Hi Diane

Thanks for the images. I remember the Northam Rd cemetery well as I lived in Penang for 2 years in the late 1970's but had not developed my passion for James Scott at that time:)

The connection to Sir Walter and James - James is Sir Walter's first cousin once removed. The Robert Scott mentioned on the bottom of James' grave is his cousin and not his son.

There was a lot of intermarriage among the families in early Penang as you have discovered. One other problem is that the records are not always clear about which Robert Scott the record refers to: there are 3 that I know of that were in Penang in the early days of the settlement.

I think your George is the son of James Scott and Layla. Roger Scott Lewis who is also tracing the Scott family (and like me is not a relative)also provided the following information: A margin note in the Cathedral Parish Register from James Scott says that in 1800, George Scott should be registered as the child of James Scott and Layla, a native of Ladjana, Borneo and that she is a free woman. (Source: Parish Register, Cathedral of the Assumption, Georgetown, Penang.
