I could really use some help locating some relatives born in Sandhurst in the 1870/80's. They are shown on the 81 census as living at the New Married Quarters in Sandhurst berks but after that I seem to have lost them.

After my ggg grandmother (Clementina) died in the mid 90's my ggg grandfather (John Elliott) returned to Durham in search of work and the children were scattered. My gg grandmother Daisy Clementina Eleanor Elliot (1883) was working in London when she married my gg grandad and I have managed to trace one of her siblings, Margaret (1885) to a nearby workhouse, and also her eldest sister Jane. I have been unable to find Daisy's sister Eliza Ellen Elliott born 1872, Georgina Kate Elliott 1875 (shown as Kate on 81 census) Florence Elliott born 1876 and brother George Edward Elliot born 1881. I would be very grateful for any information which I can pass on to their niece who is now in her mid 80's,, and make an old lady very happy.

I understand from other sources that he died in Stoke Poges 'in the 1970s' so he was in the same area, but I cannot find this on the deaths register.

Does anyone have any suggestions of other places to look, or even recognise the name?

Regards,

Julian
Hi all, I have a Richard POVEY bapt 03/10/1762 in Speen, Berkshire. My query is did he marry Martha ? and have James 1793,Richard b1796, Amy 1801, Sarah 1803, William 1809, Thomas 1811, and possibly a Martha and a John, some where along the way. Or did my Richard marry a Mary ? and have a Richard 1796 and a Mary 1798. Or is this the same couple as there is certainly enough time for Mary to be born between James and Amy. All children born in Speen, Berkshire. My Richard b 1796 went on to marry Grace COX bapt 18/09/1803 from Aldbourne, Wiltshire. Daughter of William and Hannah COX. Thank you all for reading this and any help would be great. Katie

BULL INN formerly the PAPAL BULL in BISHAM

Some ancestors of mine used to run the Bull Inn in Bisham (eg Thomas Cook, seen as victuallar at the Bull in 1861, and at some stage his son, James Cook). I am told that the inn was once known a the Papal Bull and has stood in one form or another for 700 years.

Does anyone have any information on the Bull please? And does anyone know why it first held the name of the Papal Bull? I know what one is, but don't know what bull this inn was named after; what is the relevance to Bisham?

If anyone could advise or could tell me any more about how I might find out about the Bull (and possibly my ancestors) without visiting it, which sadly I'm unable to do, I'd be very grateful. Thank you.

Hi,
I am looking for information concerning Sarah's marriage to William Indge/Inge/Judge/Hinge born in Wiltshire circa 1826.
I believe that she may have had a daughter, Mary Ann Haines whose birth was registered in Faringdon in September 1841 --there is no father's name given on the IGI entry. On the 1851 census she is shown as being 28 and married to William Hinge, living in Coxwell St., Gt Faringdon with Mary Ann 9, John 6 both born Buckland, Edwin 4 born Highworth Wilts, and Thomas 2 born Faringdon. She and William eventually had 9 children that I am aware of -- the 4 I have mentioned and Ellen, Henry, Sarah, William and Tilly(Matilda)all born in Farigdon and registered under Inge.
I assumed that they were married by the time that John's birth was registered in Faringdon in Sep 1844 under the name Indge but I have been unable to find the marriage registration under Haynes/Haines on the indexes despite looking for several years either side of this date. Any help in tracking down the marriage information would be much appreciated -- I am trying to confirm who William's father was.
Thanks,
Marilyn

Children of John & Catharine GILLETT (GILLAT) in Berkshire

John Gillat married Cath Alexander at Swyncombe, Oxfordshire, 21/11/1730. Thereafter there does not seem to be any mention of them, or any family they may have had, in Oxon other than possibly the burial of John at Henley St. Mary, Oxon, in 1759.
I am wondering whether they might have "migrated" to Berkshire and had family there. If anyone can provide any information I would be very appreciative.
Alan Gillett

Abingdon Parish Records 1835

I've long had a record for the following marriage:

James Wake and Elizabeth Trinder 7 Sep 1835 Abingdon, Berks.

Due to a computer crash I'm forced to re-find a lot of data. I cannot find this marriage on the OFHS CD (OXF-AB01) but it appears as an Extracted Record on the IGI.

The odd thing about the IGI entry (the whole batch in fact) is that it just says Abingdon, no mention of which church.

