Hi. I'm researching my wife's ancestry. Her great-grandmother arrived in Seattle in 1912 from Kobe. On the manifest, it records that she is from Yamaguchi-ken, Kume Mura. I have some questions about that:
1) I understand that Yamaguchi is a western prefecture on Honshu, but that Kume Mura is located in Ehime prefecture on Okinawa. How is this possible? Was Kume Mura part of Yamaguchi in years past?
2) This ancestor's daughter arrived a little later. On her ship's manifest, it includes her uncle's name and address in Japan. The record says that she came from Yamaguchi-ken, Turaneo(? hard to read)-gun, Kume Mura. The suffix "-gun" means "rural area", doesn't it? Plus, I cannot really make out this name, can anyone suggest what it actually might say?
