My gt-grandfather (born c1854) was Samuel Snell whose birthplace on the 1881/91/01 census is given as Chiriton, Devon.

He married in Tiverton in 1877 to Emma Toze and in 1880 moved to Tynewyyd in Glamorgan where he died in 1936.

On his marriage certificate his father is John Snell.

I can't find a place called Chiriton, could this be Tiverton, or Cheriton Fitzpaine where there were a number of Snells? There are also a few Samuels who have a father called John! If anyone can help on the placename or on Samuel before 1877 I would be very grateful,
