Re: GONG from Canton China b c 1885

I have done some research on the fascinating ALLOO family, and also highly recommend Steven Young's site.

However, there is an error in the date when the family came to NZ: their last daughter born in Smythesdale, Victoria was Helena (Maude) Alloo, born 1867, so the family could not have travelled here in 1865, but probably 1868.

I spotted somewhere (and accidentally lost the link) which said that John came in the Omeo in 1865, and that Helena was 1 when the family came over. It is also apparent that he must have gone back to Victoria in time to help make Helena for her birth in Smythesdale, Victoria, in 1867.

A member of my family, Arthur James Philip Penman (mother born Cecilia Eliza Phillips), was briefly married (1922-before 1930) to John Alloo's granddaughter Lorna Mary Von Haast.

Her blood lines were fascinating: one grandfather was John Alloo, a very famous Chinese who became the first ethnic Chinese to become a sworn policeman in NZ - though only after intervention by the Prime Minister of the day; the other was the famous Prussian explorer/naturalist Sir (Johan Franz) Julius Von Haast KCMG, FRS, who left his name on much of our most fabulous scenery.

I imagine that it would have been very difficult to be of both Chinese and German descent in extremely xenophobic New Zealand of the early 1900s, with the 1914-1918 war compounding matters!

More data is available on request from robert(dot)phillips(at)xtra(dot)co(dot)nz.

Robert.

I had a look at the Chinese Maritime Customs site from Bristol University and see they now have lists by nationality. I think your Gunther is in the German list. The bulletin board for this site comes up with a different site.
Has anyone contacted the Nanking Archives where the records for the CIMCS are kept?
Regards Gerry
Hi Liz,
I have not been on Ancestry.com for many years. I do believe that I have met you. I knew Astor, and Bunny. As a matter of fact, I visited your Dad at the POSGH when he was ailing. I also have an uncle with the same name- Astor, better known as Pouy. He is a dentist - Dr. Astor Victor Awon.
I have been trying for some time to communicate with our relatives in China, but alas it has been fruitless. San Shui, where our relatives originated is no longer a small village, but a city that deals with lots of trade, and I have heard that the Labour Camp is there. You step out of line, and you are lost there forever. Because it is not a tourist attraction, you do not hear much about it in the brochures.
Apart from which, with the many wars that transpired in China, most of our relatives have probably been dispursed all over the world. Our only salvation is getting the DNA match up. It is amazing.
All the best.
AnnV.

Hi Janice
Thank you for contacting me – wow, what a lot of names! I am presuming that the families you are interested in are Charles & Osmund Cleverly. Charles having married Mary Pope (sister of John Pope) with a daughter marrying a James Mooney? I do have details of the grave of John Pope in Hong Kong plus copies of a number of wills plus access to a whole wealth of other information about these families. It would be better to contact me direct at twiglet.thomas@tiscali.co.uk If you are interested in details of my background these can be found at http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/dustyfiles
Christine

I have a database of over 1,100 Shanghai burials 1859 - 1899 and am adding to it all the time. Also included are many thousands of deaths of British subjects in China during the 19th. century. More importantly, during my 20 years in Hong Kong I transcribed and indexed all the legible inscriptions in the former HK Colonial Cemetery which dates back to 1844. I added to this with corresponding burial records and newspaper reports on deaths. I will do a search for free but if it produces a match then I do ask for a small payment to cover all my expenses.

My great-grandmother's maiden name was Ekaterina Mikhailovna Nikolaevna. She was born in Ostashkov, near Kiev, Ukraine. Her mother was Irina Semonovna. From what I can tell, both Nikolaev and Semonov are common Russian surnames.

My great-grandmother and her 2nd husband, Arseny Vlasoff lived in Tientsin (now Tianjin) from about 1921 to 1949. In 1949 they fled the communist advances and went to Shanghai to catch a ship to Tubabao, Philippines. They were Displaced Persons there until 1951 when the US allowed them and a couple thousand others from Russia to come in to the country.

It is unknown what happened to her first husband, my grandmother's father, Ivan Petrovich Plasovsky. My grandmother last saw him in 1928. It was presumed that he returend to the Soviet Union.

I would be happy to hear if there is other family still in Russia.

Hi All,
Just this minute I have been adding the name Zinzan to my family tree.
My connection come from alot longer ago than those mentioned here.

