Hi there, I am looking for any info on the Gahar/ Gardner family who lived in the Caine Road area of Hong Kong from around 1840.

Info on the origin of the name GAHAR would be very helpful.

Particularly any info on WILHELM GAHAR (or GARDNER). His surname at birth was likely to have been GAHAR, he was born around 1840, possibly in Germany or of German-born parents. It is likely he died in Hong Kong. He was married to:

Cecília Libânia JESUS
Birth 1840
Death 16/08/1878 in Hong Kong, BCC

Again, we have no more info on her family, she may have been from East Timor.
Any ideas most welcome. Thanks very much!

I'm still not a lot further on but I have written to loads of places so I'm hoping for a breakthrough somewhere.

Thank you again for taking the trouble to write it is much appreciated.

Kind regards

Caroline

Hello Caroline,

I've nothing specific to give you, but a suggestion that you try a free website, gwulo.com - a site for people interested in HK history in all its dimensions. Its a well run site, you'll have to sign up to post a request in the forum section, but there's quite a lot of people who frequently visit there. Use as many specific names as you can in the 'strap line' - to get the best results.

Hope something turns up
Patricia

Searching for a friends blood family in Hong Kong

Hello
I have just joined this website in the hope of being able to trace my friends family in Hong Kong. She was born Mary Victoria Chan, 7th May 1949 at 2nd floor, 139 Wing Lok Street, Hong Kong. I have her birth certificate, registration number 68 B&DPR which lists her parents, father, Chan, Tin Cho and mother Yeung, Wai Chan. She was placed in the Ling Yeut Sin Infants Sanitarium where the Sister in Charge was Mother Giacomina Belottin.

Apart from us knowing that she was adopted by a Monika and Glenn Mccrossan, who changed her name to Mary Victoria Mccrossan and was brought to England around 1953 this is all the information I have to go on so I would be extremely grateful if you could help point me in the right direction of where to start trying to trace her blood family. Her adopted family said she was the 13th born and 8th daughter so we are hoping that she will have some living blood relatives. Any help or tips would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks

Caroline
UK

I think that you will find the information that you are looking for by registering at this website www.macanesefamilies.com/ Good luck with your search.

How to find my grandmother Fatima Din, first wife of Rahmat Din HONG KONG

Fatima Din (Chinese) was married to Rahmat Din (Pakistanee) and lived in Hong Kong in the early/mid 1900s. They had 4 children in Hong Kong, including my mother Sakina Din (b. 1944). Second wife came along (and had 5 children to Rahmat) and made family life so miserable that Fatima was forced to flee when Sakina (her last born) was just a few months old. Childhood was wrought with emotional abuse for all Fatima's 4 children in the Din household, thanks to the stepmother (wife no.2). Such were the days when men could have multiple wives and Chinese stepmothers were cruel to their step children (this was unfornately very common in Chinese families). Rahmet died in the 1960s. My mother (Sakina) has since tried to find Fatima when she was an adult in Hong Kong in the 1960s but records were very scarse in Fatima's time. Fatima had no official birth date or certificate. Sakina and her family (me!) have lived in Australia since 1977. Does anyone have any ideas as to how we can find Fatima Din (if she is still alive?) or any other children she may have had post 1945? She could have changed her name because she was in hiding from her husband Rahmat. Thanks.

As well as correcting it to 'findmypast' I also have to update my last post to say I have just had a bit of success - I found Rose Power at a boarding school in the UK in the 1881 census records. And through the Trove website at the National Library of Australia (www.nla.gov.au) which includes digitised newspaper articles, I have found Maria Power arriving in Rockhampton from London in 1889.

Hi Eileen,
Yes I've found those. But there are still a couple of 'mystery' periods. Firstly, I don't have anything on Alexander (senior) between the 1851 census record when he was a child living with his parents and 1867 when he died in Shanghai. So I don't know when he went to the orient or when or where he married Maria (or indeed her date of birth and parents' names).
The second mystery period is between 1871 when Maria and the children were back in London and 1888 when Rose got married in Longreach, QLD. The family folklore is that Rose and her brother arrived in QLD in their late teens from Shanghai, so I'm really keen to find out if this is true. Certainly they don't appear to have stayed in England, but maybe they went to Ireland (Maria was born in Limmerick) or maybe she had other family in HongKong/Shanghai and they returned to the support and protection of those family members. It would help if I was certain of her surname! The marriage record really is the crucial document that I'm missing.
I've ordered a couple of documents from CO129 at the UK PRO that mention A.B. Power (based on the Prof's index). With any luck they'll fill a gap. I've also signed up to findmyfamily, but no luck there so far.

I'm in AUstralia so the more I can do on line the better. You've given me some great leads.

Thanks again.

