I have encountered the unusual surname TORRIBLE from Harwich in Essex in the late 18th & early-19th centuries. James TORRIBLE (1816-1878), apparently the son of James & Henrietta (Burrows) TORRIBLE of Harwich immigrated to New Orleans around 1840. He married Sarah DUFF, born in Scotland, and had four children. By 1848 they had changed their surname to BURROWS (perhaps due to puns on horrible and terrible). Looking at the 1881 census, there were still a few TORRIBLEs in White Notley. If any has any interest in this surname, please contact me. (I searched the message boards and the name has apparently never been mentioned before on these forums.)
