Thanks.... The Galovic side is from Matiasovce in Slovakia. I've been able to research this line through many means.... family records and Family DNA sub projects have helped tremendously.
However, on my mother's side, my grandmother's name was Anna. When she arrived in the US through Ellis Island, she was listed as Anna Szanka (Dec 6 1912). Here and on her naturalization paperwork, she listed Kis Rakocz as her town or origin. This town is now Malyi Rakovets, a small town in what is now the southwest Ukraine. The church records, according to the LDS church which has copies of the records, are in Russian. However, I'm gotten split results. Some say it is Old Russian, some say it is Ukrainian.
Szanka was what she came though Ellis Island with. She used Savko when queried about her maiden name. Others in the family, used Salko as the name.
I posted on the Russian board hoping that someone would be able to get me started in the right direction. Nick, an earlier response, was also helpful.
