The names are not of the Russian origin. They look like names of Poles or Slovaks. But the bearers of them could have lived in Russia.

Are the followin Russian names?

Can anyone tell me if any of the listed names are Russian in origin? My grandmother was a Mifkovitch and she married a Struhar. My other grandmother was a Mesko who married a Malyar.

Please help! If possible, give correct spellings of names.

thanks....

I have always thought that the name Struhar was Hungarian. I might be wrong. I do know that is where my grandparents came from.

My Grandmother's name was Struhar, so I agree with Elaine, that Slovak is the way to go. She was born in what was then labeled by War as Austria Hungary, however, we knew of it as Slovakia or Czechoslovakia. There are still some Struhar relation that can be contacted.

Let me know if you are able to get more feedback from others.

Hans:

You are correct, since in those days the country of the Slovak people was considered to be Austria/Hungary. I have a picture of my Great Grandfather in his military uniform. His name was Michael Struhar. My Grandmother was Veronica Struhar & her brother that also came the the United States was Vincent Struhar. The remainder of the family I believe remained in the present day country of Czechoslovakia.

Let me know if we are somehow related, as I have the name of the community and the other brothers and sisters.

I believe the surname MESKO to be Hungarian. I am a mesko, taking my father's name. My father was born in Budapest and to my knowledge all of our earier relatives were born and later died in Hungary.
Hope this helps

Thank you!

My grandmother's village was Velikiye Komyaty (today - Ukraine) aka Velikiye Komyaty (c. 1950 - Soviet Union) aka Veľké Komjaty (c. 1930, Subcarpathia, Czechoslovakia), aka Magyarkomját (c. 1900, Ugocsa, Maramaros, Hungary). She was known as Martha Mesko and she is pictured in the wedding photo. Her sister was Marie Mesko, who is shown in the other photo. Would anyone have any other knowledge of them?
