Can anyone help at all with the following?
WASTIE is a very old (and rare) surname in Oxfordshire, so unusual that most of the WASTIEs are connected to each other!
I have traced my own WASTIE line back to Richard WASTIE (d. 1664 in Eynsham, Oxfordshire). According to his will, he had a son called Ethelbert (bapt. 1630 in Swerford, Oxfordshire) and also an uncle Ethelbert (d. 1635 in Oxfordshire). This uncle also had a son, "another" Ethelbert (d. c1633 in Oxfordshire).
Imagine my surprise, when browsing the Family Search website, to find the following baptism:
05 JUN 1695 - Ethelbert WASTY, s. Ethelbert - Rodborough, Gloucestershire
I have now found what looks like the marriage of this Ethelbert's parents:
04 MAY 1691 - Ethelbirrt WASTLY and Elizabeth PARCHAR - Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire
According to a note with the parish registers, the parish clerk was illiterate which accounts for the misspelling (PARCHAR should be PARKER)!
Given the unusual forename and surname, I cannot believe that these Gloucestershire Ethelberts (father and son) are not somehow connected to my own WASTIEs, but given the dates of death of the Oxfordshire ones there seems to be at least a couple of generations missing.
Gloucestershire is a new area of research for me, so I'm struggling a little - can anyone throw any light on the above, or point me in the right direction regarding any online records that may help.
Many thanks for any and all help!
Penny
