Parish records, Bishop's Transcripts, tithe maps, wills, and headstones are some examples of sources of pre-1837 information.
The IGI, found on FamilySearch.org, offers a partial index to vital records from around the world. This is an excellent source of information, but be sure to take anything found there that is submitted (not extracted from the records) with a grain of salt.
GENUKI at http://www.genuki.org.uk/ offers guidance to those researching UK family history and should not be missed.
