But as far as the National Archives in the US, I am slowly learning more about it and actually learning about it now. See archives.gov and contact them. Because certain archives will house records for certain areas. You could ask around to find out where Philippines, if they have, would be housed.

Hi, im not sure how to begin helping you, to begin with, we dont have much available information here in the Philippines... exept if you go and ask the help of NSO... example you can get a birth certificate copy from NSO if you know the details of your grandfather, even just the date of birth.. you can do this online for a fee and it will be delivered to you.. because thru that, you will see the details of your great grandparents... hope even a bit it helps..

Or, do it from the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints' FAMILY HISTORY CENTER, which is what I did prior to going to my grandmother's church, which wasn't helpful actually. :)

That's a great idea! And try to get the dates when they were born (estimates will work) and most importnatly WHERE the event took place. That means, where they were born, married and died. This way it's easier to trace THROUGH DOCUMENTATION.

Hi Mamoahina,
Thanks for your help I appreciate it thanks for wishing me good luck. I will ask them to tell me the story of my Great Grand father and so forth of the 1560's. My Grandmother lived up until here early nineties. She died of cancer in the throat back in November of 2006. I have a copy of her funeral with me at home. I watch it once in a while. I couldn't attend her funeral back home only my Father flew back to the Philippines to attend the funeral. Then he went to her burial with both sides of my family from his side and my mom's side of my my families.

But we're talking about 24 years of research.

Hi Mamoahina,
I don't know the name of the Conquistador. I only knew the name of My Great Grandfather back in the 1700's One of my Spanish Relatives married a Chinese woman in the 1800s.
My relatives I never knew lived up from 100BC until the seventeen hundreds. This woman has a surname Tan and then I had a grandfather named with the last name Codon he was part Spanish, Chinese, Filipino. My Relatives lived up until the 1700's now I have my Filipino family left since they died.
Some one told me something bad happened to my Grandmother since she met this conquistador.

Well, I as well as other people I've researched don't come from wealthy families, but records were not limited to the wealthy. That isn't how the records were kept. They kept records of everyone, or should've been everyone in the area.

But try to focus on the actual facts and the records that are available rather than making up some type of possible scenario without evidence to prove it was so.

That's only 3 generations away from you and impossible to have 3 generations since the 1500s, and if so, what was this conquistador's name?

Most Filipinos can't even figure out how to get past their great-grandparents, when the records are available.

Well, I can tell you that although many people say this for generations, at least with the records that i've gone through and I know other Filipinos who traced their lineage in other places not where I'm tracing, they were able to trace their ancestry without any problems.

However, I don't know if these so called records were limited to the recent years? Or specifically to a small area where they occupied. Say that they only occupied Manila, a very small handful obviously. Did they have enough control to order records throughout the entire archipelago to be destroyed? Did they try that? I can only tell you from experience that many of us have had no problems tracing.

But since you put it that way specifically where a family member was killed and relatives, male relatives too (similar to a friend's story I heard) plus his house was burned, I am guessing that this is how the story is perpetuated inaccurately. That's just my assumption, since I always tell people that it isn't true that records were burned. Because in reality, there are many records still in tact.

Also, I find most people who say that actually never tried to trace their ancestry. So unless you have actually traced ancestry using church records, and I know a distant cousin who is commissioned by the city govt. where our family is from to do actual research, and has presented electronic copies of writings from the 1800s just as I have copies from the 1920s and further back with the bulk of my copies in the 1860s & 1870s, that traces my own ancestors who lived in the mid to late 1700s, I'd say that the records are not burned.

And the story I heard growing up was that churches were burned. Perhaps a few were. But doesn't mean all churches and records were burned. Another example would be my grandfather's ancestry. He was from a very tiny island and when I went there, there were a few churches actually, but when they were built, I do not know. However, prior to going to that island, we were on another neighboring island, larger and where my grandfather was from was a municipality of the larger island, so anything with the govt. was handled there. And it was there in the main town's church I was able to access recs. of the people from that island. So what I'm saying is that sometimes, at least in my grandfather's case, one church holds records of another parishes/areas.

What about the more recent history of Japanese occupation? Is it not true that many records were burned in towns that had many Underground forces? In the example of our ancestor, Delfin Pino, he was killed by the Japanese along with all of his male relatives. His house was burned to the ground, according to the family story. Would there be any hope of recovering any records from his home town? I have not been able to find any online so far.

Hi,

Apparently I missed this. Do you know Todd Sales? He may have info. on these families. Around 2004 I sent him a bunch of names and dates of people that I've gathered from 1989 - 1993 which was about 3,000 or so names.

I have FLORES cousins. I've traced some of their other branches, but on the FLORES side, only as far as Leoncio FLORES and his wife Ysabel MANAYAN. Their son Valentin was probably born around 1851. Not sure if that's part of your branch or another one more recent?

Now the SANCHEZ side, ironically I was about to read Todd Sales' blog about it.
http://fil-gen-pro.blogspot.com/2012/03/argao-families-sanch...

