Re: Surname Kinsville

I am the daughter of Melville Kinsville; Sybil was his sister. She married Roy Emery in Calcutta, India, and died giving birth to James (Jim). Roy Emery brought James to England when he was about sixteen (along with his second wife, Ruth, and three children from her previous marraiage). Jim joined the Army. My family lost touch after that. I probably have a couple of old photographs if you are interested. Kinsville is an English name, although very rate. There are references to Kinsvilles in the British Library Records Department. Hope this is some help.
Annabelle Disson
If you reply use my husband's email, derekdisson@tiscali.co.uk

touch and m

Hi. I have a book which belonged to my late grandmother entitled Indian Domestic Economy, 7th edition published Calcutta 1871 which is fascinating. Unfortunately the first few pages which give details of how to treat and what to pay servants are damaged but there are many recipes so if there was anything you were particularly interested in let me know and I shall look it up. The book had previously belonged to a Mrs Garwood, possibly she wore out the pages on servants!

McLeod Ganj/Dharamshala History

Hello,

My name is Sophie Jay and I’m trying to research the history of McLeod Ganj, sometimes called Upper Dharamshala, in Himachal Pradesh.

McLeod Ganj is world famous today as the seat of the Dalai Lama and Tibetan government in exile, and is rapidly developing into one of India’s top tourism hot-spots.

However, whilst quite a bit is known about the town as a Tibetan settlement, very little seems to be known about its life as a British hill station from the mid 19th century onwards. I know that the area was struck by a catastrophic earthquake in 1905, which killed 20,000 people, and that most of the existing buildings were destroyed. A small number of buildings dating back to the 1920s and 30s are still standing, most of which are located within the nearby army cantonment.

What I’m looking for is any information about and photographs of people who lived in McLeod Ganj during any period of its history. Do you have an ancestor who lived there? Did they keep a diary or were any anecdotes handed down? How did people feel about the place? What did they do there?

Any shred of information, no matter how small, would no doubt prove a vital piece in the jigsaw of McLeod Ganj’s largely forgotten past.

I can be contacted on: 07778121382, or at: sophiejayuk@hotmail.com.

Many thanks.
British Raj/ Anglo-Indian food

Hello,

I'm interested in making contact with others who have a family connection with the British Raj and have inherited family recipes from that period.

My grandfather was born in Ahmedabad, and through him we have inherited numerous recipes that we enjoy to this day.

We are all familiar with Indian dishes that have been anglicised in the UK in modern times(Chicken Tikka Massala etc.), however, I am fascinated by the recipes that emerged during that earlier phase of anglo-Indian contact on the sub-continent.

The fusion of Indian and British tastes led to the creation of a unique style of cooking that does not seem to be formerly documented anywhere. However, I am sure it is still enjoyed by families across the world and passed down from generation to generation.

My ultimate aim is to document these recipes (with appropriate attribution) before they are lost. I would be very interested to hear from anyone who has recipes to share and would like to participate.

Thanks very much (and apologies if this is unacceptably O/T!)

Read the FIBIS Fibiwiki “Beginners Guide”
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Beginners%27_Guide

Although there is some information available online for births after 1910 it is limited, so you may need to look at microfilms available from the LDS at one of its Family Search centres, if you are unable to look at the original records at the British Library. You will need to look at the Beginners Guide and follow the various links to read how to do this.

Cheers
Maureen

Vanderwall Family in 19th century Bangalore and Madras

My ancestor was Arthur Daniel Vanderwall (married Mary Ann Aden) and likely the child of Henry Charles Vandewall and Marion Mendes of Madras. Arthur's siblings were likely Georgiana Sophia and Andrew Davis. Arthur's daughter Ethel Maud (born 1886 Bangalore) was my great-grandmother. His other daughter was Matilda Beatrice who married Alexander Allen. Looking for any information about the Vanderwalls including other relations and their origins in either Madras or potentially Sri Lanka (though their links to the Dutch Burghers of the same name is not easily determined).

