Dear Peggy and Leonard,

Thank you both for your posts. They have brought me great joy. I invited you to view my da Silva Tree. Just a forwarning that beyond Timotio Emmanuel Da Silva and Querina Filomena Farias on my tree I have no proff that the rest is correct, it's just guess work that I have been trying to validate.

Will you also invite me to look at your trees?

joedasilva@yahoo.com

I live in California and all of my family that were decendants of my Grandfather Guilherme Alberto Da Silva also live in California. So, one of us will be going to view the records from the club you mentioned.

I am not certian of the spelling of names as all came from memory, as our records were lost in the war from what we were told.

Thank you both again, I do look forward to talking with you.

Joe and Angie da Silva

Hi Peggy, of course we're related. I'm confused as to your message as we have been sharing information for years. Your grandmothers maden name was Ferras, her father, also my grandfather changed it from Ferraz. So my mother was Maria Alicia Ferras. Your grandmother Peggy was my Mother's bridesmaid.
I recently moved to Vancouver Canada. Hope to meet you in person one day. Leonard

Hi Joe, I can help you. My Mother's Mother was a da Silva. There was 5 da Silva families from Portugal that immigrated to Macau. Many married within each family so we're all related. My Mother's Father was Jacquine Ferras, he changed it from Ferraz. I have a family tree that goes up 13 generations to the 1700 and because they all had big families, I have hundreds of cousins. Most of which live in the San Francisco area. Ernesto da Silva is my cousin.
Send me your email, and I will send you my family tree so that you can track your ancestry. Where do you live? I live in Blaine, WA and Vancouver, Canada. My phone number is 778 710-3579 and my email address is lenrivero@msn.com. The Catholic Church in Macau burnt down and all records were lost, but there was a Portuguese who reconstructed all the information he could gather and published a three volumn book which is quite accurate now. There is a copy at the San Francisco Lusitana Club and you might wish to contact Maria Ruliz.
Are you sure about the correct spelling of your family ancestors?. I have a number of ancestral cousins from Shanghai, all with similar spelling of their names and we may be related. Add me to your family tree and I will look at your tree. My mother was born in Shanghai and grew up with the da Silva boys. Her grandmother (my gr-grandmother) was Laura Farris. I also have many photos of Filomena, the da Silvas and contacts for living family members, as well as photos of gravestones in Hong Kong.

Keep in mind that all Portuguese look similar to each other and that look is very unique but not Asian.

My email address is denalillama@gci.net to add to your ancestry.com family tree.

~Peggy Brockman, mother of Cameron Reitmeier

British and Chinese Great Grandfather

Our great grandfather Wong Teng Mo Was born in Macau to a british mother and chinese father. We estimated his birth somewhere around 1880 - 1890. He had one brother, which we know not to much about Wong Teng Feng. His wife Salome Madrazo is of portuguese and spanish descent. He came to Zamboanga, philippines around 1908 - 1910. He then changed his name to Santiago Wong Rodriguez. A lot of the paper work we had was burned in the 40's during the war and there is only one remaining relative that is alive that knows information.

So I just want to know:
1) What would be the best way to find any info on his mother and father?
2) Would any offices in the philippines carry information on his parents?
3) From what part of portugal did most people that inhabited Macau come from? Lisbon?
4) Is there any specific region of England that immigrated to Macau?

Thanks in advance!

My grandfather was a Lieutenant in the Shanghai Municipal Police in Shanghai. There are many pictures in the US National Archives (online) of the photos and files of the SMP. Also, try the website http://www.macanesefamilies.com/Joomla/index.php for your ancestry info. Finally, many of the vital records were destroyed in Shanghai by the Communists, however if you find the name of the churches in any records, you might contact the churches who still many of the records that were sent to neighboring countries.

Happy hunting.

I have a 1968 affidavit of my birth in Macau.
My birth document is an Assentos De Nascimento (Entry of Birth). This affidavit was notarized 1 year after my birth.
According to this document, my mother says I was born in her apartment (therefore, no hospital birth certificate).
I have reason to believe I was adopted because my father wanted a son.

This document is a sworn affidavit and there were 2 witnesses: a husband and wife (I believe)
Tai Hoi (husband)
Chan Man Lok (wife)

Both were resident in Becos das Janelas, 8, 1st floor - Macau.

I know this is a long shot but if anyone knows any information about these 2 names, please notify me. Its only speculation, but I think these 2 people may be my birth parents.

I have attached a picture of their signatures (in Chinese) from the affidavit.

I was born in Macau in 1955, my parents were married in either Shanghai or Macau, I have three sisters and a brother that were also born in Macau that are older than I am. I have been trying to complete some of the family history on my mother's side, and trying to work on finding additional information from my father's side.

My father was Portugese and worked with the police/military police for Portugal. I know my father was born on the island of Pico, Azores, and raised on Faial, Azores, Portugal. After being put in a foster home in Lisboa, he then went to Shanghai/Macau, where he met my mother.

If there is anyone that knows where I may get marriage certificates for Shanghai and Macau, that would be very helpful.

My mother along with 5 of her kindergarten friends from Shanghai, all of whom are aging, have been meeting for Dim Sum each month in San Francisco for decades. I'm sure she and her friends would be interested in the work you are doing on behalf of the Macau Portuguese. Her father was a business trader out of Macau.

