My ancestors James Robert and Marie Brouard were born in Guernseye about 1806-1809. They left Guernsey before 1837 and settled in 'Lower Canada' and later in Gaspe, Quebec. They had sic children. Their daughter Mary (Marie-Anne) was born in 1837 in 'Lower Canada' and married Louis Blanchette in Grande Grave, June 2, 18587. Their son James-John married Catherine Whelan in Grande Grave, October 13, 1857. Four children were born in Gaspe (1844-1859): Francis, Margaret, Louisa, and Elisa.

Could there be any connection with the Roberts you know in Eastern Quebec?

Thanks for responding to my query. I also have quite a few Roberts from the Gaspe. I really think my Roberts were in NB as far back as late 1700s at least in the 1861 census they stated that their parents were born in NB. Interestingly, they were shown as French, of English origin and
belonging to the Church of England which would all fit in very nicely if they were from the Channel Islands.
The first record I have of the Roberts in Kent Co., NB is a wedding in the 1840s and I don't know yet where they were before settling in Kent Co.

There were Channel Islands families brought to northern NB and the Gaspe region by the Charles Robin Company. Are you familiar with this? I'm looking for someone who has any of the following books, especially the first one:

1. Here is another background book which will be valuable to the researcher who has an ancestor who worked for the Charles Robin Co. Without a doubt this company was the most influential in bringing Jerseymen and their families to

settle on the Gaspé coast of Quebec and in Northern New Brunswick. There is a

good index, an excellent bibliography and a family tree of Raulin Robin and

descendants. http://Fox.nstn.ca:80/~nstn1528/booklist.htm

2.The Quiet Adventurers in Canada - Marion Turk. Until this work not much had been written
about the roles the sons and daughters of the Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and
Sark) played in Canadian history. This book is a genealogical dictionary of these early settlers. This
printing is a reprint of the 1979 edition which includes corrections and additions. (1979) reprint,
589 pp., maps, illus., bibl., index, paper, $46.00 #ZT867

3. The Quiet Adventurers in North America - Marion G. Turk. The Channel Islands, primarily
Guernsey and Jersey, contributed greatly to the influx of immigrants to the American colonies and
the young United States. The bulk of this work is a genealogical dictionary which identifies
thousands of known (or probable) Channel Island immigrants to America, and some of their
descendants. One section gives brief sketches of well-known Americans who had Island roots.
This printing is a reprint of the 1984 edition with the addition of six pages of corrections and
additions. (1984) reprint, 724 pp., 1 vol. in 2, illus., paper, $54.00 #ZT864

Do you have the info on the other Roberts who were in the Gaspe region around this time and from the Channel Islands? If not, and you want it, let me know. I'll keep your response on file until I get more information.
Thanks again,
Elaine Murphy

my great grandmother was a Robert, she was born here in Jersey, and both her parents were Roberts! They were actually first cousins. I do have some information about my Robert ancestors, and as it is quite a large family, it is possible some went to Gaspe, especially as my great grandmother's husband, Charles Le Cocq was a sailor who travelled extensively, including Gaspe. I have a ltter written to him from Gaspe from A man named John De Jersey.
Pls contact me if you think I could be of any help.
Julie.

Since my last posting I have uncovered a James & Mary Roberts born c1790 in PEI. I believe this is the same James who went to the Gaspe in 1816 and a few years later to NB. He may have already had relatives in the Gaspe at that time. There may be a connection to Peter & Margaret Roberts who were in PEI in the early 1800s. If this is so then that puts their arrival in Canada somewhere prior to 1790.
Do you have the same christian names among your ancestors?
Peter, James, John, Ephraim, Benjamin, Margaret, Mary Anne, Caroline, Elizabeth, William, George.

I believe my father's father, Harold Charles Robert was born in St Peterport c 1889 and joined the navy. He married Mary Hogan, c 1916. My Father, Harold George Robert was born 1917 and his brother Peter c 1922. I understand my great grandmother's name was Leah. Do you have any information on any relatives still living on Guernsey, or any other information about this particular line of Roberts? Thanks

My. Family Name is Roberts. We hail from Boston Massachusetts, however we find that my 4th great grand father is Robert Roberts (probably born in Charleston,SC). He ended up in Massachusetts in 1805 after being abroad (Europe). He married in 1805 a women named Dorothy Hall of Salem Mass, her dad was the founder of the African American Meeting house in Massachusetts.

Dorothy died in 1813 (Jan), he then married my grandmother - Sarah Easton Roberts August 1813, they had twelve children:
James Eaton
Benjamin Franklin
Mary Easton
Thomas Amory
John Harris
Timothy
Susan Tyler
Sarah Ann
Mary Annette
Elizabeth Augusta
Susanah Rhueammni
William Wilberforce

Some of the names are the same or similar, my research has proven that many people living in New England would venture to Canada.

I am related to Benjamin FRankllin Roberts who is well known for his bringing a suite against the city of Boston from preventing his daughter from receiveing an education in a school that was for whites, this case was later refered to in the "Plessy Ferguson" case (separate but equal).

Benjamin was an abolitionist (very militant) as was his father. His father Robert Roberts wrote a book in 1827 called "The House Servant's Directory" which is still being published today. It is said he is one of the first black americans to have a book published.

Benjamin had a son Charles who married Helen Lenox, they had four boys: Walter, Charles, William and Frank, then there was Helen who lived until she was (1) year old, William is my great grandfather who had several children one of which was my grandmother.

I do not know if this is helpful. If this helps and there is a connection, contact me at Negril95@aol.com or Lena.Reddick@ps.net
