Hi people I just wondered if there was any advice that you could give me.

I'm looking for a William Hemmerman, born 1866 in Whitechapel. London. The only problem is there was 2 born that year with the exact same name! Now the surname is extremley rare and has many variations such as Hammerman and Heinmerman etc.

I know my William married a Mary Elizabeth Allison in Barton Upon Humber, Lincolnshire. But I dont know which is his birth in order to find his parents and siblings.

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Emma.

I am a Selvage through my father's side, and have been told repeatedly that we are Blueblood English, so I wanted to find out more about my family, marriages, locations in England, etc.
I don't know much, but my grandfather is James Preston Selvage (or Preston James,) married to Patricia Carlin, then later divorced; who had three children, my uncle James Selvage, my father Craig Carlin, and my Aunt.
Where is Chief Side, England?

I have an ancestor named Charles Edward Tidswell, born April 3, 1856 in Chief Side, England, or so the story goes. His parents are John C Tidswell and Mary E Sharp, both born in England, and that's all I know. I can't come up with any info on Chief Side though, and I'm wondering if it is a very small town, or a nickname of somewhere? If you know anything about the location, I'd appreciate the help. Thank you!

Where can I access old maps of certain areas, Multimap only deals with modern day towns etc. I don't want sites where you have to pay to get an antique! Only the ones where you can see the area before it may have been modernised and the older houses demolished. I'm mainly interested in the 19th century, just to see where my ancestors lived. Thanks

Hi there,

I was hoping that someone maybe able to help me. I have a birth location, on a census return for 1851, of Clay Hills. Has anyone come across this place before or know of a place locally that may have been called Clay Hills. I was thinking that it may have been another term for Clent Hills, but would you have said that you were born in Clent hills or Clent?

I have done some googling and multimap searching and the only places I can find are in the south east of England.

Regards

Carl.

Today I received the following reply from findmypast regarding an email I sent them yesterday.

Thank you for your email.

The existing marriage records available on the site will remain however the GRO (General Records Office) will not be distributing any more Birth, Marriages or Death records in future as the law has now changed on this.

That means that therre will be no new records EVER for marriages after 2005 and births and deaths after 2006 that we can easliy access.

Further to my posting yesterday I thought it was marriage records only but in fact it is ALL idexes.
Why? We dont know. What is the change is the law exactly? We dont know.
I know this is a backward step and very worrying for future research.
An email today from another web site has advised that they now have 2006 birth and death records online but due to a change in legislation all marriage records from 2006 onwards will no longer be made available to search online and that you have to approach the local office where the event took place directly. (Yes thats the information we want to search for!)
This is the first I have heard of this. Does anyone else know about it? It looks like the thin end of the wedge before all new records willl not be made available online to me. Okay these are new records but they are useful in tracing living relatives as well. This in my opinion is bad news for the genealogy community regarding English/Welsh records.

Birth registered as legitimate - could it be illegitimate?

I wonder if anyone can help me with this query. My late grandfather said that his father had an "illegitimate" family before he married my great-grandmother. I now have the birth certificates of these children, and they were all registered by their mother only, as though she was married to their father (i.e. she gives her surname and maiden name, and the father's name although he was not present at the registration). The births were registered in the 1880's and 1890's in London. My question is this: is it possible that the parents were not married? Would she have got away with this, or would the registrar have checked that they were married? I have not been able to find any record of a marriage between them.

Details on a death certificate

I have a death certificate from 1952. In the section giving detail of the informant it reads 'W. Goodwin, causing the body to be buried ...' then gives an address.

As the lady died in hospital and was unmarried, is it safe to assume that the informant was either a friend, and the address is hers, or a nurse or official from the hospital? And the phrase 'causing the body to be buried', I know she was buried in an unmarked grave, so does that me she had no family or friends to bury her?

I've just found out that the informant lived in the next street to the cemetary where my lady was buried. Co-incidence?

All very sad sounding!

Many thanks

Andrea

I have been searching for a relative and her family with no luck after 1911. It has been suggested that as she had married a German or Austrian national (Name Beyer) in 1910 that they may have been interred during WW1. Does anyone know where I would go to look into this further? I am hoping it is possible online as I do not live in England!(I have gone through the GRO indexes looking for a marriage or death to no avail and think they may have left the country or changed their name.)
Thnak you, Karen

Coroners report from 1950

Hi

is it possible to get a copy of a coroners report/inquest from 17th March 1950?

i am trying to trace my Irish side of family and unfortunately am not getting very far, as my father is dead and so can't get any info there.

