On the 1871 census it shows John Palmer Master Mariner and his family living at 41 Robinson Street South Bishopwearmouth Sunderland. I am hoping that somebody else is researching this family. John is my gtgrandfather and he was born in 1835 in Goole Yorkshire; his father was William Palmer and I'm afraid that is all the info I have of his parents. Can anyone help me find John Palmer please?

Where to visit in County Durham?

Greetings,
I will be visiting County Durham in a week or so and may have a full day to do some genealogy research. My ancestors (Forster/Foster/Hardy/Robinson/Singlewood) are mostly from the Willington area and some from the Bishop Auckland area. I have most of these families fairly well documented (census, marriage/birth registrations) in the 1841-91 period, so my main priorities for me during my visit would be if there are some libraries or record offices that might have family files (e.g., files pertaining to particular families with records of reseach requests/responses and family histories) and name-listings of graves in local cemeteries or church yards. Given my limited time, my main question is where best to spend it? Any thoughts you have would be very much appreciated!

Thanks,
Mike from Seattle

South Thornby? Place in Durham?

Hello,
I have located a friend's 3x great grandfather in Tynemouth in the 1851 Census. His birthplace seems clearly written as "South Thornby". I can't find it on modern maps and the county name is obscured. He was George HASWELL, Mariner, born abt.1765.
Ancestry has transcribed the place in the index as "South Thoresby" but that is in Lincolnshire. Has anybody any idea of where he was born, please? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Jack Allen (West Midlands)
I'm tracing my great grandfather Thomas Murphy, born in Sunderland 1885 and married Louisa Hubbick in 1911. He played football in the BankHead Albion Football Team and I have a faint copy of an article and photo from Northern Echo, 1/6/1978 of the Bank Head Albion Football Team who won the Durham Amateur Cup in the 1907/08 season. It was taken outside the Dubmire Workmen's Club. Wondering if anyone is familiar with the Team and how I can obtain a better copy - have contacted the Echo but they don't seem to have copies of the newspaper available. Any info on Thomas or Louisa would be great.

Thanks very much.

I am going to be visiting this area about June 19. My gr. grandfather, John Moffitt came from Greensides. I would like to communicate with someone that know the area. I am hoping to find the house that he lived in. The name was orginally Murthwaite in the 1700's. My gt. grandfather came to the US in 1850. He was a coal miner. He left a brother William and a grandmother Hannnah behind. I would like if possible find their gravesites as well. I have been in Ryton and Greensides once 12 years ago so am somewhat familiar with the area. I have the Moffitt genealogy back to the early 1700's.

He is not on the 1841 census with his wife Emma - presumably away at sea - and a possible entry I have for Emma in 1851 shows that she is a widow.

I am assuming he was born around 1800 but this may be wrong, and I don't know whereabouts he was born.

Emma and Robert's children were Mary Ann Heslop b 1825, Robert Heslop b 1827 and another Robert Heslop b 1829, all born in Stockton on Tees and christened in St Thomas parish church, Stockton.

Can anyone help me? We also know that she had a son, Steven in 1974, and she died hours after the birth. I am looking for her grave, possibly located near "The Gilley Law" area of Sunderland, which is where she was living at the time of her death (I have located Gillian's death record and Steven's birth record).

Birth/Baptismal look up request for ROBINSON children in Durham

I am trying to learn the maiden name of my gg-grandmother, Margaret Ann (#1, see listing of census records below), who married Robert Robinson. Since Robinson is such a common name it's difficult for me to pinpoint a specific marriage record for them (nor do I have a specific marriage date). I do, however, have pretty conclusive census record listings (1861-1891) of them that might help locate a birth record for one or more of their children which might list her maiden name. Possiblities include:

(#11) John Robinson, b 1851-1852 in Byers Green or Newfield
(#12) Mary Ann Robinson (my g-grandmother), b 28 Feb 1855 (from grave marker) in Gateshead or Blue Quarries
(#13) Robert Robinson, b 1860 in Willington
(#14) Catherine Robinson, b 1863-1865 in Willington

Can anyone, therefore, help me pinpoint a birth or baptismal record for any of these children that have a father named Robert Robinson and a mother named Margaret? Or can anyone recommend where I can search to find these details?
GIBSON in St Hilda's disaster 1839 help needed

