I have been searching for my husband's family from Russia. They immigrated to St. Louis, MO in 1891 and then eventually settled in Pittsburgh, PA. The census all indicate Russia as the place of birth on all of the individuals who were born in Russia. I have been unable to find a city or country in Russia. One of the members of the family in 1930 apparently told the census taker they were from Kiev and it was later crossed out and Russia was entered beside the word Kiev. So, it could be the Ukraine as family lore talked about the area changing from one country to another. It was recently suggested to me that the family name Mazerov could mean "son of Mazer". Does anyone have enough knowledge of Russian names to tell me if that is a possiblity that the family name could actually be Mazer? I know 'ova' on the end of family name is done for females. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me.