My Grandfather, Eugene Reilly, died in March 1950. His death certificate states "when and where died" that "Found dead 14th March 1950 on Railway Line at Viaduct, Chester-le-street, U.D.
His address at that time was 10 Seventh Avenue, Chester-Le-Street and that he was a General Labourer.
Cause of death was " Multiple severe injuries accidentally sustained when run over by a railway train while trespassing on the railway line".
Informant was "Certificate received from W.M Patterson coroner for East (Chester) ward of Coy Durham. Inquest held 17th March 1950"

I also have his marriage certificate which states that he was 30 yo on date of marriage, 6/10/1932, address was 32 Rutland Road, Ilford. His fathers name was Patrick Joseph Reilly who was a fireman.

I am trying to trace Irish records and am hoping that a coroners report may reflect his date of birth as well as place of birth, this will help me in tracing in Ireland.

Any info given will be greatly appreciated

Thanks, Andrea

What sources might exist for indenture sale records 1740's?

Researching the Scottish Rebel prisoners transported in 1747 on the Ship Gildart. Recent findings indicate the actual auction took place on board the vessel very near or at Port Tobacco,Maryland. This would be offshore of Charles and St. Mary's counties Maryland.

The legal agreement signed September 25, 1746 to transport these men was between Richard Gildart of Liverpool and the English Treasury. I am trying to determine if the bill of sale for each prisoner would have been sent back to England, for proof that the prisoners were indeed serving their indentures. Is anyone familiar with those procedures and aware of where such records, if any, might exist in England?

Thank you.

Josiah Harris with spouse emigrated to Sweden abt 1834

Im searching for Josiah Harris, who emigrated to Sweden in 1834. He appears in Undenäs parish in late 1834, but with no other notice than "place of origin: England".
However, it has been said in the family that he was of Scotish origin.
He and his wife, Mary, are one of the last families to arrive in Undenäs that year, and in the parish book of births there is a notice of a dauther born in 1834. However it is more likely that she is born in the UK or on their way to Undenäs - perhaps in some other Swedish parish. How and when the emigrated I have no record of, and I have no knowledge of the most common ways of emigration from the UK to Sweden was, but perhaps they emigrated via Göteborg (Gothenburg)?

Josiah is, in the immigration book, to be born in 1808 and Mary in 1809, but where?
In the death certificate/"book of death" of Undenäs, he is said to died on 5 of November in 1859 at the age of 51 years 5 months and 27 days, which means that he should be born 1808-05-09 (May fifth).

If anyone has ANY information on the family of Josiah and Mary Harris, I am open to ANY suggestion!

with regards // Martin Bergström

British rule of Hanover in 1800s? Any records or censuses?

We have traced my family back as far as a Henry Ferris b. in Hanover about 1832. By 1858, he had immigrated to NY where my great great grandfather and siblings were all born. According to my aunt, my great uncle claimed the Ferris' were originally of English and Scottish descent.

I know Hanover was closely tied and under British rule during the 17 and 1800s until 1837. I was thinking they left Hanover shortly after the British lost any political leverage.

I've searched without luck and was wondering if there are any Hanover censuses or British censuses of citizens living in Hanover?

Handwritten additions on GRO birth records

I have noticed many typewritten pages of the GRO records contain handwritten additions.

I had assumed that these were merely corrections of omissions, but now I have noticed that the page number is frequently suffixed with "A" or simply described as "see [AN]" where A is an alpha character and N is a number.

I am looking at births in the early 1950's, but suspect the phenomenon apples quite broadly.

Could someone please explain the significance of these additions, and the strange page-numbering?

Are there any restrictions who can order birth & death certificates in England?

I'd like to know if "anyone" can order a copy of someone else's English birth and death certificates when the birth and death has taken place in recent times, say between 20 to 50 years ago? I don't see anything about this online.

I live in the United States and I'm used to all the restrictions, such as only the person named, or a parent, or child of said person, or grandparent of the person named on the certificate can get a copy. If I request copies for a birth 50 years ago and a death 25 years ago, could I get them without being one of the above mentioned? I have the forms and I've read all the instructions and even checked online but I don't see any restrictions mentioned.

Also, do they require a copy of my "picture identification", as vital records offices require in the States? I didn't see any mention of this online.

Also, I have all the information needed to identify the persons in question, but I don't have the Index Reference because the indexes online only go to about 1929. Will this cause a problem, an extra delay, even if I give them the exact date and name of person plus location?

Another thing, when reading the forms and online instructions, it says to give exact information as on the certificate, and if one item is incorrect according to the certificate, they will write back and say my information wasn't correct, or they will ask if I want the document anyway? For instance, if I say the person was a "writer" and the certificate says "journalist", they can reject my request. How can I explain to them that I want it with any info differences as long as it's for the person who was born or died on the correct day and most of my information is correct?

Thank you for any clarification you can give. My head is spinning.

