(BDM VIC 6490) Cause of death: heart disease. Copy of death certificate held. His body was interred in White Hills Cem., Bendigo, Vic. He married Betty (Elizabeth) COAKLOW (COKELOW) in Middlewich, Cheshire, UK, January 26, 1811. Betty was born in Spurstow, Cheshire, UK circa 1788. POB according to Death Certificate. Betty was the daughter of John COAKLOW (COKELOW, COCLOUGH) and Sarah STANWAY. Betty died November 30, 1884 in Strathfieldsaye, 97 yrs, at 96 years of age. (BDM VIC 14307) Maiden name noted as COSCLOUGH. Copy of death certificate held. Her body was interred 1884 in White Hills Cem., [Bendigo], Vic.. She was christened in Middlewich, Cheshire, UK, December 28, 1788. Betty immigrated, 1854. Destination: Melbourne, Victoria. The ship was the 'Macclesfield', arriving10 Jan 1855.

He married twice. He married Martha MASSEY in Manchester Cathedral, by Banns, November 30, 1835. (Cert. 2976) Officiating minister, Henry Fielding. The witnesses were Alice BARLOW and Thomas PARRY. Martha was born in Bolton, Lancashire, UK November 20, 1817. Martha was the daughter of James MASSEY and Bridget PAINE. Martha died May 14, 1874 in Sandhurst, Vic, at 56 years of age. (BDM VIC 6189) Age given as 58 yrs. Her body was interred in White Hills Cemetery, Bendigo, VIC. Martha immigrated, February 8, 1840. Destination: Sydney. The ship the 'Arkwright', arr. Sydney, NSW.

He married Catherine PASCOE in Sandhurst, Vic, Cert., November 26, 1874. Previously Mrs. URAND and Mrs. NESBIT. Catherine was born January 16, 1833. She married Richard William URAND. Catherine died September 5, 1921 in Bendigo, at 88 years of age. (BDM VIC 8512) Her body was interred in Bendigo Cemetery.

William ASHLEY and Martha MASSEY had the following children:

i. Elizabeth3 ASHLEY was born in UK?. An Elizabeth ASHLEY was born to a William ASHLEY and Martha, and christened on 12 July 1837 at Cann Lane and Ettingshall Road Wesleyan Church, Bilston, Staffordshire. Our Elizabeth was supposedly left in England with her grandparents, and an Elizabeth did come out with them on the 'Macclesfield'. Elizabeth died after 1897. Possibly illegitimate daughter of William, named in father's will (made 1897) as Mrs. SMITH and as his natural daughter. In this will she is listed as living at Atherton Quay, Warrington, UK. She married ? SMITH who died before 1898.
ii. Emma ASHLEY.
iii. Henry ASHLEY was born in Sandhurst 1855. (BDM Victoria 8707) He married Margaret Ellen WILLIS in Sandhurst, June 4, 1882. (BDM Victoria 268) Believe this marriage to be our Henry.
iv. Sarah Jane ASHLEY was born circa 1840.
v. William ASHLEY was born July 23, 1842.
vi. James ASHLEY was born 1844.
vii. Thomas ASHLEY was born 1846. Thomas died April 15, 1902 at 55 years of age. Age given as 53 yrs. His body was interred in White Hills Cemetery, Bendigo.
He was christened in Sydney, NSW, 1846. (380 Vol.55)
viii. John ASHLEY was born 1849.
ix. Joseph ASHLEY was born July 2, 1851.
x. Matthew ASHLEY was born July 2, 1851.
