I did think it could be another Rumrill also but the age is right and I don't think he had children. I don't know why but I am fascinated by him I guess because it's a mystery what happened to him. I'm going to keep trying to find out though. Thank you for the reply.

Could very well be. I believe that Simeon and Clement worked their way over on a fishing boat from the Channel Islands. However the only records from Salem recorded his surname as Rumrill. There seems to have been an influx of Huegenots from the Channel Islands named Romeril or Romerril in the seventeenth century who settled in New England or the Canadian Maritimes so it could also be another Clement. I don't believe that we will ever know for sure.

Just noticed your message on Mar. 16, 2013. I am an ancestor of the second Simon also. I was interested in what you said about Clement Rumrill. I knew he fought in the King Phillips' War and then his tracks went cold. I did find some information that a Clement Rummerill was a fisherman in Portsmouth, NH and married a Rebecca(Brookings) Pommery on Sept. 6, 1687 and died before 1689. I wonder if this is the same Clement Rumrill who was Simon the first's brother. Have you heard of this and do you have any updates?

Hello Marilyn,
My grandmother was a le Couilliard and I have researched the family since ca 2000. Our common ancestor was Michel Thomas le Couilliard born ca 1780, who married Elizabeth Picot in St Martin, Jersey on 15.11.1806. He was said to be "etranger" (stranger) of St Lo d' Hurville (sic) - should read d'Ourville. This is in the Manche department of Normandy and is near the coastal port of Portbail. I have been a member of the Genealogical Society of Manche and have visited Normandy a number of times to try and further my research. However Michel Thomas was born prior to the Revolution and the introduction of Civil registration in France and many of the church records were lost during the war. To date I have not been able to carry the line back any further. The name (le) Cou(i)lliard is fairly common in Normandy .
Hope this helps!
Regards
Janet
I think most Rumrills are descended from John and Abigail Chandler Rumrill having had 10 children of which Nehemiah was number 4. Nehemiah and Alice Parsons had 11, Margaret being # 11. John and Abigail's first son John married Sarah Bliss - they had 9. Bliss is another aparrently Huguenot name from Enfield and Abigail (#2) married Samuel Bliss.

Thank you for your post. It provided me with new information about the early Rumrills. I am descended from John Rumrill the brother of your Simon(I believe)who married Abigail Chandler. The last Rumrill name in my tree is Margaret, the daughter of Nehemiah Rumrill and Alice Parsons. Margaret married Solomon Ferre in Springfield in 1805. He was also a Huguenot descendant from Charles Ferry whose family settled in Canterbury and then London after they left France. I have number of ancestors who were in Enfield including the Chandlers, Collins, Rev. Adams. Thank you again.
Happened to run across your messqage. Simeon and Clement Romeril, middle sons of Thomas and Susanne Coutanch Romeril of ST. Johns, CI, came to Salem MA in the Fall of 1675. It appears that they worked their way over on a fishing boat. Salem, had a militia law requiring all able bodied men between 16 and 60 to join the militia. Simeon was 19. Clement 21. Clement was impressed into the Mass Bay Colony miltia in Dec. 1675 and marched off to fight the Indians in Feb 1676 during King Phillips' War. He was never heard from again. By Dec. 1675 both boys were named Rumrill. The Romerils were Hugueonots and there were several Huguenot families in Salem so they were probably taken in by one. In 1679-1680, Simeon migrated to Enfield with others from Salem and married Sarah Fairman. They had 4 boys and one girl but the first Simon died shortly after birth. The second Simon was my ancestor.