Question re: England Marriage Registration Records

I believe I found the marriage registration for my gr gr gr grandparents. However, the page numbers differ for the entry, the groom's entry is on page 527, and the bride's entry is on page 327. Should the page numbers for both groom and bride match? Could this possibly be a transciption error? The marriage registration information was found online. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi

The image attached is a scan from a English birth certificate from 1856. This is the "name, surname and maiden surname of mother" as well as "occupation of father" part of the certificate.

Can someone with a "trained eye" tell me what it says?

Regards
Lee Francis

baptismal practices early 19th century in England

I seem to have two early-19th century families that did not baptize all of their children.

Is this unusual, or not so much? Does it indicate a particular church or sect of a church?

The first lived in Cambridgeshire. They baptized a few children, one of whom has a burial record. But most of the children that appear in the 1841 census do not have baptismal records. The family did not move during this time.

The second lived in Northumberland. There seem to be 4 baptized children (with no associated burial record in the parish). But now I seem to have found 2 children that were not baptized (one being my 3ggrandmother, the other being a daughter the mother is living with in 1841, with her family). I have not been able to locate the baptized children--but with names like "George Gilmore" and 3 counties minimum, I'm not sure I can!

Maps of England circa 1945

"New Popular Edition Maps" circa 1945 for all of England at a scale of "1"
to the mile are available for viewing at:

http://www.npemap.org.uk/

View England in the immediate post war period. At this scale there is a
wealth of topographic and cultural information available.

The site is also undertaking a most interesting project. They are
endeavouring to build a data base of Post Codes for mapping purposes. See
the Guardian

http://technology.guardian.co.uk/weekly/story/0,,1936557,00....

As you browse the map (assuming you can identify your home address circa
1945) you can add your own Post Code to their data base. Apparently they are
able to get around the monopoly of the Post office as they are using out of
copyright maps. A second project ( http://www.freethepostcode.org/ ) is
also attempting to do the same, this time using GPS as the source of data
input for their post code data base. Currently "New Popular Edition Maps"
have 92% of the outward portion of the Post Codes identified. Their coverage
of Ireland and Scotland is scant. They have isolated 72% of the Post code
sectors and by my count they have 8200+ outward portion plus one digit of
the inward portion, of the Post Code.

At some point this data may become useful for mapping contemporary surname
distributions, assuming you have a source of surname Post Codes

1916 England Death Record - What Information Would It Contain?

What information would an England 1916 death record contain?
I'm trying to find out the date of birth of someone who died that year, their parents names and birthplace.
Would the death record include that information?
Do I have to know where in England the deceased's family resided to find the death record for that location?
Also would there be a separate church death record for the deceased separate and apart from the civil death record?

Thanks for any information.

Can anyone tell me what town or parish Forest Gate would have come under in about 1860? I am researching a wife of an ancestor and on the census she says that she was born in Forest Gate but having searched all of the birth records online from 1858 to 1870 have not come across one person from that area.

Thanks
tad

Another Q on quarterly marriage indexes

I'm looking for a marriage that would have occurred beween 1901 and 1910. However, I have at least some reason to believe the couple never actually got married. Can anyone tell me how complete the original quarterly marriage indexes are considered to be? In other words, if I search the indexes every way I can think of - considering alternate spellings etc, and it simply is not there, is it reasonable to conclude the marriage did not happen, or is it just as likely it happened but did not get registered? Or put another way, are the indexes believed to contain 99.9% of all marriages that occurred, or only 50, 60 or 70%? That's what I'm trying to get a feel for before drawing any conclusions. Thanks.

Marriage Certificates, the Father

Is the Father in a marriage certificate always the biological father? I have 2 certificates from the 1840s in which the father's surname differs, one for a groom and the other for a bride, although the bride is named as a spinster.

In the latter case the 'father' appears to be living in the same building as the bride in the 1841 Census. I am wondering if the church sometimes recorded the name of the man who gave the bride away, if the father was unknown.

In the case of the man, his christening in 1823 gives only his mother's name. Yet a man with quite a different surname is recorded in the marriage certificate as his father.

Richard
what English records are likely to name father for out-of-wedlock child?

Has anyone had any experience trying to find the name of the father of a child who appears to be born out of wedlock in the 1850s? I have not ordered a birth certificate yet...is it likely to be on a certificate?
Is it likely to be in baptismal records?
The birth occurred between the 1851 and 1861 English censuses. In the 1851 census the mother is listed as a servant with a Paddington, Middlesex, England family that included 5 servants. The mother left England in 1857 with the child, listing him with her maiden surname on a ship's passenger list.
The mother married shortly after arriving in New York City in 1857, to someone from her hometown in England, and then followed her intention of settling in Canada.

