Hi
I was wondering if anyone was able to help me.
My 3 times great grandmother is down in the 1841 census as being born in Foreign Parts. Then in the 1851 census her birthplace is Bombay East Indias, we are thinking if she was British, it would still say British subject born in India. Would that be correct?
After a family member doing some research she found out that Kaur (which could be misheard) is the surname given to Sikh girls. And Har means God.
I wanted to know if anyone could confirm this and if that would mean she was full Indian or Anglo Indian? Because we are now starting to think her first name wasn't Maria and she just choose that name to fit in when she arrived in this country. Her husband was William Edwards and he was a Mariner, so we assume he was over there and they met and he brought her over here and they married. A number of family members from one of her children, and then grandchildren, have very dark hair and an darker complexion. And considering they lived in Margate that was unusual!
So we think to British people taking her name down on her marriage heard Har Kaur and wrote it as Harcour.
Is this possible?
We are completely fascinated with this and would love to know more. I know Indian records are not online. But if anyone has had something similar or even heard of the names above, I would be grateful for your input!
Thanks
Sarah
