I don't know who stitched the beautiful embroidery but just happy that my Dad enjoyed it so much over the years.

Did your aunt Philomena live the remainder of her life serving Star of the Sea? How did she choose this ministry?
Did she share her stories with you?

While searching for information on my Great Aunt, Sister Philomena, I came across these posts. Great stories. Loved reading this one about your father volunteering at the orphanage when she was there. Would like to know if she actually made the embroidery herself. I had to laugh when I read about the Irish whiskey.
Not sure if you will ever see this post since it has been several years.
Tricia

I'm looking for any information about my wife's father, Lee Gyeongson (이경손) or any of his relatives in Korea. He was born in 1905 and became a writer and film maker in the 1920's and also opened the first coffee shop in Korea, called Cacadew (카카듀). He left Korea for Shanghai, about 1930, then on to Thailand. He died in Bangkok in 1978. His brother, father and grandfather were doctors.

Attached is the most comprehensive information I have on my deceased grandmother. She was living in Japan, I presume was born in Osaka, when she married my grandfather and moved to the United States where she died in 1984. I believe her parents lived in Jeju, South Korea while she lived with her aunt and uncle in Japan. I'm trying to find out where her relatives are. She immigrated to the US on April 16, 1957 in Honolulu.

I've been trying to find out information for years but this is all I have to go on. I'm currently living in Korea but I'm on my way out so I want to give this another chance before I leave.

Any leads on what to do with this information would be immensely appreciated!

When I was very young, I believe I was 2 or 3 years old, my father was called up for another tour of duty during the Korean War with the United States. He was a surgeon on a Navy ship called the Repose. When he had days off, he would take a tender to Incheon. On one trip to Incheon, he passed the Star of the Sea Orphanage and stopped to smile at the children playing outside - reminding him of his daughter back home in Cleveland, Ohio USA. Sister Philamena (spelling??) noticed his medical insignia and "asked" (more like cajoled) my father into volunteering to help - many of the Korean women/American soldier relationships resulted in abandoned babies. Many of the babies were dehydrated and unnourished. Although my dad was a surgeon, he had enough basic pediatrics as a medical student that he could treat the babies - he would sneak IV fluids and medication from the ship to the Star of the Sea . . . he pursuaded the supply officers to order more than the needed so American soldiers had what they needed, but if his "smuggling" would have been identified, he could have been court marshaled, tried, and jailed!

He told me what a joy it was for him to play with the kids when he was so far from home. He involved other doctors from the hospital ship also. I remember photographs of playing Santa Claus and delivering simple gifts at Christmas.

When I was older and my Dad was home to stay, I would go to our church to help him pack donated clothing, medical supplies, and canned foods that were shipped to Sister Philamena. She sent my Dad the gift of a beatiful embroidery on kittens in a basket, stitched on silk . . . he treasured that gift until he died.

I remember his stories about the Sisters including the habit of Sister Philamena offering Dad a shot of Irish whiskey that she kept "for medicinal purposes."

I wanted to tell you about the heritage of the Star of the Sea from another perspective - its a very precious memory of my father.

Have you received other information about Star of the Sea in the 1950's?

Linda

My wife was born in Incheon in October of 1968 and within a couple of days was left in a local market with a note to take care of her. Her Korean name (given by the orphanage or the family she stayed with) was Mi Na Yoon. She was later adopted by an american family and brought over in 1970. Her guardian while in Seoul Korea was listed as the Mayor of Seoul. Any thoughts on finding family? Where to begin?

Have you found out if Star of the Sea Orphange is still around? I also had been at the orphange back in 1961 and was adopted by an incredible American family.
I would love to know if that orphange exists today.

Marianne

looking for mother's family Chun Ja Song/Hardukasong

I am looking for any information on my mother's family in Incheon & Daegu Korea. Her father's name is/was Chun Shik Song (not sure of the spelling) My mother was born in 1945 & left in 1962. Her grandmother had a farm in Daegu Korea. She does not remember her name, could be Sue Yong Song. My mother's Uncle was a Doctor in Daegu Korea, last name Song. This would be the 50's & 60's. Please help with any information... Also looking for her mother, she was taken from her mother in Yokohama Japan at the age of 5, her mother named her Hardukasong. She does not remember much so I know this is a long shot.... She believes her mother's name is Yoshiko. So if anyone knows of someone in Yokohama that had a daughter at the age of 5 taken away to Korea by Chun Shik Song I believe around 1950 please let me know.... I know there is little information to go on by I would like to try. This is a heartbreaking story. I wish that my mother could know what happened to her mother.

Hi Sou,
I wouldn't know where to begin looking for my parents. I was found abandoned on the streets by some nuns in the middle of winter and taken in to Star of the Sea Orphanage. There is absolutely no record of my birth and my parents left no papers on me.
That would be so cool to have a Star of the Sea Orphanage reunion.
How old were you when you left in 1966 that you remember me?
I finally was adopted in October 1970.
I am married and have 5 children. They are 19, 17, 14, 9, and almost 8. I had them all c-section. 2 of them were over 8lbs, 2 were 7lbs, and only one was 6lbs. They were all nice and healthy.
I am a paraprofessional (special education aid) but I am currently working on getting a teacher degree. By the end of December I will hopefully have accomplished that.
Do you have any memories of the orphanage? I do. I also remember going to Seoul at Korea Social Service and waiting there till I went to America, approximately one week later.
That was quite the experience I will not forget.
It is so awesome to hear back.
Jodi
