John Melhuish 1795 and Ann Crocker 1799

I've got as far as this couple in my Melhuish family tree. They were married 26 March 1820, Loxbeare, Devon. John of Loxbeare and Ann of Washfield. They lived in Washfield 1841 and 1851 (John birth place Stoodliegh) census. Ann is a widow on 1861 census. I have found 7 possible deaths between 1851-1861 for John, Tiverton, non of which state age at death so difficult to whittle down. I cannot be sure of his parents either.
Joseph and Elizabeth Wills are possible that I picked up from other member trees, however they are from Kenn, which is a fair distance from John stated birth place and their son John b. 18 Aug 1793, Kenn seems a little early and wrong b. place.
I found a b. for John 2 Apr 1795, parents Jacob and Elizabeth Parminter m. 9 Aug 1786 but Jacob is a surgeon and I find it hard to imagine a surgeons son becoming a poor farm labourer.
Finally, I found Thomas and Sarah Staddon, m. 10 Jan 1796 and they had a son John b. 4 Oct 1796, Tiverton.
If anyone can help me with any of the above I would be most grateful, or any tips on how I can get to the bottom of John's ancestry.
Thank you.