For Americans, birth/death/marriage of individuals often shows up in quarterly reports, or purpose-written despatches. For each consular post (Shanghai, HK), the first reel for the post has a register of the correspondence on all reels for that post, and the dates go up to 1906, when the State Department changed file management. It was a two-step change, finalized in 1910, and after 1910, there are 'decimal files,' many in microfilm as "Internal Files for Japan [France, China, etc.]," and a meta-guide to the cypher code of decimal number==subject matter and sub-divisions.........It got kind of tricky for US State Dept consuls to be certifying and performing marriages, though. The US Court for China, up and running after 1907, did some of those functions...........................................

But, for the UK, well when the sun never sets on your empire, you end up having lots of records. The UK-PRO hands this off to FINDMYPAST, a $$ database..........

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-perso...

....................................................

The Findmypast search is free, but if you actually want to see the info-document, you gotta sign-up.................

HERE's the search results findmypast...................
Marriages from 1796 to 2005............................
Last name: Cockburn (including variants)...............
Region: Asia - China...................................
Results: 4 records found...............................
Cost: You will be charged 5 credits for a transcription and an original index image unless you have purchased a subscription for this set of records....................

Last First Country of registration Place Reg YR
COCKBURN William R China Shanghai 1921-1925 VIEW....

COCKBURN George W China Shanghai 1926-1930 VIEW....

COCKBURN Evelyn S China Shanghai 1931-1935 VIEW....

COCKBURN Nellie Unknown Anagni 1945 VIEW.............

I'm likely to order a couple of extracts from the PRO on the strength of it.

The next challenge will be hunting down a couple of birth registrations and a possible marriage registration from the 1860s in Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Hi, I'm glad the info was helpful.

CO 129 comprises draft responses to the HK Governor's despatches to the Secretary of the State for the Colonies. The Gov's missive would arrive, and then there would be a sort of round-robin, with in-house staff crafting a draft reply, each commenting on what the person before them suggested. If all went well, the Secretary for the Colonies would merely scribble an OK and his initials.

CO129 is on microfilm, even when you personally visit the PRO. Some large US universities have the collection. Hong Kong University, and the HK-PRO have copies.

The UK-PRO has an online document ordering system, quite efficient, pay by credit card, get either digital-pdf, or hard copy snail mail. The link to CO129 material on their site is below.

BUT be sure to get the full citation from Dr. Sinn's index, including the page numbers. The CO document pages are numbered only every other page, meaning that each page is actually two pages, so 445-50, will be more like 9-10 pages.

If you order microfilm inter-library loan, the page numbers will be needed in order to pinpoint which particular microfilm reels to order.

Ordering: when you are checking the PRO online catalogue and find a particular document, up will come an option to order online. However, I think with Dr. Sinn's citations, you can skip the catalogue search, and copy-and-paste the information into the order form.

Example:
CO 129/121, pp 286-313
1867-04-23
AMERICAN SHIP "PARSEE"
From: MACDONNELL.R
Send to: DUKE OF BIRMINGHAM & CHANDOS
Encl: ENCLOSURE=11 * CORRESPONDENCE WITH UNITED STATES CONSUL CONSEQUENT ON HIS REPORTING THAT "FELONIOUS AND PIRATICAL ACTS" BY THE CREW HAD BEEN COMMITTED ON BOARD. * OPINION ON THE CASE OF THE PRISONERS LANDED FROM THE PARSEE
Keyword(s): AMERICAN, SHIP, PARSEE

HERE'S the PRO link:

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/default.htm

On the main page, look toward the lower right hand side for The Catalogue, then once there you can enter CO 129 in the search space.

Re: Hong Kong online sources

Hi Susan,

I'd say the HK English-language newspapers, digitalized and online at the HK Public Library Multimedia
http://hkclweb.hkpl.gov.hk/hkclr2/internet/eng/html/frm-adv_...

Unfortunately, the search engine for these newspapers only picks up headlines, or headers. This would mean going day by day looking for the Passenger arrival info, usually in the top left hand corner of page one: ships arrived, cleared, departed; passengers arrived, departed.

Gaps in the database collection begin Dec 1941.

I wonder if folks going from Japan to HK 1940-42 would be evacuees. You could check using Google 'news,' doing an initial search and then selecting 'archives' in the left hand side menu, then narrowing down the dates. News stories would include vessel names, and perhaps even passenger names.

Another place that could be worth checking out: the relevant consulate in Japan. Americans leaving Japan, whether being evacuated or not, would likely be in touch with a US consulate, and vice-versa. Ditto Australians.

Eileen

Thanks for all this good information. Do you know where I would find passenger lists for ships that left Japan and arrived in HK in 1940 - 1942. I am looking for a Stanley Foley

Many thanks

Sue