I'm new to this but I've been tracing my Gibson family and think that my Gx3 Grandad BENJAMIN GIBSON was killed in the explosion along with 2 of his sons. I know for definite that my Gx2 Grandad ALEXANDER was baptised in 1822 in Long Benton the son of Benjamin and Jane Gibson. There is another baptism of another son Richard in 1824. One of the sons killed in the mining disaster was Richard Gibson and the age of the son fit my evidence and the age of Benjamin is roughly the same as Jane. I also know that on the 1841 census Jane is listed as a widow living on independant means. But how can I find out for defininate that the Gibsons killed in the mine were my relatives? I've read the report on the DMM site and although convinced myself would like some evidence to back it up. And would Jane have been given a pension for the loss of husband and sons?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

parents of Mary Isabella THOMPSON who m. Benjamin SWINHOE 1875 in Sunderland

Mary Isabella Thompson, aged 19, married Benjamin Swinhoe in Sunderland in 1875. Her father was one Richard Thompson, Shipwright, according to the marriage register details. I am trying to trace back her family and I have reason to believe that Mary Isabella may have been illegitimate, as I am having extreme difficulty finding her living with a father of that name in the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

One likely candidate was a Richard Weatherburn Thompson, shipwright, (born S. Shields) who married Barbara Morton in 1860, but I have not been able to connect her conclusively with this family. Other possibilities have also proved to be dead ends. Can anyone help to shed light on this mystery?

DODDS burials at Chester le Street

Hello, I wondered if anyone could help me find information about the death of William Dodds (b. 1857) during the December quarter of 1876. His parents were living at Pelton on the 1871 Census, so I presume he died there. Thought there might be a record of his burial somewhere in the Chester le Street area.

His sister Isabella Dodds (b. 1852) is shown on the 1861 Census with her parents at Cramlington but no sign of her on the 1871 Census. Cant find any trace of her marriage so thought that she too may have died in the Chester le Street area.

Any help would be much appreciated.

thank you.

Linda

Need info please - LOGAN in Morpeth, Durham

I am looking for my grandmother's family. I know she had three brothers born in Morpeth, Durham, NBL...they were William Logan b. 1919, James Oliver Logan b. 1921, and Robert Logan b. 1922. (all listed with mother's maiden name as Bottoms)

My grandmother was Catherine Logan b. 1923 and family rumor has it that thier mother died in childbirth with another sister, Doreen around 1926/27.

Grandmother had a very tough life and spoke rarely of her life before moving to the US in 1950. What she told us was this....

Her mother died when she was three during childbirth. Her sister Doreen was taken away by relatives to be raised. Her father moved her and her brothers in with his sister and her family where my grandmother was treated poorly (possibly abused). Around age fifteen she joined the WWII efforts with the Salvation Army. She told us stories about how she had to steal food before that. She mentioned that Uncle Bobby (Robert b. 1922) died at age 19 from TB. Uncle Willie (William b. 1919) also died young but I cannot remember the story of how. Then Uncle Jimmy (Jame b. 1921) married and never had children. His wife was Elsie (Grant???).

Grandmother married Leslie Markwell (Markwells from Holy Island) and they moved with their children, Eileen Heather b July 1944, Alexandra Whilamina b May 1947, and Edward John b April 1950 to Chicago IL in Nov/Dec 1950. Then in Dec 1953 they had a son, Kenneth Lee.

After she passed away this past May, I realized I could never ask her all the things about her and her family and her history that I wanted to for years. I always thought there would be more time.

I have no documents to use as a starting point and I have not been able to find much information on Ancestry about them. Her father was possibly Bernard Logan but we really don't know for sure. Her mother was most likely Jane Bottoms but again, we are not sure.

Thank you for reading my long post and for any help you are able to give.

Jennifer

Connecting 2 Joseph Todd THOMPSONs of Durham, 1767 and 1876

Joseph Todd Thompson was born 1767- son of George and Isabella(Todd-b.1729,Sunderland)Thompson.
He married Elizabeth Burnett and had son George, b. abt 1796. Elizabeth died in July 1799.

Joseph T Todd remarried, a Mary- and had Joseph b. abt 1809. There may have been other children but I've only found Joseph. Joseph, b. 1809- varied his age between censuses. He had 4 daughters. Lived in Seaham and surrounds.
He died in 1871.

A Joseph Todd Thompson was born 1876, son of Richard and Margaret.

Richard Thompson was born abt 1837 (not in GRO)- father George, mother Margaret.
George lists his age as born 1801. Suspect the family is in Easington in 1841, but other Thompson family members added to family in 1851 are suspect.

The original George and Isabella Thompson family lived in Sunderland.

Also in the mix is a John Thompson, b. 1795, son of Robert and Eleanor (Young) Thompson-son of George and Isabella. Robert was dead before 1804, leaving no other issue.(Info from mother Isabella's Will in 1804)
However John had no son Richard that I have found. Lived in Bishopwearmouth.

I am trying to connect the latter day Joseph Todd Thompson, b. 1876, with the Joseph Todd Thompson b. 1767. Believe it is through George but dates are proving a problem.

