LEIGH family in Macclesfield

I am looking for information on the Leigh family from Macclesfield. I have a number of pictures with houses and a local hotel that they visited often, one grave and one picture marked "Irish Cousins". All were born and from Macclesfield, however, I have found references to Stockton, Chapel en le Frith, Rainow and Knutsford.

William Leigh (b~1825) married Sarah Ann Dean (b~1828 - Rainow)
William and Sarah had two children:
1. William Leigh b. 1849
2. Jabez Leigh (10/22/1856 - 4/29/1888) married Lavinia Maurice Bayley (3/14/1858 - 5/29/1934)
Jabez and Lavinia had four children:
1. Wilfrid Alfred Leigh, Sr. (b. 8/19/1879) married Elizabeth Garside (b. 1884) both died in the U.S.
2. Ethel Marion Leigh (4/9/1878 - 6/18/1932)
3. Arthur Oscar Leigh (b. 12/16/1880 in Denton)
4. Mabel Lavinia Leigh (b. 7/14/1882)

Thanks,

Paul Jenkins
Shawsville, Virginia

I am searching for information about Agostino Granelli who lived at 18 Catherine Street, Macclesfield certainly in the year 1918, and probably before and after that as well. Agostino had a daughter Millieta. I know this because I have a copy of a postcard sent to them from his brother, my great grandfather Camillo Granelli, during World War 1. Agostino was likely born about 1880 in Santa Maria del Taro in Italy and his parents are Francisco Granelli and Maria de Lucchi. There may be a connection to the Granelli family who made ice cream. This is all I know. Can anyone please help me find out more?

Any ideas?
Many thanks
Brian

Hello,

I will be traveling to Dukinfield in September to visit the birthplace of my gr, gr, gr grandfather, James Gray Smith. He was the brother of Mary Smith Moffat who married a well known missionary and was the mother-in-law of Livingstone. I want to visit the Smith's birthplace, apparently a house still standing, near Plantation Farm. Any idea where Plantation Farm is located in Dukinfield? The house has a Blue Plaque because of Mary's connection to Robert Moffat & Livingstone.

Thank you very much,

Gail,

Bend, OR, USA

Marbury, Cheshire, England

I am looking for more information on the town of Marbury in Cheshire, England, where a number of generations of my Hallmarks lived (from approx. 1599-1742).

What I would like to know first of all, is an approximate time of founding. My earliest date in Marbury is 1599. I am also curious to know what the main industry of the town was, whether it tended to specialize in salt like most of the surrounding area or if it was known for any crafts, etc.

Any information that can be shared would be greatly appreciated in my search to learn more of my ancestors. Book recommendations are also taken.

If anyone knows the history of Church Minshull (mentioned in Domesday, my Hallmark line starts there in 1465) or Norbury (migration pt between Church Minshull and Marbury approx 1570-1599) as well, I would be also be appreciative to learn more about them.

This whole family move to Canada and I know a lot about their descendants.

But what of the other children born 1822-1827 and their descendants? And where did the first Mathew come from? There seem to be few Thornicrofts in Cheshire.

POTTS around Mobberley, Cheshire

THE ONLY POTTS I HAVE A RECORD OF IN THE AREA OF MOBBERLEY, IS AN EDWARD POTTS,OF MORLEY,WILMSLOW, DIED 1622, THEN NO MORE FOR 100 YEARS. I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF A PRISON OR EVEN A GAOL IN MOBBERLEY. I BELIEVE THERE IS A PRISON AT WILMSLOW, BUT I DONT KNOW ITS AGE. AS FOR THE POTTS IN USA
I HAVE HEARD SOMETHING ABOUT AN IRON BUSINESS OF SOME SORT IN THE FAMILY, BUT CANT REMEMBER THE WHICH BRANCH. I AM DESCENDED FROM WILLIAM HEALD WHO MARRIED ELIZABETH POTTS 1719, KENNETT, CHESTER CO, PENN, THE FATHER WAS JONAS POTTS.WITNESSES AT THE CEREMONY INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING POTTS; THOMAS, MARY,JONATHAN,HANNAH, JONAS,JOHN,THOMAS,DAVID,MARY & REES.
AT THIS SAME CEREMONY (QUAKER) RACHEL POTTS,SISTER OF ELIZ,
MARRIED JOSEPH BURSON.
AS FOR THOMAS POTTS BEING IMPRISIONED FOR HIS QUAKER BELIEFS
IN 1666 IN MOBERRLEY, I FIND THAT A BIT MUCH, AS THE AREA AROUND MOBBERLEY,MORLEY,WILMSLOW, WAS PRETTY THICK WITH THEM. MORE THAN LIKELY HE WAS FINED FOR NON-ATTENDANCE AT THE ESTABLISHED CHURCH WHICH WAS QUITE COMMON.
i HAVE LOTS MORE.
I am looking for any info pertaining to Mary LOCKETT and/or family believed to have been in Cheshire in 1800s. Mary married Alexander CALLOW, said to be from Stockport. They
had a son Nathaniel, born 2 Aug, 1841. Nathaniel married Mary Colyer LANG (Holme area?) and ended up in the Fall River, Mass. area of USA. They had a daughter Alice Anne CALLOW. Mary Colyer's parents were William LANG(Blackburn area?), and Ann HILTON(Lancashire area?). Will appreciate help with LOCKETT or any ties to the folks listed.

My wife's 2 x gt grandmother, Mary Burgess (nee Slater) had a son Edward in the workhouse in 1855/1856.

We wonder how long she was in the workhouse & whether her husband, Samuel was in there too. Do you know if any records exist other than the census?

Know they were home in 1851 with a daughter Sarah but by 1861 census, Mary with both children is living in Middlewich with no Samuel but another Burgess, this time a lodger called James. Just trying to find out what happened in those 10 years.

