HAUGHAN -- Wallace Bruce, C.B.E., born November 29, 1905 Carlisle, Cumbria, England, who passed away on April 23, 1997. Predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Betty, November 18, 1996. Survived by daughters Hilary (Gerry), Jean (Vic); grandchildren, David (Sylvia), Peter (Monica), Karen, Sara (Rob) and Hilary. Great-grandchildren Alana, Alexander and Liam. Mr. Haughan worked with John Laing Ltd. from 1920 to 1952 in many locations in Britain. In 1953 he was chosen to lead a Laing Team of engineers, surveyors and architects to survey, plan and advise the Duke of Westminister's Grosvenor Estates and produce a feasability study for a new industrial estate located on Annacis Island. In April 1953 Laing formed a new company, Laing Canada Ltd. This was a civil engineering and building company with offices in Vancouver and Mr. Haughan became Chairman and President. In the next ten years, Grosvenor-Laing completed many major projects including large shopping centres such as Guildford Town Centre in Surrey, and Mayfair in Victoria. During his career Mr. Haughan was a member of the Board of Crown Zellerbach, Canada, Crown Zellerback International in San Francisco, General Insurance of Canada and Laing Parent Co. of London, England. In 1972 Mr. Haughan was honoured by the Queen and made a Commander of the British Empire. Also, in 1972, Mr. Haughan became a member of the Board of Governors for the proposed new Pearson College and later supervised the planning and building of the College. Mr. Haughan was a life member of the Border and Country Club of Carlisle, England, the Vancouver Club and past President of the Salvation Army and The Heart Foundation. Many thanks for the loving care given by all the staff of Crofton Manor Care Centre. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on May 15, 1997 at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 2490 West 37th Ave. In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
