John Welch (or Welsh), was in 1857 living in Cornwall, working as a Rag Dealer. (Information from BDM birth certificate of his daughter Sarah.) At the 1861 Census he was recorded as a Marine Stores Dealer, born Buckingham, Buckinghamshire, aged 37 (born 1824). His wife Mary Ann was 40. (Previously widowed Mrs Smitheram nee ?)

Their daughter Sarah Welch was born at Camborne in Cornwall, 28 Aug 1857. By 1871 (after the death of her parents?) Sarah was living with her older brother’s family and using their surname. Sarah emigrated to New Zealand in 1877, following her brother.
