I was wondering if anyone might be connected to my grandfather that was born in the Federation of Malaysia Straits (Kuala Lumpur) about 1901. I do not know his father's name but his mother's name was Mary/Marie Coakley (born about 1881 in Ireland). My grandfather had one sister Lily who was born in the location (1904), his brother Hector was born in Hong Kong (1903) and Jerome who was born in Ireland about 1913. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Looking for Gerald McEllistrim or McIllistrim later Gerald Montrio

Could anyone help me with some information?
I'm looking for information about Gerald McEllistrim. It seems he was born at Cardiff, Wales, England on Dec 21st 1908, but some papers point he was Irish.
His parents names were John McEllistrim + Julia (but she's not sure). Gerald was a merchant navy seaman and he travelled around the world. On April 1936 he asked for American Naturalization and on the papers of petition says that his name was "Gerald Montrio (formerly Gerald McEllistrim or Gerald McEllistrim Brooks). He emigrated to USA from Singapore Malaya. It's a mistery the reason for which he changed his paternal name McEllistrim to Montrio.
He married in USA with an Argentinian woman and had 2 children a boy (called Gerald like him) and a girl. His children brought the adopted name Montrio.
His son Gerald dissappeared with a friend (they both had 15 and 13 years old) and never had been found. Now this story is a cold case recently reopened and published in the NAMUs data base.
His daughter says her father never told them about his origins, his family. She knows very little about his father.
Why he changed his family name?

Thank you very much for your helpful note. I have tried a lot of routes to get records here but no success- at least the newspaper archive on line has some hope. I am trying to trace a grandfather who was born there, but by the 1901 census the family was back in Uk with the father presumably dead and the wife working as a tobacco packer to keep the family alive. Such times!

Hi everyone who has spoken about finding information on people born/married/dying in the Strait Settlements. My Grandmother, Catherine Robertson, was born in Singapore and recently I found out her mother, Ho Cho (Nellie) Kim, was born in Penang.
Just wanted to tell you that as most of the birth records etc (apart from not being compulsory to be registered), are not digitised, so all searches are charged by each month that is searched. If you're like me, even the year may be difficult to pin down, let alone a month or date.
I found the best palce to find any details is on this site: http://newspapers.nl.sg/ it is the archives for the Strait Times, you have to play with the wording of your search a little bit, but I've found obituaries, social details, addresses and many other clues that have lead further to fill in the gaps. It may be useful. I even found a bit article and photo from my grandparents wedding during WWII in Singapore (although, I had seen a cut out of the original article previously).
Hope this helps!

You are most welcome. I am glad you were able to find entries there that have been of interest and use to you. Of course you may ask. And the answer to your question, how I choose which notices to include on my blog is simply, what notices appear in the newspaper issue I happen to have come across to date. My modus operandi is to search out old newspapers, when I find one I then run through it to see what columns are in it that relate to my ancestors, and at the same time if there are any birth, marriage or death notices, and if there are, to copy those down. So if I do not have the entry you are looking for it means I have not gone through the newspaper that has that notice. I had intended my site to be a shortcut for people searching for info on their ancestors. The long cut is the way I am doing it, which is to look for old newspapers and then go through them one at a time. If you are in London, you could also try the Public Records Office. Or you could get online and search but payment is required - I cannot recall how much it cost me, as I did my last PRO search about 10 yrs ago.

I have had a look at it.
I have found two references to my relatives which is great.

Can I ask how you choose which notices to include on your blog?
Hello,

I'm Vanessa Shao Yen Skadiang. My father is Peter Gerald Skadiang and he has two brothers and a sister, and their father is Frank Skadiang. Frank lived and died in Singapore. My father's brother and sister live there too. My father and I live in the UK and my father's other brother lives in Borneo, Malaysia.

We understand that the Skadiangs originated from the Bidau tribe in Malaysia. Any help would be great.

There is a lot of Skadiang's in Australia.

Just saw you asking for help. Please can you provide me with any information?

