Hello my name is Melvin Lewis
I was reading your that your mom was married/divorced to a Wiburn Hawkins in the military. My great aunt, Elnora Lewis-Hawkins (my grand father's sister) and Murt Hawkins had two sons, Wilburn Hawkins (born abt 1935) and Johns A. Hawkins (abt 1938), both born in Milam County Texas and later moved to Lamesa, Dawson County, Texas. Elnora Lewis Hawkins died in 1980 and her husband, Murt Hawkins died in 1973, both in Lamesa, Texas. Elnora had daughter, FLoydie Davis Townsend, from a previous marriage. She also died in 1980.

I was wondering if by chance if Wilburn Hawkins was the son of Elnora Lewis Hawkins and Murt Hawkins?

Thanks

I finally got my father's birth certificate (Sokichi Ono, aka Charles Stewart) translated through a man who replied to my original post. He was able to contact my father's cousin whose family were mentioned in the tohon. Email addresses and family photos were exchanged, which confirmed the connection. My husband and I went to Japan to meet the family and we were able to visit the grave in the foreigners' cemetery.

We also found the Akamon temple in Yokohama where the rest of the Ono family are buried and the priest allowed us to visit the grave.

I have not had sight of a census, but James and Take went to live in Kobe after the great Kanto earthquake of 1923 in which their house in Yokohama was lost. My cousin Takahiro Ono still lives in Kobe.

Thank you for your interest - I had a successful outcome and I hope the same will be for you.

Sato family- need help finding information

How do you find out information from Japan on a family?

I know that my husband's grandfather is Arthur Sato.

His father's name is something like Masao or Masozo Sato born about 1865 and lived in NY. We were told by many family members that Masao(?) was from a royal or noble family but that's all they knew.
He came over here in the 1890's but have not found the record yet. He did own a large piece of land in NY when he settled here, but lost it somehow to the state.
A friend that is from China said that the first name can actually give you the town of origin and then the house, but I would like to find out everything I can: his ancestors, his correct spelling, if there is a crest, any siblings, etc. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

1910 census http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1910USCenIndex...

1920 Census http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1920usfedcen&a......
Hello. Does anyone know how to look up records of Japanese military men who were in China in the early 1940's? My Japanese grandfather met and married my Chinese grandmother while he was in China in the early 1940's (before 1943). Somehow they got separated during the war and never found each other again. Where can I look up the record of Japanese men who went to China during World War 2? I would like to find my grandfather or at least find out where in Japan was he originally from. Thank you.

The British Consulate may have recorded their marriage. I have been able to find information on the findmypast.com web site. My grandfather (Alfred Talbot) was born in Yokohama in 1884 (of 2 British citizens) and through these indexes I was able to follow up and order a copy of his birth certificate, as well as his 2 sisters.

The web site I mentioned is not free, however, you can buy search units which are not very expensive. Please let me know if I can offer any more help.

Looking for my family

Need to find out a way to see if he still lives in the same place as he did 17 years ago. He is my great uncle, he may be deceased now I am unsure. His sister was Kazue Yamaguchi born in Tokyo. All his letters I found are addressed from Sakaeku Yokohama, and another on has all the same information except it say Tozukaku, Yokohama Kanagawa Japan. If there is anyone that could help me out that would be great. I have a cousin named keiko Ikeda the address is Mcchidashi Tokyo. I have a few notes that are all written in Japanese, the last one is about 2 years after my grandmother's passing, curious what they would have wrote to him about. If any one can offer any assistance please email me and I will take photo of the letter. Thanks so much Jeanna tiffanybrooksco@aol.com

Trying to Find My Mother

My birth name is Suzane Mari Bruch and my brother's name is Paul Gregg Bruch. Our father, who was in the United States Navy, John Bruch married Yuko Arihara in approximately 1973 for only four years before divorcing and moving to Taiwan/China and remarrying. Our father cut off all contact with our mother and we have never seen or spoken to her since. We were later taken away from our father for because of child abuse and both of us were adopted by the same family. Our last names were changed legally to Estilow. I am 33 years old and my mother would be approximately 54 years old. I do not know if she ever remarried or had more children. If anyone has any information regarding her location, it would be greatly appreciated. My brother and I have been searching for her almost all of our lives. Thank you.