RAYNEY, 1800s

I'm hoping for a connection with the siblings and antecedents of Jane Adelaide RAYNEY, born in Coimbatore, India, in 1880. She died in Calcutta, India in 1921.

Jane's father was Patrick (or Thomas) RAYNEY, of the Royal Garrison Army (RGA). Possibly 9th Company, Heavy Battery, Western Division as she married her first husband (Samuel George HORTON) at the Trimulgherry (Madras) station in 1899, and the certificate is from its register. Her first husband was with the 72nd Company RGA Heavy Battery, and died at the Nowgong station in 1903.

I've found possible RAYNEY uncles and aunts via Family Search, but not her birth record, her mother's name, nor any siblings. If I'm correct, her father was born in the Madras Presidency in 1860 (or 1861 if Patrick William), and died before 1904, or at latest by 1911. I have tried the London Gazette, 1911 British census (in which Jane appears) and FIBIS. Unless a divorce may have occurred and Patrick married again in 1901... however, I understood that Jane's mother lived with her in the first decade of the 1900s.

Surname spelled 6 known ways on Family Search including RAINEY, RAINY, REYNEY, REINY.

Any help welcome. Thanks.

Herbert was in the Army and have been told that he was in the Army in India somewhere between 1920 and 1930, a long shot I know. They had various children born in England but Herbert Jnr was born in India. Is anyone able to help in finding his birth please?
Majella, the FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page Madras Army, which has a section on records
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Madras_Army

I suggest you look at the “Registers of Madras Army European Soldiers IOR/L/MIL/11/101-108” which are also available on LDS microfilm.

If you want to know where Thomas CRONAN was posted, you could also look at the muster records, also available on LDS microfilm.

As he left the Madras Army in 1858 there may be a record for him in the “Discharge Papers of Madras Army European Soldiers IOR/L/MIL/11/277-282”. AS far as I am aware, these latter records have not been filmed by the LDS, so you would need a researcher to look at them at the British Library.

There is also a FIBIS Fibiwiki page Madras Horse Artillery
http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Madras_Horse_Artillery

Cheers
Maureen
Hi David,

That will be great if you could find anything on them, thanks. The family is George Collis (born 1890 in Cadnam, Hampshire, England), Catherine Collis nee Murphy (born 1892 in Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland), George Collis (born 1914 in Ballincollig, Cork, Ireland), Margaret Collis (born 1919 in Newbridge, Kildare, Ireland) and Elizabeth Collis (born 1920 in Newbridge, Kildare, Ireland).

I hope that you will have some luck in finding anything on them.

Cheers,

Martin

Did you ever get replies to your question? One of his children is described on the following site -
www.launcestonfamilyalbum.org.au/detail/.../francis-stuart-p...

C Troop Madras Horse Brigade/Artillery

Greetings from Australia. Does anyone have access to 1) a history of the above, and/or 2) records for the above?

A 2002 post shows that there are records held by the community (http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/INDIA/2002-09/...)

I know from research (on the web and via print books) that C Troop formed in 1805 as the Rocket Troop Madras Horse Artillery. Also, that it saw time in China during the Opium Wars, and the second Burma War.

Gaps in my ancestor’s 10 child timeline (as built from Family Search data) suggest that he saw time in both arenas; possibly also in the Sikh wars of 1845-49, and the second war in China (1856-59). It also appears he left the service after the Mutiny and the restructure of the armies in 1858.

My ancestor is Thomas CRONAN. I found a FIBIS record showing his marriage in 1839 at St Thomas Mount, Madras. He died in 1875 in Madras.

My goal is to learn more about C Troop, and to determine where in Ireland Thomas CRONAN came from.

If no-one can assist, I understand my best course of action is to access documents at the National Archives in Kew, and the British Library (India Office) in London.

All advice welcome. Thank you, Majella
