Can anyone help me find this village/town in Russia? The original surname was Bajewski, but morphed to Bayefsky/Bofsky/Bafsky/Byer. They all came from 'Karlik'. The town/village is listed in numerous documents from naturalization records to ship manifests to census'. It is spelled differently in everything. I am sure it is the same place. It is always listed as in Russia.

The trouble is, I can not find it anywhere in Russia. This family was Jewish and members arrived in US between 1890-1900, with a couple coming 1900-1906. Is the village no longer there because it was a Jewish village and they all left or were killed later? Where is/was this place?

1899: Kagaslik or Kapaslik or Kajaslik or Kagarslik (scribbly writing on ship manifest)
1909: Karlyk
1913: Kardick
1922: Karlik
1924: Karliek
1924: Cagarlek

I realize it could be in Poland, too, as part of Poland was Russian then. I did find a Karlik in Turkey, but I am dubious that is the same place. The family has always said 'Russia' never 'Turkey'.

I appreciate any insight to this frustrating identification.