Because as I gave todd some of that info. years ago, I told him that it was confusing b/c the recs. sometimes mentioned SANCHEZ, while others it mentioned BIOLON, at least for my own ancestor who was Patrisio BIOLON that married Juana SIDLACAN. In some of the recs I came across, Patrisio BIOLON was also Patricio SANCHEZ.

Isidra GONZAGA married Bartolome KINTANAR whose mother Luisa CAMELLO was related to both my grandmother father and mother.

Fidelina SARDONCILLO married Emilio SANIEL whose maternal grandfather as Roman KINTANAR, another son of Luisa CAMELLO.

Potenciana ALBANDIA married Antonio COMALING, they had Marcela COMALING who married Fulgenio ZAMORA (21 Jul 1873). My great-great-great-grandmother was Apolonia ZAMORA. Fulgenio's father and Apolonia were first cousins.

Adreana LLENA, daughter of Crisanto LLENA and Teodora SARALDE married Protasio CAMELLO. Protasio's father Juan was a brother to Petrona CAMELLO, my great-great-great-grandmother.

It is called The family tree software in front of the box has an old picture of people from the 1800's. I will buy another software since my Dad donated it long time ago when I get a new job. I got laid off twice last year I use to work for two offices. I am now attending an Rop Business computer class so I can learn how to use the computer again. I went to Target or Best buy to buy this software in a blue box. It cost's only $20.00 but I got a discount for it.

Sorry, let me clarify, that what I meant to say is that history of the Philippines is one thing. It's good to know and to understand in order to be aware of when doing genealogy. But the history of your own family doesn't always run parallel with history. So it's best to concentrate on the records that you can obtain rather than go by hearsay for people who lived generations passed of which you don't even have a name for.

Another COMMON misconception and I heard it recently from another Filipino, that recs. were burned. It may, for some, but that doesn't mean the recs. of your own ancestors were burned.

Even when I went to the Philippines finally, I made an effort to extract some church recs. to trace my paternal grandfather's side & my cousins said the same thing including one who is a nun and was with me. They waited for me and I came back about 1 1/2 hours later and they were surprised I traced a couple more generations and got the baptism of my cousin's father of whom they said they did not have, so that was the story back in the 1950s I believe. But here it was in 2004 and I managed to get the record.

What you need to do is to remove the historical past from your own lineage. And concentrate and what you have and work your way backwards as I suggested. Don't make assumptions based on history.

ANY embassy may or may not have recs of entry into the given area. However I don't know what the privacy policies are for the Phillipines or the Spanish embassy in the Philippines. Given that it is a long time ago, that I assume would not be a problem.

But you are talking about some made up story of conquistadores fighting lapu lapu, but that wasn't the case. It was Magellan and his crew that were killed on Mactan. And a couple of decades later the next ship captained by Ruy López de Villalobos that left Mexico with just under a crew of 400 on 6 galleon ships arriving in 1543. This is the same person that named the islands after Philip II, son of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor.

I can understand the guesses or estimation based on previous facts. For example, I had a burial record of my grandmother's great-grandfather Esteban. I had found his burial rec. for 1875 and I estimated his age based on OTHER FACTS, that he was probably born around 1795. I found his siblings as well, their burial recs. and estimated it accordingly to which it made sense. The range I came up based on all the siblings ranged from 1776 - 1816.

Then I came across a burial record for his sister who died in 1866, but this time they listed her age, which was 95 years old. From that I was able to calculate an specific year - 1770. And that is more or less within the range of her other siblings including Esteban which I estimated at 1795. All of which fits perfectly in the range I estimated, but we are talking about 4 - 5 years of genealogy experience by this time.

So, if you do make any notation of a Chinese ancestor of whom you knew actually existed and to which line he belonged to (which of your grandparent descends from him) and the same for your Spanish relatives, then fine.

Rodriguez is such a common name but be sure to make sure that that specific surname was not handpicked from El Catalogo Alfabetico de Apellidos of 1849. Most importantly if you start researching the church records, you'll know for sure if that name came from that book or if it was handed down non-stop generation after generation from a foreign ancestor.

But you mentioned you're not sure if your great-grandfather did a family tree? Do you mean that it exists for your family that someone already gathered some info. on the family?

Hi Mahoahina,
My Great Grandfather in my Dad's side past away when he was in his early eighties like eighty-two. I am not so sure if he did the family tree project like I did. There are a lot of Juan Rodriguez's in here. There was a War in the Philippines back in the 1940's the records got destroyed there was a fire there in my Great Grand parents house. I am not so sure if my Spanish relatives will ever go to Spain's embassy to leave us some documents. It would be hard to find out where he is buried. I don't know for sure if my Spanish relatives are buried either in Spain or the Philippines. A lot of Conquistadors came over to the Philippines during the Armada back in the 1500's to fought with Lapu Lapu and the tribesmen when they arrived in the Philippines. Then I made a special binder to keep record of my deceased and present family. I just put 1700's on a white sheet of paper for my family tree. I drew a big tree on my binder then colored the branches green and colored the trunk of the tree brown. I had made my own family tree online using Microsoft Word. Then I just made a guess that my Chinese relatives lived up to 1800's.
