Hi Jaide
I can find Violet PAYNE in 1901 as an adopted daughter living in Congleton, born in Milton, Staffordshire (that is in Stoke on Trent). However I can't see her in 1911 under PAYNE or BARTLAM. Could you give the references please? Was she still with the CARTLEDGE family?
The most likely explanation for an adopted child is that she was illegitimate, which could mean that Frederick BARTLAM is a fiction. What was his occupation on Violet's marriage, or was he just marked as deceased?
I can't find Violet's birth under either name. Although she gave her age as 22 when she married in 1920, she was only 1 in the 1901 census. She may have fibbed as she could have been under the age of consent.
Does the information about her being adopted by the Cartlidges come directly from the family, handed down the generations? Or does it just come from the census?
