Davis in Fairford

Hello,

I am researching my mother's side of the family, and she is a Davis. I've traced her line through Hampshire, India during the Mutiny, London, and finally to their farm in Fairford, Gloucestershire. John Davis born c1832 had the parents Joseph Davis and Elizabeth Taylor. I have found many birth records on the IGI for John's younger siblings, but nothing for John and his eldest sister, Charlotte, born c1834.

I cannot find a birth record that seems to match for Joseph Davis, John's father either. He was born c1812 in Fairford as well according to census records.

Is anyone familiar with this area? I know it is near Cirencester, and Bisley. Was it likely that Joseph and his two eldest children were 'born in Fairford' but Baptised in Cirencester (which has no records on the IGI unfortunately), or Bisley?

Thanks,

Mike

Mary Hill was born c. 1818, in Bristol. She was sentenced in 1835 in the Bristol Quarter Sessions for receiving stolen goods and was sentenced to seven years transportation to Australia. Later, in Australia, she married twice, the first time to Thomas Bishop and the second to my ancestor George Tickell. I am looking for any information on the family she left behind in England, in particular the name of her parents. Thanks in advance.

The family also are in London, Falklands, South America and Asia.
Anyone with any information on pre and post J W Ricketts would be greatfully received particularly if you are related.

Abraham Evans

Hello

Would anybody be prepared to do a lookup for me when they're next at the Gloucestershire Record Office?

My ancestor Abraham Evans was baptised in Chedworth on 30th June 1833, the son of a William Evans and a Sophia (surname unknown). By the time he married in 1852 (in Shipton-under-Wychwood, Oxfordshire), he was a chair bottomer, but became a tinker after his marriage. He seemed to travel around a lot - one of his children being born in Hampshire - before settling in Buckinghamshire.

What I'm looking for is a record of William and Sophia's marriage. I have no idea whether it took place in Chedworth or even Gloucestershire, but I have to make assumptions in order to test assumptions. I think they may have had another son, Joseph, as a Joseph Evans appears on Abraham's marriage certificate, along with a Mary (I don't know whether she is Joseph's wife or sister)

I hope these scraps of information are enough to make a start. If anyone can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it, as I have been stuck with this brick wall for some time now.

Thanks

Best Regards

Martin Harvey

Henry Ricketts, born about 1816

I am struggling to find any further information here: I am descended from a Henry Ricketts, born abt 1816 in Gloucestershire (town/parish unknown). He lived in France for a while, having two children born there in 1846 and 1848, and died probably not long after the 1851 census when he had been living in the Regent's Park area of London.

He probably had a brother called Thomas, born abt 1819, also in an unknown part of Gloucestershire who showed up as a boarder with Henry's ex-wife/widow in London in 1871.

His occupation was 'railway porter' in 1851. He may be on the 1841 census, also in London as a journeyman ironmonger. I cannot be certain that this is him though.

There doesn't appear to any sign of either Henry or Thomas on the 1841 census in Gloucestershire though.

Smith and Simmons family, St Catherine Gloucestershire

My research into this family has found that Hannah Smith b.c. 1816, married John Simmons in 1842. They had three sons, James b.c. 1843, Thomas b. 1845 and John, b.c. 1848. I have birth certificate for Thomas, Hannah is listed as his mother. However, in 1851 Census, Hannah's sister, Emma (b.c. 1811) is recorded as John Simmons' wife. I can't find a death for Hannah nor a marriage for Emma and John. The family information I have is that both Hannah and Emma married John Simmons. I understand that it was not possible to marry one's late wife's sister so could be why I can't find a marriage. Is anyone else researching these families? Or can assist.
I am researching the family of Henry Hignell who came to Ontario, Canada circa 1855 from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. His mother was Marinda Goulding, father John Hignell, brother Frederick, sisters Sarah and Emma. I believe Frederick lived in Bilston, Staffordshire in 1871 with his wife Hannah, children William, Mary, Emma, Hannah, Thomas, Amelia and his mother-in-law, hannah Corfield.