Heather,

I don't know that I can offer you much help, but I might suggest you spell the name of the area differently, and see if this helps:

Oyamada-sakuradai, Machida-shi, Tokyo

This is still an existing area in Machida, a suburb of Tokyo. Of course you didn't list any house/street numbers, and the above only identifies the area or neighborhood in Machida.

Try writing or calling the Machida City office, and possibly they can give you some information on the family and tell you if they still live in the area or have moved. In Japan, residents register with the city offices and ward offices. Perhaps they can give you some information for the local temple where the family may be registered as well.

Here is a web site in English for Machida City, and if you or a friend can read Japanese, their main site may offer more information:

http://www.city.machida.tokyo.jp/english/index.html

Good luck on your search!

Pam,

I might suggest you check the links on JapanGenWeb if you haven't already, you might find something to help:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~jpnwgw/Eindex.html

However, it appears there has been no active Coordinator/Administrator for those sites in a long time, and unfortunately those pages haven't been updated.

I might also suggest that you visit a local LDS Family History Center in your area and see what records they have available or on loan from their Japan facilities. There are at least two FHC's in Japan. Here is a list of some of their holdings in the online catalog (www.familysearch.org) while running a general search for Japan:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermain...

Here is the result when running a specific search for Yokohama, and you can search other specific areas also:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/supermain...

It looks as if they also have the burial records for the Yokohama Foreigners' Cemetery, which may be the contents of a book that was published and is available commercially, too.

Hi Janet, Yes, I have been communicating weith the Craigs for quite a number of years - they've been great sources of information! The info I'm missing is more regarding Alan Owston's wife (or mistress?), so I was hoping to locate the birth record of my GGrandmother Susie to see if there was any info on her mother. I would also love to locate a marriage or death record for her mother. The only name I have is Indo Inouye, which conflists with the info the Craiggs have. BY the way, how are we related? Are you a relative of the the Craig's?

Regards,
Pam

Although I cannot answer your question about records directly, I do have Alan Owston's lineage from North Yorkshire in England and back several generations. Also info (dates, names etc) on his first wife and Susie as well as his second wife and family who went to Canada (BC) after Alan's death. I am away for four weeks from tomorrow but will send you info on return. In the intervening period, it would be good if you could tell me how you fit into the picture.

Can anyone point me to any resources for conducting genelogical research in Yokohama from about 1870-1915? I'm looking for information on whether there are birth, marriage, death or burial records available or any census or directories for this time period, and if so, where to/how to access them. Of course, I only speak English, but do have friends in Japan that could do some simple legwork or translation if needed. My GG grandfather was a British citizen who was a merchant and naturalist and is buried in the Foreigner's Cemetery. Also, any clues on locating microfilm of the English newspapers around this time?

Best Regards,
Pam in Florida

Birth/death records available c1880 Yokohama? (OWSTON)

I don't seem to be able to find any info on whether birth or death records are available, and if so, how or where to search for them. In my case, the birth record would be for the daughter of an Englishman and a Japanese woman living in Yokohama in 1879. Here's the details: my GG grandfather (Alan Owston) was an English merchant living in Yokohama in the 1870s. He and an unknown Japanese woman had a daughter, Susie, Dec 20, 1879. It is unclear whether Alan was married to Susie's mother, but rumor has it that she was the housemaid and that she died just a few years after Susie's birth. Alan died in Negishi in 1915 and is buried in the Foreigner's Cemetery. Any ideas where to begin appreciated (I have bilingual friends in Tokyo that could do legwork if needed.) Thx, Pam in Florida

Find out the following information.
Everybodys date of birth, place of birth, where the family graves are, they may in the premises of the temples. you might be able to find some information.
Names of schools they attended.
Names of temples or shrines in the above places can be great clues to the search. If you find the names hard to catch ask her to write it in Japanese or to draw pictures of them.
yokohama for examples is divided into sections called ward and the registery records are kept at these offices. You will most probably have to search through your mother-in laws fathers registery. If the father was originally from Yokohama then search this city. If he was from another city you may have to search there. Best wishes for your search.