Marilyn.,

Yes my mother is Elizabeth Falle (nee Le Couilliard) who you say you communicated with in the 90s. Her great great grandfather was the George Le Couiliard (1834 - 1897) you are talking about. He married Sophie de Gruchy(1840 - 1929). They lived and worked the farm at La Carriere, Longueville, Grouville, a property which is now owned by my mother. Unfortunately, neither myself or my mother have been able to find out much about George, apart from the fact that he was born in St.Lawrence and we believe his father was also called George, who we think married a Ann Lucas (nee Le Brun), who was born in either 1807 or 1809. We cannot seem to find anything else about George Jnr or indeed George Snr or his wife Ann, but i suspect George Snr was born in Normandy. If you can find any further traces please let me know...
Thankyou
Regards
Helier Falle

Following on from 'jersey1234's post, in the 1851 census there is a George Cuillard (probably Couillard phonetically) age 16, a ship(w)right, born Jersey living as a son-in-law with a Lucas family in La Vingtaine des Pigneaux, St. Saviour (district 4) which is an area to the west of St. Martin's main road before Maufant today (no particular address given). There are some trees on Ancestry who give George's mother as Ann Lucas?

At the time of the 1841 census George LE COUILLIARD, his mother and possible baby sister appear to have been living in St Saviour (district 2, page 7). Nancy COULLARD (sic) aged 31? a charwoman, George 6 and Ann 1 make up one household in a multi-household house. They are all listed as Jersey born.
I don't have an Ancestry subscription so cannot check this transcription of the census page.

Hi Marilyn
I haven't found a connection between my Le Couillards and your George Le Couilliard as yet. I believe it is a fairly common name in nearby Normandy, France (Basse Normande) from where my Jean F.F. Le Couillard appears to have been born.
My french isn't good enough to explore the French records either so will have to wait until someone issues something in English.
I am Jersey born - but now live in Yorkshire, England - so I do know the areas of Jersey to which you refer. St. Lawrence and Grouville are actually separate Parishes in Jersey (and not even linked by boundaries) so maybe George moved to that area, or was it Sophie de Gruchy who was born in Grouville. Of course, Jersey is not very big (certainly compared to Australia or even England)!! but families in the early part of the 1800's tended to stay in the same locality, especially if they were farmers, with the property handed down through the family. I suspect Miladi Farm is no longer there as I do know that a lot of housing was built in the Miladi area of St. Saviour.

Do you have access to the Census records for Jersey? Do any of them say where George was born? I'll have a look as well as I have a subscription to Ancestry UK (not worldwide) and see if I can find any clues.

Let me know if I can be of any help with place names in Jersey.
Regards
Jane Ross

Laura Jane Baker was born 25/8/1866 in St Helier. Her parents were John Helier Baker and Jane Laffoley.

John Helier Baker and Jane Laffoley married in St Saviour's parish church on 10/10/1863. His father was Henry Baker, a seaman and hers was John Lafolley, a shoemaker.

1861
Name Age
John Laffolley 56 - Shoemaker
Nancy (Ann) Laffolley 54 - maiden name de Quetteville
Jane Laffolley 20
Alice M J Baker 5

Alice is a bit of a puzzle as I don't think she's Jane's daughter but there must be a family connection to the Bakers as she is listed as Granddaughter. No, I've sorted her now, Jane has a sister Ann, born 1830 who married a Thomas Baker, these are Alice's parents.

Lafolley baptisms
25 04 1830 Anne daughter of Jean and Anne de Quetteville
31 01 1841 Jane daughter of Jean and Nancy de Quetteville

However I cannot make a connection between Thomas' father, also Thomas born 1804 Ireland and John Helier's father Henry 1808 Dorset, perhaps it's just a coincidence that both sisters married men called Baker.

Jane or Jeanne Hooper was my great-grandmother. She and her husband John Valpy were parents to my grandfather, also John, who was their eldest child and who became the Rector of Grouville for something like 30 years. Thomas John Wilbur Hooper was born in Grouville in 1850, son of Thomas Hooper and Marie Ann Valpy. Jeanne was his sister so he is my great-great uncle. Many of the Christian names are Anglicised in modern trees but were French spelling originally. My grandfather had made a family tree of a limited nature and he shows his mother's name as Jeanne, not Jane. Sacha Hubbard (née Sandra Jane Hooper Valpy, Jersey 1946)

Peter Le Gros Bisson and Laura Jane Baker married in St Saviour's Parish Church Jersey on the 13th of April 1892. The entry in the register names his father as Nicholas Le Gros Bisson, Carpenter, as per my earlier post and hers as John Helier Baker, a Master Mariner. Peter's occupation is also Mariner.