Iam seeking information about the Hignall/Hignell Family he left behind when he came to Canada. I shall share information about Henry and his family here in Canada.

Hi,
I'm trying to research these families, especially the GANGE line. I'm having problems with John Gange (1861-1913). He was born in Oldham, Lancs, according to the 1891 & 1901 censuses, but there is no record of his birth, so I'm stuck!! Any ideas?
Also, any other people researching the other lines?
David

Bristol Street Directory 1911 - Any suggestions?

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions of where I could confirm an address in Bristol of my grandfather's family. After so many dead ends, our next step is the upcoming 1911 census. As most of you are aware the house number, parish, city and county must be correct. Since we only get one chance with a payment if we do this early, I am trying to work on this information now.

The last we have is my Grandfather George Mahoney's Primary School registration in 1910 (he was 7), but I must be sure they were still there in 1911 during the census. The family moved a lot, hence my inquiry.

FATHER:
Philip Mahoney (Engine Fitter or Electrical Engineer)
MOTHER:
Kate (Downey) Mahoney
101 Hotwell Road, Bristol UK.

Can anyone offer any help with this?

Powell--Gloucester-1600s

I am trying to track down any information at all on a family found in Gloucester city itself. A John Powell was sheriff of Gloucester in 1660, Mayor in 1663. He had 2 children that I have found so far, Mary who married Robert Huntington in 1692 (he became Bishop of Raphoe) and John, who was born in 1645 and died in 1713, unmarried. John the elder was believed to have actually come from Herefordshire. Mary and Robert Huntington had at least one child, a daughter Anna Maria born in 1698, so I would assume that Mary herself was born no earlier than roughly 1645.

I have found an article from 1803 that indicates this Gloucester family is somehow connected to an Irish Powell family I have been researching since 2000. Richard Powell of Co. Limerick (born circa 1718, death after 1755) was described in the article as "lineally descended from John Powell, a younger branch of the family of Judge Powell, who lies interred under a stately monument in the chancel of the cathedral in Gloucester; which John being sent into Ireland after the resettlement of that kingdom by King James the First". So, I know that John had to have been sent to Ireland sometime after about 1609, since the resettlement began about then. The oldest positively known ancestor of Richard is a Robert Powell, born circa 1620 and dying in 1671. It is believed that he is a son of the John described in the article. Given that Robert has a brother who died in 1691, we believe it likely the men were children of a couple born circa 1590.

Given the time frames I have for Judge Powell (1645-1713), and what one could extrapolate from what my research has already turned up about the Irish group, it would appear that John, the father of Judge Powell, was NOT the same person as the John sent to Ireland and that the lineal descent began at least one generation before the mayor lived.

Is there anyone out there who knows the ancestry of the mayor, or is there anyone who could point me towards something that could help solve this puzzle.

Cindy Wood
cwood91262@aol.com

YEEND family

Searching for Yeend family, from Gloucestershire to US probably around 1851. Parents married on May 31, 1835 in St. Mary's Church in Cheltenham. Children on voyage included Amelia, John, Judith, Edith, Lucy (m. Culler), Carrie and Minnie. Lucy was the youngest. Children born in the US were Rose/Rosa and James Charles (m. Clara Stewart). I don't know parents names, but may be same as some of the children. The family left a son in the St. Mary's Cemetery, I don't know name but he was five when he died. They lived in Cheltenham in a brown stone house with an ivy-covered cottage nearby where their servants, a gardener and his wife, lived. They left behind lots of family, including a cousin who died at 60+ years, a spinster, who was the village florist. If any info, please contact: lorenar@theriver.com Thank you, Lorena

John MARSHALL, miner from Bristol

A question was forwarded on a mailing list that I receive. I have asked whether I can post the question in a few family history message boards.
A FRIEND of mine wrote from Mexico: "A British miner resting at our San Julian silver-gold project near Guadalupe y Calvo in the Sierra Madre of Chihuahua, was called John Marshall."

