Hi Holmbergs,
Despite the fact that my name isn't Holmberg and I am not related to any Holmbergs, I have taken an interest and done quite a lot of research about the family's history here in Singapore, reaching back to Malaysia of course, but also fining some Holmbergs in India in the late 1700s. (I am Swedish - that's my entry point to the whole thing. ) The name as it stands now is distinctly Swedish, but can of course have been changed from any similar Germanic surname, e.g. from Dutch, German or Danish. And where is the link between Europe and Asia - the British colonial authority, the Dutch East India Company, or something else? There are some things to be found in the archives here in Singapore, but not a lot. Given that many Holmbergs in the Straits settlements have a history as civil servants and skilled workers in the governments employ, they will have followed the British colonial service from Ipoh and southwards. But before that, it's difficult to find any information.
I would be very interested in learning:
- any clues to where, how and why the Holmbergs came to reside in Asia
- names of people as far back in time as can be remembered through the generations
Looking forward to hearing from you!