One of the witnesses was Lilian Mary Baker (the other was also a Baker but the first name was illegilble). In 1891 Laura Baker is living with her uncle, William Baker and his family including her cousin Lilian.

Name Age
William F Baker 50
Mary J Baker 47
Lilian Baker 19
Ida C Baker 17
Laura T Baker 24 (Laura J on the image)

She is with the same family in 1881 but although I can find her father John H from 1841 to 1861 I cannot find either of them in 1871. The only likely one (transcribed as Lana J)has a brother John H, which seems to fit, but their mother is listed as Unmarried however this could be a mistake and it's not unlikely that the father was away at sea. I'll have to find Laura's birth to check her parents but that will be a job for next week.

John Helier Baker was born in the parish of Grouville, his father was Henry Baker, born 1805 in Dorset and his mother was Mary Amy born c1815 in Grouville. Amy is a very common name here but I can trace her line back to about 1750 - her father was also Helier which helps.

Hope this is useful for you.

Alors???

John Le Garignon

Gatineau (Québec), Canada
SGO Adh. 1828
CG22 Adh. 3757
This looks like Peter Le Gros Bisson on the 1871,making his parents Nicolas Le Gros Bisson and Jane Le Couteur.

Name Age
Nicolas Le Gros Brison 58
Jane D Leconteur 48
Elizabeth J Le Gros Bisson 9
Philip Le Gros Bisson 7
Peter J Le Gros Bisson 4
Anna Le Hamen 12

If you go to 1881 Peter is serving on the ship Exact with his much older brother Nicolas as Captain. Nicolas can be found with his parents in 1851, other siblings are John 1848, Jane 1854, Eliza 1857, Elizabeth 1862 and Philip 1864.

I will need to consult the marriage indexes to see if Peter and Laura married in Jersey, which can't be done until later next week.

Hello All,
I'm looking for information about my grandmother's second husband's family Legros Bisson.
Her husband was William Francis Legros Bisson born 19 Jun 1894 in Edge Hill (Liverpool) Lancashire.
His parents are given as Peter Legros Bisson and Laura Jane.

According to the 1901 census, Laura Jane was born ~1868 in St. Heliers, Jersey and the 1891 census Peter was born ~ 1866 in St. Peters, Jersey. Peter is not listed in the 1901 census and there is a death on FreeBMD for Peter Bisson in the Mar. qtr of 1899 in Liverpool.

I would really appreciate any help I can get with birth dates, parents and marriage date.

Thanks, Paul Wingert

Hi Sharyn.
My name is Jim Burke and I was a neighbour of yours when your Dad and Mum and family came to Clonmel in Co. Tipperary, Ireland in the late fifties and early sixties. Your Dad was the best Australian jockey to ever come to Ireland. I lived 3 houses away from you in Ard Na Greine, Clonmel and I have fond memories of playing with you and your sisters together with my cousins. As luck would have it our two children are now working in Melbourne. My son is a doctor working in Werribbee and my daughter is a trainee lawyer working in the CBD district of Melbourne. We visit them regularly and are in Melbourne for Xmas. I only learned , with sadness, today that your famous dad had passed away in 2008. We were discussing Black Caviar and comparing him to Frankel when your Dad's name came up. I hope you and your sisters are enjoying life and that you enjoyed your stay in Ireland which we would argue is the home of horse racing. Happy Xmas and many of them.

Have spoken to my friend Carol Medder in Jersey who seems to be one of the people you may be interested in. If you are on Face book you can contact her. She goes under the name of Caz Medder.

https://www.facebook.com/caz.medder?fref=ts

I am sure she will be able to help you more. Use my name Maleka and she will probably be ok .

Best wishes
