mar 1870, City of London district for John Barker and Susannah Miller.

Possible death registration for John Barker in Bishops Stortford oct-dec 1871 and for Susan Barker, same district, jul-sep 1886

Elizabeth - there is a death registration for an Elizabeth Miller, Bishop's Stortford district, jul-sep 1850. I can't see her on 1851, so this could be 'yours'

Alfred Miller is a draper's assistant in 1871, lodging in St Mary's Newington, London, unmarried. Can't see him after 1871.

Sarah (1836) is with her parents in 1851. She married Joseph Livings at Hockerill, (which is part of Bishops Stortford) on 29 Apr 1855 (from IGI extracted parish entry)
1861 - they are in West Ham, Essex
Joseph Livings, 26, coal labourer, born Bishops Stortford (as are all family)
Sarah, 25, wife
Amelia, 5, daughter
Robert, 4, son
Josiah, 2, son

1871 - still in West Ham, Amelia not with them.
Nancy, 10, daughter, born Plaistow, Essex
Obadiah, 2, son, ditto
Adelaide, 6months, daughter, ditto

1881 - still West Ham. Family includes both Joseph and Sarah, Josiah (21, transcribed as John), Obadiah (12), Adelaide (10) and Sarah Ann (daughter, 4)

Sarah Livings death registration apr-jun 1908, Bishops Stortford district.

Can't see Joseph or Sarah between 1881-1901

Jeffrey Miller (1834) is with his parents in 1851. Can't see him after that date. When/where do you think they married?

If you would like further details of the grandchildren of Benjamin and Marianne, let me know.

Christine