I am searching for information about Nora (b.1904) and Violet (b.1906) daughters of Richard Philip Phillips and Emily Helena (nee Downey) who lived in Penang before and after 1908. I believe Richard Phillips died in 1945 at Sime Road Internment Camp, Singapore. Any info about Emily or their daughters? Did Violet marry Cyril Loos Ephraums of Ceylon?

My great grandmother's name was Edith Charlotte REGINA and one of her son's names was FREDERICK Charles.

Do you know where Jane was born? Or her husband's name (C A). I'd be very interested in pictures and learning anything about her. I have some pictures of Edith, she was beautiful.

According to a newspaper notice, C.A. and Jane had eight children, five girls and three boys.

Look forward to hearing from you, wish I could get to Penang myself....

Jill

George died last year in Western Australia.
I met Jack Chalker at our last Researching FEPOW History Conference.
I have the following on John Watts - is it correct that he was in banking before planting? I see he went to Thailand with the terrible F Force. Is he still with us?

WATTS J.B. [John Beresford] b.1917 Morecombe. Assistant, Chartered Bank. Manager, Seremban Ltd.

Hello Jonathan

The 'C.A' evacuee refer to in your message is my father - Charles Alasdair Ephraums. The sites I referred you to will give you more information there.
Thank you for the link to the Malayan Volunteers Group. I was aware that my Grandfather ordered everyone to leave Malaya when the Japanese terror campaign impacted on their estate. My grandfather remained, joining the Federated Malay States Volunteer Forces.
My grandmother Margaret, my father (Charles Alasdair), his sister (June) and my father's Aunt Sheila Munro left Narborough Estate and fled to Singapore. They eventually gained passage on a ship for Perth, Western Australia.
Wilfred Charles Ephraums was eventually captured by the Japanese, and was sent to Changi. With him was also John Watts, a younger rubber planter on the estate, who eventually married my father's sister June. The family possesses a water colour portrait of Wilfred Charles Ephraums done in Changi by Jack Bridger Chalker, with whom my father has corresponded. My grandfather hid this portrait for 3 1/2 years in Changi, stored in a flattened silver cigarette case sewn into the inside of his clothes.
I would be most interested to have the contact details for the Federated Malay Volunteer Forces unit by grandfather belonged to.

Kind regards, Elizabeth Lilley
I've found the newspaper archive at newspapers.nl.sg very useful in tracking information about Malaya. Try searching his name with the dates you have.

I have found a few directories at various spots on the internet, I believe one spot was the Singapore Library. They were free but they take a while to download even on broadband. And the name changes with each publication.

I have 1870, 1877, 1879 and 1881, I have been looking for any years between 1892 - 1926. If you run across those please let me know, I am searching for my great grandfather, William Hamilton, schoolmaster at Penang Free School.
________________________________________
Sorry, I only found one reference:

Straits Calendar and Directory (including Sarawak and Labuan) for the Year 1870 –– Nothing
____
The Singapore Directory for the Straits Settlements 1877 –– Nothing
____
The Singapore Directory for the Straits Settlements 1879
Pg 29
Lingard, master & owner, British barque, West Indian
Lingard, J., mate, bargue, do
____
The Singapore and Straits Directory for 1881 containing also Directories for Sarawak, Labuan, Siam, Johore, and the Protected Native States of the Malay Peninsula -– Nothing

Let me know if they are able to search for you. I had been considering that as well.

Jill

Hello,

I am researching my ancestors who were living and working in Sarawak, Singapore and Penang at various times between 1850's and 1942. My g-g uncle was Joshua Lingard, a trader born in the UK, who died in Penang in 1915 and reportedly married a Thai woman. If you have come across this surname in your research, please let me know.

Also, I am aware that census' were conducted in Singapore and maybe for the whole Straits Settlements from the 1870's. Do you know how to access these records?

Thanks

No, unfortunately they are not online. I have the 1935 & 1940 ones. Singapore National Library's Reference Library have a wider collection of them and they would probably do 'look ups' for you.
