As you can see above Joseph has given a few different ages on the census and it's hard to read what his place of Birth says on the census. Ancestry translates it as Barra or Buraw in Gloucestershire and Find My Past translates it as Burrow, Gloucestershire. The census that lists his place of birth as Bristol I think is just a genuine mistake by the person who originally filled in the form as that was his wife's place of birth. In the censuses above he is living in Monmouthshire with his wife Maria Cox.
I also have his marriage certificate (married in Monmouthshire) which would give his birth year as 1828 and states his father is deceased as of 1857 but also had the name "Joseph Giles".
I would have thought this information would have been enough to find him on the 1841 and 1851 censues but I haven't been able to. I then thought the only option I had left was to look in the Gloucestershire Parish records for him, so I bought the Gloucestershire Baptism Indexes for 1813-1837. Once again no one fits the information I have.
Just in case the Bristol birth place wasn't a mistake, I also searched the Baptism records for that period, but he's not there either.
So can anyone help or offer any advice on what to do next? Also can anyone help on his birthplace? Perhaps if I could narrow that down and get a registration district for it, it would be a start!
