PERTCH -- Michael, age 94, passed away peacefully on January 5th, at 4:00 p.m. in Nanaimo Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Blanche; their two children, Larry PERTCH (Noella) of Qualicum Beach and Sylvia Sydney PRESTON of White Rock; 2 grandchildren, Darren (Karleen) of Qualicum Beach and Theresa (Roger) of New Westminster; 3 great-grandchildren, and his only surviving sister, Jean SMITH of Sidney.
Michael was born in Harbin, Manchuria in 1905 from where his father was supervising the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway into Vladivostock. The family emigrated to Canada in 1909, first settling in Dana, Saskatchewan and finally moving to New Westminister when Michael was a young man. He worked at Fraser Mills until 1945 when he went to work on the paddle-wheels in Skagway that were supplying oil to the American armed service. After the war he worked briefly at Pacific Pine and then at Alaska Pine until it burned down in 1965. This gave him the opportunity to retire early and go commercial fishing with his son for five years. In 1991, Michael and Blanche moved to Qualicum Beach. There will be no service by request.
