Have you seen the original parish register entry? It was (and still is) the norm for clergymen to get ahead of themselves and make up the register in advance of the wedding(s) on the day in question. It is not at all uncommon to see such entries crossed out if the nuptials failed to take place. Sometimes over enthusiastic modern day transcribers include such entries as if they had actually happened. There are other possibilities, such as banns being mistranscribed as marriages.
If this scenario applies to your couple, one can only speculate as to why the planned marriage did not take place. Perhaps the groom got cold feet and did a runner but got hauled back when it became more obvious that a child was imminent? Perhaps Edgar was a cad who refused to acknowledge that the expected baby was his and called off the marriage, only to relent after it was born?