According to the 1871 Census my great granduncle had a public house called the 'Ermine Vaults', at 12 Frodsham Street, Chester. I would be very interested if anyone knows anything about this Public House. I have done some research but have found no record of this Pub even though the other Pubs on the same census are mentioned ie 'Raglan', 'City Arms'. I have traced another Pub called, 'The Ermine' but I don't think that is the same one as it appears that one was in Hoole Road, Chester.

Any help would be appreciated.

James was 52years old, his wife Hannah was 51 years old. Listed are two children Ann age 20 and William age 24.
I am trying to connect Ann to a Charles Hillman of Liverpool. They came to America in 1853, and were married in Woodford County, Illinois. They had three daughters, Ellen A., Ada Sachrell, and Ida Mae.

Moses KEY (or possibly KAY) born in Cheshire, England in 1675

I'm searching for any information anybody can provide on one Moses Key, or perhaps spelled Kay, who was born in Cheshire, England in 1675. I know all of the usual information concerning his coming to America and life in the states, but seeking any background information on his parents and their country of origin.

He came to Pennsylvania in 1700 and was a very active Quaker. He was evidently a very active Quaker in Cheshire as well, considering he brought with him a letter of introduction to the Friends in PA from the society in Cheshire.

My family believes that Moses Key is our ancestor and I have participated in the ydna project for the Key family. I've matched with two McKays (Mackay) with origins in Scotland and a Kee. Interested in making connections with any Key folks in the UK or Scotland who possibly descend back to Moses Key's Cheshire family.

Would appreciate any help at all! Feel free to email me at jutkey@gmail.com.

Blessings!

Yesterday I received the Marriage Certificate of my 4 x Great Grandparents James Stoddard and Mary Snelson, they were married in the parish of Prestbury, Chester in 1838. It states that James lived in Chelford and was a Labourer at the time of his marriage it doesn't give his aged but says 'of full age, although I think that he was born in around 1808. Mary Snelson was a Spinster of full age living in Withington, I think that she was born in 1806.

The Father of James was Joseph Stoddard, a Stonemason, and Mary's father was called William Snelson, a Labourer.

The witnesses were Edward Snelson and Hannah Lea, and the clergyman that officiated over the wedding was called Frederick Fryer (curate).

If anybody has any information on any of these names or could visit the parish churches in Cheshire for me, please contact me, your help would be greatly appreciated!

Regards

Lisa

STODDARD Family in Cheshire

Hi, my name is Lisa Stoddard and I have been researching my family
> history now for about 6 years and have come to a dead end in respect
> of not being able go to the birthplace of my ancestors because I am
> disabled.
> >
>
> I am interested in finding any information about JOSEPH STODDARD who I
> think was born in MERE, CHESHIRE. I don't know what year he was born
> but his son JAMES was born in 1808.
>
> On JAMES STODDARD's marriage certificate to MARY SNELSON in February
> 1838, JOSEPH's profession is stated as Stonemason and living in
> CHELFORD. I also think he may be buried in ROSTHERNE CEMETARY.
>
> If anyone can find any information on this person I would be truly
> grateful.
>
>
> Thankyou
>
> Lisa x
>
I have recently found a photograph of my grandfather, other patients and staff from when he was in the above in about 1916 after being injured during WW1. Does anyone know where the records from this hospital are and/or are they accessible? His name was Thomas Frederick Larkham (Dorsetshire Regiment)and I do know from his medal record that he was eventually discharged from the hospital and joined the Labour Corps.
Thanks
Ray Harris

It seems he was involved in a poaching incident, in which a certain John Eadley shot at a certain T Jackson.

In Australia he was eventually made free, married a young girl from Limerick (Susannah Casey), and had his first child, Martha Jane Oaks, only to be convicted again in Burrowa and sent to Norfolk Island, and then Van Diemans Land. He came back to NSW, had some more family and died in the Murringo area.

Luckily, the Tasmanian convict records give the names of family members back in England: parents Thomas and Elizabeth, and siblings William, Thomas, Mary, Esther and Charlotte.

George would have been born about 1805.

Do his family members' names ring any bells?

Her parents were Henry Robinson and Sarah.

I can only find two marriages for a Henry Robinson and Sarah both dated 31 December 1804 and both to a Sarah Etchells, one in Macclesfield and one in Prestbury. Would anyone know if they are one and the same marriage?

Thanks
Lesley

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help with this one.

A marriage took place at Whitegate, Cheshire, England on 21st April 1813 between Joseph Cookson and Mary Davies.

As the marriage certificate makes no mention of who the parents are and I have two Joseph Cooksons, either of which could possibly fit the bill, I am stuck.

Possibility No 1. Joseph Cookson born in Over Cheshire c.1793. He was a saltboiler by trade. Wife Mary.

Possibility No 2. Joseph Cookson ch. January 1792 in Tarvin Cheshire, died 11th, February 1822 Tarvin. He was a farmer. Wife Mary.

Any feedback at all would be more than welcome.

Regards,

Alan Cookson.

Hi,

I seem to be at a dead end, and I am hoping someone here can shed some light on the situation. Elizabeth Chaplow was born early 1855 to William Chaplow and Mary Rowland. She lived in Chester, and in 1873 married William Speed. Here is my problem by 1881 she is in Brooklyn, New York, married to a Mr. Leigh, and has two children. I cannot figure out what happened those 8 years. I can't find a death certificate for William Speed. I cannot find her immigration papers. I cannot find another marriage, or his death certificate. Just to finish the story Mr. Leigh is dead about 1885, and in 1887 she remarried Thomas Miller. Anything that can help me with this situation would be most appreciated.
