What is the ancestor's surname?
Is this from an US document?
Did you try www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm
1900 Russia is not the size of present Russia.

I hadn't tried the JewishGen Seeker yet but when I do I get a whole list so I'm not sure which is the right one ... because I also realize that there may be spelling errors in what I have from a ship passenger list.
Surname is Wendland

Can you attach a scan of the manifest? I do not find any WENDLANDs arriving thru Ellis Island from Babick.
Any other US document on this ancestor to give you a better spelling?

There's Babich, Russia
Babichi, Ukraine
Babicha, Poland
My previous records just said Russia but it's just been today that I got the town/village from the ship records.
But Russia from back then could also really mean Ukraine or Poland.
Who knows?
I looked up the 1st one on a map and it is pretty far into Russia ... since they departed from Hamburg , Germany it almost seems too far to be realistic.

Here you go.
The only other documents I have on them are Canadian Census but I'll keep looking because they arrived in New York & the ship was called Milano (departed Sept 1901, arrived 1902)

Yes, and possibly it can also be in Lithuania and Bielorussia as well. No naturalization petition, draft registration, state marriage application, church marriage record, SS-5Form that would give you a more precise location like a name of gubernia?

It does look like Babick. This is the English version of the manifest.
Wandlen, Ludwig Babrek 38 1863 1901