Does anyone have access to the fiche and can confirm this record?

Hello everyone, I have a query and hope someone maybe able to help or put me in the right direction. My query is that I have a Florence Selina Gee b 1887 Reading Berkshire I know she got married Sept qtr 1910 to a ? Davis, What i am looking for is his first name, i did find a couple of possibilities, a John Davis b 1881 but since found out it isn't him and I was told by a family member his name was Arthur b about 1887, but have been told he's not the one either. So if someone can put me in the right direction it would be appreciated, I live in Canada so its not easy for me to go to the BRO to look at the records, so if someone can help that would be great and thank you in advance
Faith

Ambrose HEDGES b. c1806 Faringdon

Good evening,

This one has me stumped ! He was married in Faringdon (1827)
worked all his life in Faringdon and died in Faringdon (1862), but cannot find trace of his birth and/or baptism anywhere, or the names of his parents. He is mentioned in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census returns as successively 35, 45, and 55 "born in Faringdon".

There are 3 HEDGES families in Faringdon, and circumstantial evidence could connect him to any one of them. The Berkshire Records Office tell me that between 1798 and 1812 on the original Parish registers they can't find him.

Can anyone throw any light on the subject please ?!!

This line then takes me back to Peeter Headache bc1565 of Pangbourne.

The variation in the surname is quite outstanding and reminds me of Kevin Herridge's piece of work 'Oh What a Headache!'

Any help greatly appreciated!

Dick
Hello

I hope that you can help me.

I have been unable to locate the marriage details of my 2 x G Grandparents and the baptism records of their 2 eldest children.

My 2 x G Grandparents are EDWARD MILTON born 1807 Marylebone Middx and JANE FORRESTER born 1809 Wellington Shropshire.

According to the 1841 census of Chelsea, their 2 eldest daughters were MARY (or HANNAH MARY) born c1837 Windsor and JANE born 1838 also Windsor. I assume therefore that Edward and Jame were married somewhere between 1830 and 1836.

Edward was a master tailor and I have assumed that he served his apprenticeship in Windsor. This fits in with some other members of the family being military tailors.

Could you please therefore point me in the direction of someone who could look this info up for me when they next visit the Berkshire Records Office. I would be happy to pay any copying and postage costs.

Many thanks and a Merry Christmas to you

Best wishes

Alison Smith nee Milton

miltonalison@aol.com

I thought she was the daughter of Andrew & Eleanor Panton until I saw this reference at familysearch.org:
****************************************
MARY ANN PANTON Christening: 03 NOV 1844 Saint Mary, Reading, Berkshire
Parents: Father: WILLIAM PANTON
Mother: MARY ANN
****************************************
I cannot locate this Parish record myself though. Also I cannot find any census data on William Panton & Mary Ann with a daughter Mary Ann (although I do find 1851 census data for a Mary Anne Panton as a daughter of Andrew & Eleanor).
I also cannot find Marriage information for Mary Anne Panton and Charles Beacham.

COOK and PIERSEY family , Bisham and Winkfield

Are there any descendants out there from the COOK family of Bisham, who also branched out to Winkfield please? I can go as far back as Barnet and Mary Cook, (Barnet was born circa 1750-52), and there were still Cooks in Bisham in the early 1900's - and probbly still are as there were a lot of them over the years!

It is possible that Barnet's wife, mary, was named Piersey prior to their marriage. If anyone could confirm this for me or is related please get in touch. Thank you.

Looking for parents of Martha Dance. I found an IGI marriage record for her marriage to William Hopkins on 08 November 1846 in Reading, Saint Giles Parish, Berkshire, England. This record lists her father as Richard Dance. The census records for Martha list her birth as being in Swallowfield, Berkshire. I could not find a Christening record for Martha Dance in Swallowfield.

There is an Ann Dance Christening record 08 AUG 1819 Swallowfield, Berkshire, England. It lists her father as Richard Dance and her mother as Martha. Ann Dance married Charles Paice on 29 June 1845 Saint Giles, Reading, Berkshire, England. Her father was listed as Richard Dance

In Both the census records I find that Martha Hopkins and Ann Paice were born in Swallowfield.

Does anyone have information on this family, or suggestions where I could look next? Your help is most appreciated.
Maggie
