Thomas Stewart Hincks , attached to the Ceylon Auxiliary Pioneer Battalion ,"died on active service" 2nd Nov 1943 . He was buried in Trincomalee War Cemetery so presumably this was in Ceylon. I am not aware of any action in Ceylon around that date but am trying to find out how he died. Any ideas?

Hi Lisa, I have had lots of info re: the White family in NZ and v. interesting it is too. Firstly, Dutch drives from Deutsche, since they were a Germanic race. I have a marvellous book called Tombstones & Monuments which gives much info. I shall look it up again. In fact, my German ancestor Gaulaterus
Schneider from Hesse Cassel came during the Dutch colonial period of Ceylon/S.Lanka and then served Britain who took over from the Dutch.Folk who were in various regiments i.e Luxembourg etc were in the service of the VOC Dutch East India Co.Some were French etc. As you may know the White you are descended from was the Dr Abraham White who died young when his children were looked after by the very prolific Layard family. All this in the above book which you may already know.My own gt grandma was Evelyn White whose grandfather, Joseph White was a silk weaver and her father's baptism I found in church records of St Matthews Bethnal.Green.London.His name was Anthony Samuel and one your kinsman had the same name as Anthony's brother???

Hello all,

I'm searching for any information on the following people, William Johnston Hay who married Mary Powell 1/1/1865 in nuwara eliya, they had quite a few children William Alexander Hay who ended up in Kuala Lumpur was a famous hunter over there, represented the Burgher community, was a freemason and was one of 5 who represented the Malay states at the coronation of King George V, another son Robert Edwin Hay who came out to Australia and became a police officer, one of his daughters Mary Margaret Aliquot Hay married a James Stewart de Saram, another son Dr George Powell Hay who was Mayor of Kandy for a while, represented the Burgher community, set up many medical practices, had a quite a few children himself, also he was a medical officer on the German ss valdivia expedition ship, was also known as a French and German scholar, went to Ceylon medical school, then to Edinburgh, then to the Royal institute of medical college London. 2 daughters Nora etheline Hay and Nellie constance Hay. What I'm after is information about the parents, one of them was clearly Burgher as all sons were considered Burghers, I don't think it was Mary Powell though as she was considered an industrious Englishwoman. So if anyone can help out please let me know.

Kind regards,
Lucas

Hi, thanks for your reply. I already have the marriage information of John to Ann, and daughters Priscilla to William Siddell and Elizabeth to Colour Sjt. William Thorpe of the 15th foot (from whom I descend). The 97th were in Portsmouth in November 1836 where John Peverly died. They then went on to Woolwich where Elizabeth was born, and then to Manchester in 1837 before leaving England again.
The story of how Priscilla and Elizabeth got back to Ceylon may never be known. Ann Peverly, prev Fitzpatrick must have married a 3rd soldier from a different regiment and returned to Ceylon with him.
I did just hope that somewhere there might have been a record of Ann's name before Fitzpatrick but it is a dim hope.
Alison, you are in luck in as much as we have just finished transcribing Army and Chaplain returns Ceylon B/BMDs indexes from the lists on the Familyrelatives website, which are free to view online. Please check references before ordering as transcriptions can easily be transposed.
Ann Fitzpatrick and John Peverly both have the same marriage
date, 1833 and ref number,597. This probably means Anne was married to someone other than a Fitzpatrick most probably as there does not appear to be an army death in Ceylon for a Fitzpatrick until the 1870s.
There are also Army marriages for Elizabeth Peverly 1850/59 ref 625, and Priscilla 1850/59 ref 621.
Birth/baptism record,Pricilla Frederica born 1834 ref 253.
These records are in the National Archives at Kew. I think the 97th went to Corfu and Zante in 1842 so it looks as though the family stayed in Ceylon, Dad probably swapped regiments and the Childrens marriages may give a clue to which one. cheers, Larry&Coreen

It is Interesting to Note That Daniel Detloff Van Ranzow son of Count Carel Van Ranzow Governor of Riouw was the First Dutch Burgher to Come to Australia.
Hi,
A bit of a long shot here but I'm trying to help a friend discover her Mother's death record/burial...

The person we're looking for is
Helen Pritchard (nee Hutchinson) born 1907 in Newcastle, UK. Married Fred Pritchard in 1945. Fred was a civil servant and was posted to Aden in early 1960. I have been told that families were not allowed in Aden and that she would be living in a Families compound in Sri Lanka (Colombo).
She left the UK (assume for Colombo) in June/July 1960 and died sometime in August 1960.
I've been unable to trace any Uk or overseas death or any passenger records for Helen Pritchard.
Is anyone aware of where this families compound could've been.
Many thanks

Hi Fiona,

I was delighted to receive your email as I am currently trying to trace our UK Family.

I spoke with Ancestry.co.uk just today re your Great Grandfather Robert E G Tilleke as there was a transcription error in the 1901 census and I couldn't find him.

Your Great Grandfather and my Great Grandfather were brothers, I have made some progress with tracing the Family Tree and would be happy to share this with you as we share the same Great Great Grandfather. Please get in touch, I live in Kent; if you are in the UK it would be good to meet.

Debbie

Hi Debbie,

I'm afraid I know very little about the Goonetilleke family in Kandy & what I have found out is all from the Twentieth Century Impressions book or from the Singapore digitised newspapers.