John, who came from Bristol, lived from 1852 to 1902.

His workers wrote on his gravestone that they greatly appreciated him.

Any help in identifying this miner would be much appreciated.

Terry

Further to my query reagarding miner John Marshall I have attached pictures of his headstone and grave location. From the FreeBMD site it shows that a John Marshall was born in Bedminster (registration district of south Bristol) during the first quarter of 1850. This search has now created quite a bit of interest in the Mexico mining fraternity and I have also attached a transcription on the headstone below.

The mining company where my friend works are drilling on the hill near John Marshall's grave as it contains a number of rich gold and silver veins. The San Julian exploration property and the John Marshall vein discovery are mentioned on the company's website www.fresnillopic.com My friend David Giles works for Penoles and its subsidiary Fresnillo plc.

"Sacred
To The Memory of
John Augustus Marshall
Borm in Bristol, England
March 12, 1850
Died in San Julian, Mexico
September 18, 1902
They Rest from their
Labours And Their
Works Do Follow Them

"Como Un
Testimonio
DE Carino
Este
Recuerdo
Los Empleados De El"

The Spanish part can be translated as follows:

"As a testimony of Affection We, His Employess
Consecrate This Memory"

This Spanish bit suggests that maybe he was a fairly significant member of the mining team.

Best Wishes

Terry
I have a couple of pictures of the grave but awaiting permission to post.

I will pass on any information that is found on him

Pace and Jordan Families

I am researching George Pace born 1815 in Beverstone who married Fannie Mirah Jordan. Fannie was born in Ledbrook { could be Lydbrok} per the 1851 census, about 1822. They were married in 1843. Would anyone have access to a census of prior years to help identify her parents? Two of their sons, George Wm. and Lemuel, immigrated to the US in about 1869. I am a descendent of George William who died in Morgan County, Missouri. Thanks

Its a long shot because the marriage may not have taken place in Gloucester, but is there any marriage of a Henry Pasons to an Amelia maiden name unknown, would perhaps be in the Pucklechurch or Thornbury area of the county both Ameila and Henry Parsons were born around 1811, although they were not born in Gloucester, all there Children were born in the area, so they may both have moved there, child Emma Parsons born around 1838/1840 in Thornbury is my direct ancestor.

JaniceTeisar05@aol.com

Charles Piff m Louisa Nash 1898 Looking gor Children Lilian and Beatrice

I am trying to find the children of Charles and Louisa Piff nee Nash they seem to have vanished, also the son Louisa had before marrying Charles.

As far as I know Louisa had Gordon Joseph Nash 1889, before she married Charles Piff. His birth is recorded on Free BMD.
Louisa Married Charles in 1898 they had two children have found the birth and christening of them
Lilian Lucy b June qtr Christened July 28th 1901 Staverton
Beatrice Emma b june Qtr 1904 Christened 15th May 1904
Louisa Died and was buried 11th Aug 1906 Staverton. The family lived at Staverton Post Office but did not seem to run it, so wonder if another family member lived and worked there.
My husband can remember Charles, Edgar, James and Francis, his father being Thomas, but has no recollection of Beatrice or Lillian, or Gordon. I can find nothing on free BMD for either marriages or deaths of these children nor can I find Gordon in 1901 census. Seems very strange. Have tried looking under Nash as well for the girls but nothing that really fits.
Charles then married a Alice Eskins 21st August 1907 and they had three children, they lived at various addresses in Staverton. Thomas James and Francis.
Charles died 6th May 1912 and was buried May 12th 1912 Staverton
Their last child was Francis was born March qtr Tewkesbury and christened April 6th 1913.
Alice had two children before her marriage to Charles being Charles and Edgar.
Wondered if they went into an orphage and where adopted but not sure where to look to find that information and whether it is possible to trace whether they where adopted.