You can reach me at 907-644-4485. Be aware that I am responding through my son's Ancestry account. My name is Peggy Brockman.
Jael Botelho

I understand that my great-aunt (by marriage) Jael Botelho was from Macau. She married my grandmother's brother Stanley Pearce. I'm interested in knowing Jael's family roots, I understand that her father was called William and that they both came to England in the early twentieth century. Thanks

Helena,

My family too came from Macau and we share the same name.... Do you know of anyone in your family named Hermangildo Ramos Fernandes? My grandfather Manuel Jose Fernandes left Macau and went to Portugal then moved to the US with his wife.... He always talked about his cousins that moved to Sao Paulo and Copa. I know this is a stretch (being that Fernandes is a large Family name), but it is worth a try. Thanks- Ryan Milligan

Seeking Portuguese decendants in Shanghai

Since early 1800, the British businesses in Shanghai employed many Portuguese from Macau to work in their Import/Export offices and banking institutions. The Portuguese were excellent clerical workers and many spoke English and Chinese which made them valuable in translating and supervising the Chinese workers. Most were paid a salary less than English citizens but more than local Chinese. Their middle class status gave them a very comfortable life style and many married into the Chinese population producing many children. After the Communist Liberation in 1949, most foreigners including the Portuguese left Shanghai leaving their children behind with their Chinese mothers. After half a century most of the Portuguese decendants lost contact with their parents and they blended into the Chinese community. Sometimes they were treated with prejudice by the Chinese population because of their mixed heritage so they tended to hide their Portuguese blood line. After 2000 Macau was returned to China, the old Portuguese Government held millions of dollars that had been earned through mostly Casino taxation. One of the things they did for the Macanese Communities that had spread all over the world was granted them with 12,000,000RMB for each social club. San Francisco with three clubs got equal shares, Vancouver has two clubs, There is one club in Toronto, Portugal, Australia and Brazil. Some clubs have as little as 200 members. Shanghai has an estimated 4000 Macanese and should be entitled to a grant. Any one in Shanghai who has a Portuguese heritage or knows of anyone who does is encouraged to contact me at my email address: lenrivero@msn.com. If there is a sufficient response, I intend to hold a banquet for our Macanese friends and form a Social Club in Shanghai.
My family comes from Macau. They were there for 400 years. Initially they arrived from Portugal but intermarried so there is a considerable amount of mixtures. You are considered Macanese if your parents or grandparents are from there or even if you just wish to be one.

I am what they call "filho Macau" a child of Macau.

Hope it answers your question.

Helena

Dear Telma,

What is my connection with Macau? Good question. It's just a long time interest and fascination. I have read almost everything I could find, in English, about Macau. Also looked at many pictures and scenes from movies e.g. Macao with Jane Russell & travel videos (usually with Hong Kong), studied maps of Macau, and have postage stamps from Macau. One of my interests is geography & have a master's degree from U of Minnesota, US Geography Department. Other interests include slide photography & gardening & Asia & the Pacific rim & comparative religions of the world.

Back in high school I studied Spanish. Then while I was supposed to be learning Spanish, I went to the public library and checked out a Portuguese/English book to see how close are Portuguese & Spanish. I recently purchased a Port/Eng dictionary. Am also interested in Chinese language. Unfortunately my Portuguese language skill is 0 & Chinese skill even less. I'd love to hear about you,

Obrigada, Tony

Dear Tony,

Bothe definitions are acceptable. The people who deny the mixed blood want to think they are only of Portuguese extraction. This is highly unlikely as the Portuguese soldiers, traders, had to marry someone to start the colony and the historians detail marriages with Chinese, Malaccan, Japanese Christians etc. What is your connection with the Macanese? telma.

Dear Telma,
Thanks very much for the message! Are you Macanese? Have you ever been to Macau? Do you live in Macau? If so, you are the first I've met.
How many languages do you speak? I only speak English, but am trying to learn a little Portuguese, Mandarin & Cantonese and hope to visit Macau someday. One of the books I have is "Macau Miscellany" by Shann Davies.
I have some relatives that are part-Dutch and my cousin married a Chinese woman from Taiwan. I know at least one cannonball from Monte Fort hit a Dutch ship in 1627.
I would love to hear anything you can tell me about Macau/Macao. I first learned of Macau from stamp collecting when I was about age seven.
Was trying to figure out if your surname is Grant or da Rosa or both. I live in Roseville, Minnesota, USA - 4th generation American. Rozycki means "rose family" in Polish. My father is 1/2 Polish & 1/2 Irish (O'Dea) & my mother is Norwegian (Skoe). I have an uncle living in the Philippines with a Filipina & her two kids, a cousin MD in Guam, & another cousin married to a Korean.
When I was a "bebe" I lived in Hawaii for a year and took a vacation there in 2000. I've a slide of a Portuguese costume from Bishop Museum, Honolulu & some from Honolulu
"Chinatown". Also read biography of Sun Yat Sen who lived in Macau & Hawaii. Sorry for rambling. I'd love to hear from you again.

Obrigado!

Tony

Dear Tony,

I am unaware of such mixes . Many Macanese hotly deny that they are of mixed blood at all. I am interrested in the Chinese and Dutch influx as I am sure my family has both. Any leads you have would be appreciated. Telma.