My great-grandfather was Robert Edwin Goone Tilleke (born about 1876 in Kandy) who was William Alfred Tilleke's younger brother. I've found mentions of two other brothers ("A. F" (b 1861) & "E. W" (b 1864)) in the newspaper records. All 4 left Sri Lanka to live in either Bangkok or Singapore. I haven't come across any information on any other brothers or mentions of "The Shrubbery" or tea planting in connection with this family.

Sorry I haven't got any info that might be of more help to you.
Fiona

I'm seeking any info connected with this name - Norman KA was born in Donegal, Ireland, in 1901 to Thomas Anderson an Artificer in the Royal Navy and Elizabeth Manning. He later moved to Ceylon where he was a Cpl in the Ceylon Mounted Rifles in the 2ndWW. He married Winifred M Luck who was born in Tasmania, and had at least two children, Hugh and a daughter. Norman died around 1960 -in Ceylon -
Hugh married Cynthia Leask and his sister married an 'unknown' Pryor. Both families had 3 children whom we know.

It would be helpful if you are able to provide any of the missing info, dates and names and places and where the data is currently - and of course any anecdotal info.

Many thanks

Hi Larry and Coreen

I am researching Michael Griffin (who came to Australia as a solider in the third fleet) and his family who settled in early sydney. In particular I am interested in two sons Nathaniel (aka Matthew) and Thomas Griffin. They joined the army in Sydney as drummers and then privates. The last record I found for Nathaniel shows that he was transferred to the 73rd in 1813 prior to their departure to Ceylon. The record for Thomas shows returned to England.
I would much appreciate it if you are still doing it, to look up the Early British Ceylon Military Records for Nathaniel and Thomas Griffin.
Thanks very much.
Odette Mayne

Hi Richard
My name is Richard as well and I am a descendent of Lyel Ferdinands who along with your grand uncle built the "Zephyr" from the ground up. The story goes that my grandfather was "cheated" out of his recognition for this and subsequently he became a broken man and lost his family to Calcutta. One of the Rowlands paid my grandmother's and children's way to Calcutta where she lived with her sister for a while. The story is vast but I can tell it to you the best I know as my uncle Trevor Ferdinands is still alive and knows quite a bit.
All the best
Richard Bird
p.s. My email is ggrb@iinet.net.au I live in Perth Western Australia

Hi James
Yes I am still very interested although I have not done much work on the Sibbalds as I have been concentrating on the Harveys, our mutual ancestors! I will be fascinated to know which of William Harvey's siblings you are descended from. I reckon that we are 4th cousins. Rather than continuing to use this message board perhaps it would be best to correspond through our individual emails. Would you respond to me on theferrofamily@lineone.net ?
Regards
Dick

Hi Dick,

I don't know whether you are still looking but I only just found your post. The Jane Sibbald you mention married my GGGrand-uncle William Edward Harvey and I have the following notes re her father William on my tree which might be of interest though they're not specifically about Ceylon;

Obit in Association medical journal;

"Sibbald, William, M.D., at Maidstone, aged 63, on February 15th. Dr. Sibbald graduated at Edinburgh in 1809, and in August 1810, entered the medical department of the army. During the campaigns of 1813 and 1814, he served in the Peninsula, being present at the battles of Orthes and Tou
louse. In June 1814, he accompanied the expedition to New Orleans; and on his return in 1815, joined the army at Brussels, soon after the battle of Waterloo. In this year he became Staff-Surgeon. In 1817, he went to the Mauritius; and, after a few years, he proceeded on promotion as Deputy Assistant-Inspector to Ceylon. On retiring, in July 1833, with the rank of Physician to the Forces, he settled at Maidstone; and was soon afterwards appointed Physician to the West Kent Infirmary, the duties of which office he discharged till a week before his death. He was also Visiting Physician to the Kent County Lunatic Asylum, and Consulting Physician to the Kent Ophthalmic Hospital at Maidstone. He had received the war medal with three clasps."

'The Asiatic journal and monthly miscellany, Volume 6 By East India Company' says he arrived with his wife on March 18, 1818 having left the Cape on January 25th.

I'm fascinated by the widowed Jane's 1871 census which appears to have her living with a painter and his wife, a pianist and composer, an author and his wife, and a visitor with no occupation and a servant, apparently all as a single household, one of several at the same address. It sounds positively Bohemiam, especially for a vicar's widow.

Jane's MI in the Church of the Blessed Mary, Walmer, Kent, England reads;

'M of William Harvey, Priest, M.A. Oxon.Youngest son of Sir Thomas Harvey K.C.B. Vice Admiral of the White, died March 18th 1865 aged 41 years and of Jane his wife, died December 7th 1891 aged 66 years. Both are buried in this churchyard and also of their children William, Flag Lieutenant H.M.S. Bellerophon, died at Halifax N.S. October 13th 1879 aged 28 years. Henry Nowell, Barrister at Law, Middle Temple. Died December 22nd 1828 aged 76 years. Helen Jane died April 1st 1877 aged 23 years. Alice Maude wife of John Richard Statham died January 30th 1945 aged 87 years'

James.

PS Just seen that William Sibbald was "Surgeon to the forces in the Isle of France" [ie. Mauritius] when he wed in 1817. Blackwood's magazine, Oct.1817, p.126. So perhaps he came back to London to wed, or was given the job title and married before actually going to Mauritius.
