Hi All,
I have an ancestor (Isaac Cragg) who was sent to Carlisle Goal for 2 months (hard labour) after using nets to catch fish in the Derwent.
Does anyone know where Carlisle Goal was at the time and what the poaching laws were at the time?
The details from (Carlisle Journal - Saturday 17 December 1842):
At Cockermouth Petty Sessions held on Monday last, Isaac Cragg, a waller, was committed to hard labour in Carlisle gaol for two months, for having six salmon and two nets in his possession, in a field near the Fitz Mill, adjoining the river Derwent.
He was caught by the local magistrate in 1820 doing exactly the same thing.
Thank you,
David Cragg