Since I've had no luck on Google or any other search engine, I'm sure that this is a misspelling of a former town or county. I found the reference in some old, old notes of a family member. My gggg grandfather Antner? Dean is supposed to be buried in the "Old Preston Churchyard" in Tabbeshire. Other references place this ancester in Bristol and Lancashire so perhaps Tabbeshire is in one of those areas? Any help greatly appreciated!! Shawn Burks
Use of Quarterly Marriage indexes?

I'm confused about how to read the original quarterly marriage indexes. I'm looking for a marriage between 1890 and 1910. The indexes are alphabetical by last name each quarter, and under the last name is a list of first names, then the district in which the marriage was recorded, and the page and line number in resgistry. OK, but a marriage involves 2 people, and the names are not paired. And the names under any given surname are both men and women. So is only one party to the wedding record in the index, and it's only recorded under the name of whoever showed up to register? Or are both names recorded, but one under the man's surname, and the wife's under her maiden name? Or if only the wife recorded it, is she likely to have reigistered under her married name or maiden name? I can't know if I've found what I am looking for because I don't know what I'm supposed to be looking for.

For example - If I know Arthur Abbott married Alice Miller, but I'm not sure in which quarter, should I look for entires under Arthur Abbott, Alice Miller, or Alice Abbott. And most importantly, do I need to find both names in the same quarter, or will I only find one? Help?

Could someone please tell me where the town or village of Rutley is? I have been unable to find it on any atlas. My great-great-great grandparents, Thomas and Anna Fox, were from Rutley. They left there for Plymouth, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA in about 1860
I am working on some ancestors with the 1861 Wales census. They list some birthplaces that I am not familiar with and hope maybe someone can help identify them. I am guessing they list the county then the town/village.

First is Kent Erith, there is an Erith in Kent, so I guess I got that one.

Next is Lincoln and what looks like "Longtaft"? Any ideas?

Finally Kent and what looks like "Bealy"...anything?

Thanks in advance.

English Courts 1812-1822

I'm trying to better understand the structure and location of some of the various English Courts in the 1812-1822 time period. I'm trying to locate several related court cases and need a little help understanding where to look. Any direction appreciated, I'm not looking for a look-up, just advice on where to search for records.

Here's what I'm working with:

1. A case that occurred between 1813 and 1815 in the "Court of Common Pleas. The judge was Sir Vicary Gibbs. I know who the plantiff was but not the defendant. The case involved parties in both London and Leith. Where would I begin to search for this case?

2. Another related case in 1815 in the "Court of Admiralty". I know the names of both the plantiff and defendant here.

3. A case that concluded on 27 Feb 1817 and was held in the "Second Division". I think this was a House of Lords case but am not sure. This case involved a "Bill of Suspension". Again I know the names of both parties.

4. Another case following the last one but for an "Action of Reduction".

5. Another related case in the "First Division" concluding on 3 Feb 1819. I'm pretty sure this would be in the House of Lords in the Archives of Parliment.

Thanks for any advice on where (and how) to search for these records given the information that I have.

--Brian

I checked the updated free England and Wales Birth, Marriage, and Death Indexes, 1837–1983 on Ancestry today. Lo and behold, I found the record of my ggggrandparents.

I have searched through all of the "inormation about this database" stuff. I know I need the info in the database to order a copy of the certificate. But how in the world do I do the ordering? That info isn't anywhere!

This is the first time I have actually located something in England, so it's very exciting but very, very confusing.

British Civil Service in late 1800's -

We have come up against a brick wall and hope someone has some info or suggestions on how to proceed.

Specifically, we are trying to locate DOUGLAS ALEXANDER LIND whose last address was listed in 1899/1900 as "Sois River nr Quaen Forest, South Africa". After this he seems to have vanished.
Military records have not turned up anything so the next possibility is that he joined the British Civil Service. It was a family tradition as he is the son of Francis Macan Lind, judge of the Bengal Presidency in the mid 1800's.The family was evidently well-to-do and lived both in India and in England. Could/would positions be bought for a son in this time frame?
Are there records for the British Civil Service and, if so, are they available to search and where? In searching for Civil Service lists should we be looking for one entity or would it have covered various government agencies? Any other ideas on what he may have been doing in SA at that time when the Boer War was going on?
Any suggestions or ideas greatly appreciated. Thanks.

BMD Records Question

Hello,
Wondering if anyone could answer my questions about obtaining birth, marriage and death records for England.

When I was on Ancestry.com, I looked in the BMD Index and found several ancestors I'm looking for (some births, some marriages and some deaths). The index tells me the year, place, volume and page for finding that entry.
Okay, now that I have that information, where can I get it from?
I know I could send away for it and get it from the GRO in England, which costs me around $20Can for each certificate, but does anyone know if there's another way of getting it?
Does anyone know if Salt Lake might have that?

My many thanks for looking at this message and giving me any advice!

Amber
Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
