Some of US documents should have their precise place of birth. Did you look if they were naturalized citizen? Any social security numbers? http://ssdi.rootsweb.com
Their arrival manifest should have their place of birth. Most likely the US born children's church baptismal records should have the parents place of birth.

You might follow up on the census notations.
You know that Russia of old is not the size of Russia present. What was the language spoken by this ancestor?

Hi:

There is a voters list available from 1849 darn I forget the year off hand. This covers the Molotschna Mennonite Colonies

Plus depending which Mennonite colonies there is some from 1942 available also. But they need to be from the Chortitza Colonies. We call these Village Reports.

These are in Old German Script (handwriting).

Then there are Mennonite societies that will/should have more.

As far as learning Russian it is not an easy task. I have learned it somewhat but I am far from being good with it. The more I do the better I'll get.

All my ancestors were Lutheran's from Russia so I can not help much more.

Brian

Apparently there are only 4 people on ancestry.com interested enough in Russian censuses to post a message, you, me, and these people:
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.asia.russia.general/29...
http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.asia.russia.general/33...

Honestly I have no idea how to go about finding them, or if they are available, but I would like to add my voice: I'd also be interested in finding Russian censuses. Even if I had to teach myself the Cyrillic alphabet or something. Any help on this would be welcome. 3/4 of my ancestors were Mennonites in Russia from around 1800 to 1925.

There was ten "Revisions" in Russian empire, which are a kind of censuses:
1718, 1743, 1762-64, 1781-1783, 1794, 1811, 1815, 1833, 1850, 1857.

The next full-scale census was done in 1897.

Then comes 1926 and 1937 years.

Source documents for those censuses are scattered around different archives and, in general, has never been scanned/microfilmed.

Searching them is possible only with the use experienced researchers, only if you have plenty of other iidentifying information, and requires a good degree of luck.

"Ispowednye rospisi," which were compiled at every church annually, are the much better genealogical source, fom my humble point of view.

PS Russian handwriting, abbreviations and common words are usually required to decipher those books, alphabet is not enough :)

It is possible Timofey did not have numbers. The numbers could be listed on his death certificate. Did you already request his naturalization intent? Possible someone in the family has his naturalization certificate. Not much information there but at least the name of a courthouse that is holding. Not sure if the old naturalization intent asked who they left in old country.

You're welcome.
You might try Russia's or Ukraine's http://genforum.com Find Nancy's query there and post a inquiry to her.
Church records of Ushkany (sp?) would be a way to go to find parents names.
If your Timofey has SS-5Form, it is possible he put down names of his parents.

Erik Eriksson Holmstrom and Lisa Mattsdr married Jan. 18, 1824 in Ahlainen, Finland. I would like to learn Erik's parents and his brothers' names. Lisa Mattsdr is a myster....who were her parents. Also any death data on these two would be important to me. (Lisa was my maternal G. G. Grandmother. This is my first post. Thank you, Raynold