I believe the Zinzan's here are decendents of Allessandro Zinzan. He was born c1520. His grt grt grandson Peter(Alexander) Zinzan born c1638,Tilehurt, Berkshire, England.
Married a Judith Gunter. Judith is an ancestor of my mother.
I have the Gunter line all the way back to 1035. Though I could go back even further, to Charlemagne - King of the Franks.(2 April 742 – 28 January 814) thats just a little silly.

I have not yet made it to those here..but I am just a few gens short of making the connection. As I believe Robert Vaux Zinzan is one of those in the line to be added.

Anyway...just thought I'd throw in my tuppence.
Regards
Paul

Hello Tuzheng
Thank you for your email. Yes I am very interested in what you have. Rev. Nelson-Bitton was my great grandfather but I have limited contact with the family in England (so don't know a lot about the family) as my Grandmother and Grandfather (John Nelson-Bitton, son of Rev. Nelson-Bitton and his first wife Lucy [am finding it very hard to find information about Lucy as she died just after they returned to England - I suspect that it was because of her health that they went back]) ran away to Australia to marry as my grandmother's parents did not approve of the marriage. So any information is great to have.
Regards
Jan

I am in search of any living descendant's of Edward Ellwood brn: (1795) married to Abigail How brn: (1796). Their children were; Hannah brn: (1824), Joseph brn: (1828), James brn: (1830), Charlotte brn: (1834), Abraham brn: (1840) and John brn: (1838). John was the father of George Alexander Ellwood. My Great-great Grandfather was George Alexander Ellwood brn: 28 Dec 1862. He married Eliza Crow brn: 9 May 1859 from Canterbury, Kent, England. George and Eliza died in Rutland, Vermont, USA.
George's siblings were; John Edward (1860), Annie (1862), Emma Sarah (1866), Lucy Ellen (1870), and Joseph Noel (1873).
On 21 July 2009-31 July, I will be visiting the Hertfordshire area with my mother Beverly Jean Ellwood-Blanchard (1929), George's 80 year old granddaughter. We will be visiting ancestral churches and in hopes of meeting living relatives. Beverly's lifelong dream has been to travel to England in search of relatives and I am finally able to offer this to her.
If anyone has any information that would help locate any descendants of the above relatives please forward the information to me on Ancestry.com or by email at (spfx4film@aol.com).
Sincere thanks
Joel P.
It is true unfortunately that all things Western were removed/destroyed from 1949 & through the 1950's.
I have spent a lot of time in Shanghai looking for Western Graves and basically there are none left and trying to find any records is nye on impossible also.
From a lot of research I have been trying to rebuild some burial indexes but its slow work
I would be most interested to hear from anyone who is having more success than I have had to date
But if you have a Jewish ancestor you are looking for the news is somewhat better - there is a very active group in Shanghai who have done a wonderful job at finding & rescuing the old headstone & piecing together the Jewish History in Shanghai
Their website is
http://www.shanghaijewishmemorial.com.29.html
and Dvir Bar-Gal of this group does walking tour through old Jewish Shanghai which if you are going to Shanghai is well worth contacting
But sadly there is no other group saving British stones or information
Sorry if it is the wrong one.

Does anyone know if it is possible to find out about British Subjects in Shanghai in the 1870's? My great grandmother was born in Shanghai in 1873, called Minnie Nelson, her father was called Andrew Nelson and a sailor as far as I know. I do not know her mother's details but there is a possibility her surname was either Thomas or Rogers. I think they may have also lived in the Hankow area as well at some point. I would really like to trace who Minnie Nelson's mother was.

Many thanks

Vicki

Hello I am doing research for a friend who is of chinese and Mexican american descent. His grandfather Carlos Ham was born in Canton, China and emigrated to Mexico. He married a mexican woman named Martha Garcia. His parents Francisco Ham and Maria Long were both born in Canton, China and also emigrated to Mexico. If any one could point me in the right direction for research it would be much appreciated. That is all he knows about his grandparents and great grand parents.

Dear Friend:
It is so nice to get your message and it is my pleasure to give you some information about your great grandfather(Rev Nelson Bitton. I teach in Zhejiang university, China. Presently I am writing a PHD thesis on that. That's why i collect several of Rev Nelson Bitton's book. I think at that time he was working for London Missionary Society and did publish a lot of important works on the spread of christianity in China, especially missionary activities in China , like John Griffith. I have the following works:1)"Our heritage in China "; 2)Griffith John :the Apostle of central China; 3)Regeneration of new China(With an E-copy, i can send you that copy by email.
If you really have interest, can we contact with each other via personal email?
Hope to keep in touch!
with my best wishes!
Fuzheng
