I believe I may have found our John Grant, a co-owner in the Scottish India Coffee Company, Ltd.l, along with Patrick Grant and John Forger. In Lloyds of London Scottish archives he is mentioned as having met in Inverness along with his partners and being appointed financial manager of the venture, and purchasing 10,000 acres in Ashamboo Hills, Travancore. To make a long story short the coffee blight along with overvaluing the company hurt profits, and upon returning to the East Indies, John became sick in the fall of 1873, and died returning to Mentone, Edinburgh on April 11,1874. If you would like sources for the info, please let me know.
