Surnames: Reynell
Hello. Having trouble learning about these places located in central and southern England as they existed in the 12-16th century.

They were listed in a partial list of possessions by my 21st great grandfather, Richard Reynell (1150-1194). I'm trying to map all the places for my research. I found all the others, but Google just throws its hands up with these. I tried the Gazetteer too.

fta:
They had great 'revenues, offices, lordships and lands, in sundry shires' including Somerset, Cambridgeshire and Yorkshire, but their greatest possessions were in Devon and Cornwall.

I probably need some good old home knowledge of these places, please:

Watringdon

My guess for Upbutterley would be Upottery in Devon. Google it switch to the map results and habe a look round that area, you may find some more!

Nootcombe is almost certainly Nutcombe.
Not that that helps much as there are 4 different places/farms with that name in Devon according to the gazeteer.

You'll be lucky to find someone on these boards with detailed knowlege of 12th century Devon place names and their varied spellings.

If you're serious abouty this exercise you'll need to talk with the experts at Devon Archives. I'm sure the full context will be helpful too: context might give some idea whether the place is a property, or a hamlet, or a parish, or an area ...

Hi Rob,
Hidswell could be a version of Hinderwell (Hildswell) which comes from Hilda's Well. She was abbess of Whitby at the time of the 664 synod.

Fosse is commonly used for a waterfall in North Yorkshire.

Places starting with "Tre", "Pol" are likely in Cornwall.