COOMBS family from Sunderland

I have a bit of a mystery here. There was a John Coombs who married Ann Myers Nov.17th 1803 in Bishopwearmouth, Durham. They had a daughter, Jane born Dec30th 1805 in Monkwearmouth. My question is, were there any more children from this family? I am looking for a William Coombs born about 1809 his father's name would have been John but the mother's I am not sure of. I am trying to determine if William was born there or if in fact he was born in Devon. William was a mariner and married Ann Woodifield from Sunderland and raised their family there. Assuming for a moment that he was from Devon, could he have been stationed in Sunderland when he met Ann? The Coombs name is not common in Durham but is very common in Devon and Somerset. William and ann were the parents of Charles Swallow Coombs, my father's grandfather.
Thank you.
Tom.

Having seen your replies, it appears you may be able to help me tracing my family from up weardale. My greatgrandfather's name was John Walton. On all census returns, his place of birth is given as Stanhope; however from another census return his place of birth is shown as Hunshieldford, above St. John's Chapel. I do have his death certificate (this happened at Upsall, North Yorkshire) and also a copy of his marriage license (at Brotton, North Yorkshire). I cannot find any birth details; the ages given on the marriage license and on the death certificate dont equate. They give his birth year as being either 1824 and 1830. The difference may be explained by him being about twice his wife's age. Can you help at all, please?

However apart from that I have no other dates that are set in stone. I only know that Elizabeth Hindmarsh was from a large family and was 1 child of either 12 or 13.

Can anybody help me to get past this block? Either by being able to link it in with a line you are doing or suggest anywhere else I can look that can help me.

Thanks

Barry

My grandfather, Dennis Kidney, immigrated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA in 1861 and fought in the U.S. Civil War. In his discharge papers, he states that he was baptized in Durham at Fedoya Mummettshire (as far as I can make out). He was born in Durham in 1837,parents William Kidney and Bridget ? but I can find no other documentation on the family until their arrival in the U.S. Any clue what Fedoya Mummettshire is ---I know they were Irish, Roman Catholic living in England. William was born in Ireland in 1811.
Thanks in advance, Maureen
Does anyone know of this place?

Just to confuse things, on two earlier census returns he gives his birth place as Peth Head and Path Head which i think are two separate locations anyway!

any help gratefully received.

Rachaelx

Croudace / Crowdace from Durham to Monmouth late 1700s / early 1800s

I am researching the Croudace, Monmouthshire family tree and have been told that in the late 1700s / early 1800s two brothers of the name Crowdace / Croudace moved down from Durham starting my family tree. I am especially looking for a John Croudace who would have been born about 1807, but was living in Monmouth circa 1831, marrying a Mary Ann Morgan in St Briavels, Gloucestershire in 1835, he may have been born in Monmouth, or Durham, possibly coming down with his parents.
Other Croudace names that appear in Monmouthshire at this time include James, Elizabeth, Ann Jane and Mary Croudace.
If anyone is researching the Durham Crowdace / Croudace family trees please contact me.

MADDISON family: Tanfield and Whickham, Co. Durham (1722-present)

I am currently researching my family history and am particularly interested in the Maddisons of Tanfield and Whickham, County Durham, UK. I have traced my family back to Thomas Maddison, born about 1741, who married Elizabeth Wray at Tanfield on 9 May 1771 and died in Tanfield on 2 September 1814 aged 73.

His father, Thomas Maddison (d. May 1779 in Tanfield), was married to an Elizabeth (d. 23 Nov 1810 aged 94 in Tanfield). The only Thomas and Elizabeth Maddison I have so far found in all the surrounding parishes are Thomas Maddison and Elizabeth Leish, married in Whickham on 9 November 1740. Further, the only baptism I have found that appears to match my Thomas is that of Thomas, the youngest son of Thomas Maddison and Ruth Wood, baptised on 22 June 1740 at Whickham.

Thomas and Ruth were married on 25 February 1722/3 at Whickham and have three other sons baptised in the parish: Michael (6 April 1729), Edward (19 March 1731/2) and Ralph (23 May 1736), but after their son Thomas is baptised in 1740, they vanish from the records.

The questions I have are these:

i) Is the Thomas who married Ruth Wood the same as the one who married Elizabeth Leish?
ii) Even if the Thomas Maddison who married Ruth Wood is not the same as the one who married Elizabeth Leish, what happened to Ruth? I cannot find her burial record in either the Tanfield or Whickham registers!
iii) Who was the father of Thomas (d. 1779) - I have at least two possibilities from the Whickham registers, if indeed he came from there!

Any help would be much appreciated for any of these problems! Further, if anyone is connected to the Maddisons of Tanfield, Whickham, or Collierley/Dipton (where my branch ended up), and has further information, I would really like to hear from them!
