In researching my paternal grandmother's family, many of whom worked, were born in, married, educated and died in India, I came across the website of the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, the oldest boarding school in Asia.
I happened to find the names of my great-grandfather, Reginald Bramley, and his older brother Percy on a list of former students. Elsewhere on the website, I found a list of "Distinguished OCs" (Old Cottonians - the name for the Alumni association) and the following entry:
POLICE(DIG and Above)
Bramley DIG of UP (1879- )
I'm sure this is my great-grandfather. My questions are: what do "DIG" and "UP" stand for??
Any hints or help would be greatly appreciated!
