I'm a da Silva. My Father Andre da Silva was from Yokohama, Japan. His father Guilherme Alberto da Silva was from Macau, China. His father is Timotio Emmanuel from Goa, India. His father was from Portugal. We have a very large Family. Most of us now live in California. One great uncle Francisco Braz da silva moved to Brazil sometime before 1940. We lost touch with his line during WWII. We would love to meet more da Silvas from Goa, Brazil or Macau.

Joe da Silva

.

Hello,
I have just come across your request from 2011. I have been researching my family and came across the surname "Sharnhorst". In the records the "c" has been omitted on some occasions. At some stage in the early 1900's John Albert Hendricks married Theodore Josephine Scharnhorst. Albert John Hendricks is my great grand father. If it is the same family branch and you would like more information please get in touch. Alternatively you may wish to pursue these leads on your own. I found this information from the Mormon library. Regards. Merle.

I am trying to find some information about the death of a civilian in Singapore in 1972 when he was hit by a car. I know there was an inquest, possibly as late as 1973, but have not been able to find it reported in the papers. It occurred in the vicinity of the Kangaw Barraks. I have looked in the Singapore News Archives and contacted their Librarian but can find nothing. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where I should look next?
Pat

Have you contacted Jennifer Mather? She is the genealogist of the Constance branch of the family as she is a great grandaughter of Constance and Walter Mather. I'm the great granddaughter of Hermance. Constance married twice, being widowed from Arthur Bentley (possibly a relative) with three small children. She and her sister Mayence went out to South Africa. Constance stayed, married Walter Mather, had eight more children, opened a boarding house and lived into her nineties. Mayence and her husband (maybe) W. S. Bent went north to Nairobi where they tried farming but Mayence ended up opening the Stanley hotel, which she ran with her second husband,Fred Tate, until Fred's health necessitated a return to England in 1937. She kept part ownership of the hotel until 1948, was the guest of honour at the opening of the New Stanley Hotel, and lived to her nineties too. She had one daughter, Gladys.
Muriel in Chilliwack

I know that they were both interned during the Japanese occupation of Singapore from 1942, and came back to the UK after the war. Is there anywhere that will give me information about civilian POWs? I found the Changi museum site, but the civilian database does not seem to be working.

You are right, a lot of children born in Malaysia do not have registered birth certificates (even today) But being a white family from Europe if you know the name of the tin mine (or even a village name) I'm sure you can trace, Seremban now is a larger city although still quite "kampong" in mentality (means village in Malay) So whomever married your Grandparents (village elder, etc) Most of those records would be kept with the family who performed the ceremony as usually the kids follow in their footsteps. Same goes for the midwife who delivered your mother and aunt. Also they definitely would have had some help from the UK consulate (certificate of descent or a special pass to receive a passport)If you do find any info and need it translated to Malay let me know as my husband is fluent.

Thank you for your suggestion. I tried the link but it appeared to be aimed at recent registrations.
I am afraid that my grandparents' marriage and my mother's and aunt's births were probably not registered as they were living in such a remote area. He was managing a tin mine in the jungle! My mother once told me that she didn't have a birth certificate and now I think that was probably true. But because she had a passport, I felt that she must have produced some document about her birth.

I was just reading your post and although I have no real info for you the best I can tell you is to try Malaysia. Any records before Singapore became independent will be with Malaysia (not sure if link can be of help..but http://www.jpn.gov.my/en/servicesmarriageordivorce ...its worth a try. Your main problem is with the government not keeping great records and they are usually too lazy to bother to try and look . I know from experience as my husband is Singaporean and I gave birth in Malaysia. Good luck!

Does anyone know if these records are to be found in Singapore?

I can't trace their parents marriage in the UK records so I am also searching for the record of their marriage around 1900.

Any help would be much appreciated. Until I know their parents I can't trace them on the census as they are common names and I don't know where they came from in the UK.

Re: Forbes-Davidson

Hi Polly,
Have just found this post and shown it to my friend who has Davidson ancestry. As she does not have a computer she has asked me to send this to you. Here goes.....

"My grandmother, born Grace Margaret Davidson in London in 1879, had a younger brother - Leonard Forbes Davidson (Forbes is a middle name from an ancestor). There were 11 children in all. I am told the older ones were born in England and the younger in Singapore. Leonard and his wife Gladys had two or possibly three daughters - one of which, I'm guessing, is your mother as she married a Mr Wilson.

Leonard's parents were Thomas C Davidson born Nov 6 1847, died May 25,1927 and Elizabeth Moss born July 7 1855? (year uncertain), died April 17, 1934. One of Elizabeths sisters married an Emerson.

Thomas had a rubber plantation, said to have been inherited from his brother, at Kuala Kubu, Selangor, Malaya where he lived some of the time (and where he died) and also a house in Singapore where he was honorary US Vice Consul General. He and Elizabeth were buried in Singapore.

I have not been able to trace Thomas's parents but my grandmother was proud of his Scottish ancestry and one of her sisters visited their grandparents in Edinburgh in the 1890s.

Because of the Forbes name and the connection with Singapore, I wonder if Thomas could have been a third son of Gordon Forbes Davidson and Sarah Whittle who in 1845 entered in the register of St Cuthberts parish, Edinburgh the births of two sons, Gordon Forbes born Aug 23 1839 in Singapore and John born Feb 21 1845 in Edinburgh".

Hi .. First I must tell you that this lady must have been a prisoner of war and died soon after in 1845..civilian people were first interred in Changi and then transferred to Sime Road camp..(my father was the same)so she must have died just before the war ended or just after..Information on this might be able to be sourced from the Red Cross.. I got my info from the Australian Red Cross..
Searching for information in Singapore is very difficult. the only site that I know of is the digitised newspapers site I will give you below.. I did a quick serach but not knowing the family I dont know if I found anything interesting..I know I did for myself when searching.Put in the searchbox just the surname you are after and see what comes up..then try variations of words and names.

http://newspapers.nl.sg/Digitised/SearchResults.aspx?keyword...

Good luck
Mary
I am afraid Singapore and the East are very hard to search on line and
the site below of the Singapore newspaper Straights Times is the only one
that I know of..I feel that he was a policeman or prison warder as he has
attached to his uniform a whistle that was used in early 1900 as part of
their uniform..My father was a prison warder in 1929 and he wore a whistle
as part of his uniform..though the uniform was not as elaborate as the one
in the picture..Just karki shorts and shirt..I would say the picture is a
lot earlier..Try this site and put in anything that you can connect to the
name or occupation that you know of.

http://newspapers.nl.sg/Default.aspx

Good luck

Mary
Sydney

Hi. I have just read your information regarding Marie Sophia Olmeijer. She was my great great great great grandmother from my maternal side. My Grandfather's Grandmother was Constance Woodbury. I presume she was Marie's daughter. I was wondering if you had any information regarding her children. Constance married William Mather in South Africa.

Thanks

Jacqui

Dear Ann,

Apologies for not replying sooner. Your information did indeed help as we did not know the year they had been married. Thank you for taking the time to look.

Kind regards,

Sophie
